What will it take to convince you of climate change?

These threads are very similar to the religious threads in that if you dont side with the group think youre an idiot and a fool.

You're an idiot and a fool if you don't ask questions and just accept whatever you hear.

Most of the people in these threads are layman, including you. I dont really see high level data analysis coming from you either. You are barely understanding the charts coors posts, yet you totally agree with data in which you dont understand.

Strange comprehension. Where did you give the impression that I'm one to offer high level data analysis? Also stange comprehension where you say I totally agree. Counter to your general interests, I know, but please show me something to back up your statements.

Without doing the research for ourselves or being experts in the field it can be hard to breakdown every study. Then it becomes a matter of "well scientists are experts and theyre smarter than you and most of them agree, so unless you create your own data disproving them you must stop dissenting." I and others do not operate that way.

You *do* operate that way everytime you drive/ride your car/bike. Unless you think you can read something on the interwebs and designs better suspension/engines/chassis/brakes/etc? Or, do you put a certain level in trust that the people who went to school for it know what they're doing? The way you argue the subject, it's basically pointless to discuss anything down to the point of whether or not we're even conscious. How do you *know*, but you *could* be lying, you're *not* a *true* scientist...there's just no end to how you weasel out of it.

There are experts who are in the field and even participating in the ipcc reports (like i linked) that are wary of the data and models and scientists chosen to gather the data. Its funny. If john christy himself came in here and said the same thing he said in that interview without anyone knowing who he was, he wouldve been torn apart here. People wouldve laughed, said he was basically a moron or just a political nutjob and told how he didnt discuss exact data points so he has no right to argue. The motherfucker was lead author on the 2001 ipcc report and has some of the exact concerns many here do that are made to look foolish. So is he an idiot too?

The only idiot is the one who doesn't ask questions, but of course he's not an idiot, but why don't you apply your same "he must be lying/corrupt/etc"? It's not like neither side hasn't us tons of reasons to distrust them, so really shouldn't all skeptics be 50/50'ish? Then mix in the things you see like smog that's visible from space, deforestation that's visible from space, human caused extinction of who knows how many species, 100,000 flights a day, a billion cars on the planet, totally measurable change of ocean alkalinity, 14 billion pounds of trash dumped into the ocean every year, 2.6 *trillion* pounds of garbage generated each year....and you're all HHHMMMMMM....I DUNNOOOO GAISSSS. But of course, I'm sure the numbers are all fake and created by smelly hippies who just want to hurt the man.

I am particularly wary of the climate models of which much of this research is based. Ive read about them and i know the trillions of factors they must take into account. But i dont know how to break down a mistake in the software and prove it wrong. I know that every couple years there is a drastic turn in the temperature estimates. It started as like 10°c in 100 years and over time dropped to like 2°c. Now it has started to climb again. Not one of these models saw almost static temperatures or a change of only .16°c in the last 15 or so years. That tells me these models are flawed. But these models are also why we are expected to act. I have an issue with that.

And you should be wary, from all sides, even the one you (and I) support.

There are many other factors i take issue with but in terms of picking apart every study and describing where the data breaks down is not easy in 5 minute blips on barf. It could take many hours and what would be the point? None of the people fully invested in this are changing their minds. Im supposed to have data analysis with people that think a warm day in february is evidence? There is a couple of people in the field here and i do respect their opinions but smart people can be wrong.

What's the point? The point is that's how to discuss it. Just because it's tough doesn't mean you don't do it. Arguing the high level nonsense is a billion time more pointless. Of course not the warm day in February, we've already established how pointless the micro stuff is. Of course smart people are wrong, but you can piggyback on their process and see if you come to the same conclusion. Not that it's absolute, but set it aside for future examining information in totality.

The wording of the original post and some subsequent posts leads me to believe the intention of the thread was to belittle people with a disenting opinion. That is a bummer because I agree humanity has a large affect on climate and this planet, but a confrontational approach like yours is alienating the people whose minds you seem to want to change. Some good info and posts came out of it however.

You're an idiot and a fool if you don't ask questions and just accept whatever you hear.

Which is what most people do with regards to climate change.

I didn't get that impression. Maybe you didn't say you totally agree, but it seemed like you were supporting agw without really understanding the data. I may have been incorrect on assuming that.

I don't understand this. I ride based on principles I learned riding dirt and being taught by people I know. Not sure what you're getting at

Of course there is shitty things humans do to the earth. I think this is why most people do not question climate change. they just assume humans fucked it up so it's real. Making a cleaner planet is a net positive anyway so why bother resisting it or questioning if its really happening.

And you should be wary, from all sides, even the one you (and I) support.

agreed.

This was never a discussion. It was meant to make skeptics look dumb.

I don't think so.

Here's what I wrote:

I'm not here to argue one way or the other...just wondering how much evidence you need to be convinced A) climate change is (has been) happening and B) it was caused by human activity.

I've talked to more than one climate change skeptic who told me that no amount of evidence would ever change their mind. How about you? And if that's the case, doesn't "skeptic" just mean "skeptical of every point of view except my own?"

So I don't know why you think I should have to change your mind. As if that's even possible.

You said you wouldn't argue one way or another, but you are.

What would it take to convince me?

A lot more than a few statistics and computer models developed in the last couple of decades. Which have been seriously revised during that time period as well. Going from global warming to climate change is total bullshit as well. Giving the appearance that the smart guys don't really know what they're doing. Of course climate is changing! That proves nothing. It's been changing for millennia. And because climate is changing, doesn't matter how, scientific theories are always correct!:rofl

I also know a little about how statistical studies are done, and paraphrasing Bismarck, no one really wants to know how legislation, sausages and statistical studies are done.:wow

There are different areas of study that show a correlation between human activity and climate.

One I found interesting was the number of lightening strikes in the dry Owens lake bed and deforestation in the Southern regions of our continent.

This thread has me digging out my old schoolwork. If I had a day I could give you all so much interesting reading. Not to attempt to convince but rather to enlighten folks that don't believe in cause and causation.

I'm waiting for the ramifications of the Three Gorges project.

I am curious why people that don't believe in climate change (or those that do but don't believe it's man made) think the title and tone of this thread is so bad. I don't see it as a "I'm right and you are wrong" kind of thing. On one hand you have a group of barfers that believes this. On the other you have a group that doesn't. The one side asks what it would take to convince the other side. The other side responds with "Good data". This is followed by "But there is a lot of data." And the response to that is "Don't call me stupid. Why act all superior with your data and shit?" This I don't understand.

The question still stands. The thread wasn't titled "Let me prove global warming" The thread was titled "What would it take to convince you of climate change?" I am not sure what it so scary and offensive to you guys.

Mt. Erebus in Antarctica spews more climate changing detritus into the atmosphere than all human activity combined.

That's one volcano.

Climate has been swinging away since the Earth was first stabilized as we know it today. Ice Ages, warming periods, Polar alignment, magnetic poles, shifting continents and water currents shifting with them.

To my mind, man made climate change is hubris of the highest order and a scam.

Pollution, well that's another thing, something we can control because we're producing it.

Climate changes - not so much.

I find it telling that political leftists are banding together for the climate change thing to control human activity. Power, control, $$. I see it as the latest angle the dishonest and the tyrannical are employing for their ends. Nothing more.

In short, it offends me and I am immune to all arguments, supposed "facts" and made up as they go along alarms.

Believe as you will, I represent the other team.

Hate to be that guy but Volcano's actually help lower the global temperature. They spew aerosols deep into the stratosphere and cause rapid temperature decreases. We saw this in the 90s with mount Pinatubo and again with the Icelandic volcano.

Everything else you brought up is true but that is under the time scale of thousands, hundred of thousands of years. We are changing the climate in less than a couple centuries which has never been done before. We also have checked to see if any of malankovich cycles, polarization, ocean currents etc have changed lately but their normal oscillations do not show that.

I don't see why you're bringing up politics into this again, there is literally no power or money to be made from educating people on climate change.

I view both sides of the argument but one side of the science actually has thousands of peer reviewed research papers to back it up while the other brings up findings from the 60s-70s. I can't take that seriously when you guys post websites that clearly have bias's and from data that is that old. You know what people thought was healthy in the 60s? Cigarettes.

.

Cmon. You dont actually believe this? There is billions at stake on both sides of this issue.

Yeah, thats what happened. :rofl

There is way more more to be made on the fossil fuel side than the other. Just look at the different wages when comparing the two different fields.

How would someone who wants to fight climate change make billions of dollars? I'm curious to what your answer is.

Im not really talking about the individual scientist. I dont think youre in it for the money. But there is money and politics involved by both sides.

i love how making money of polluting is good but making Money off changing the economy to a more sustainable one is bad

The current system is doing significant enviromental harm even without CC as a factor, and it's consolidating power and taking choice and freedom away from people, it literally ALREADY does all the bad things deniers think a new green economy would do

THATS ALREADY THE ECONOMY WE HAVE lol

Thats partly why people immediately jump on board, because its a positive in the end whether ther is agw or not. You couldnt care less whether man made climate change was real. Its just a means to an end. And i understand that to an extent. Cleaning up the planet isnt a bad thing.
