:laughing I wasn't even defending whether I was racist or not, so fail on your part for not even understanding the conversation. :laughing

The point was whether there were lots of white people out there spouting the n-word all over the place these days. I say no, because, well I've lived among white people all my life and almost never heard the word and still don't.

Oh and my BIL, who is black, said that he hasn't faced any overt racism (i.e., someone using the n word or directing similar racial slurs in his direction) in many, many years. But if HuffPo says it's epidemic, it must be so...:rofl

BTW, anyone who's hearing people say the n word all the time might want to change the group of people they're hanging around with.

I went on a few dates with a black chick and I asked her if she had ever experienced racism. She looked at me like it was the dumbest question ever but didn't get into details, that I can recall.
I suspect its alive and well and not going away anytime soon.
 
I was watching some Eddie Murphy stuff last night and it occured to me...

We all live in different worlds, different socioeconomic circles, different cliques, to say...
Each of our worlds is unique, as is our indivudual worldview.

Some of our worlds are pretty tolerant, others are harsh and mean.

I think we tend to think our worldview, what we see in our microcosym, applies everywhere.

I think that view is a mistake.
I could be wrong.

As much as I like to think of myself as enlightened... when I think back... it's likely my behavior could be racist. If not overt... certainly passive.

I recall working a contract at Jack London Square. The lion's share of the job was on the phone, entailed private information and I had a cube, not an office. I used my cell 98% of the time and would often leave the office and walk the streets in the area. I recall a few times finding myself on a desolate block. No one in sight except one other person. A POC walking towards me on the same side of the block. I can recall crossing the street to keep a buffer between us. Attire usually had something to with the decision. Was it racist? Makes me think.

In SF when going to Amoeba I'll stroll the street and see the sidewalk crowded with homeless kids smoking and drinking. Filthy and matted hair. But, they're white. Never have felt the need to cross the street. They usually part like the Red Sea when I approach them.

I don't know the answer. I've hired plenty of POC during my career, and have never felt threatened in a professional environment. It seems my street experience is a bit different.

Members in this thread shrugging off every day low level racism, like it doesn't or can't happen is appalling. Just because you don't see it, experience it, or at the very least acknowledge it's a thing, means it doesn't happen apparently.

So I just watched Blazing Saddles again for the first time in probably about 30 years or so.

It was clever. Lots of funny parts. But I'm not so sure about one of the top comedies of all time. I guess I was thinking it would be funnier. I was kinda let down. Didn't laugh as much as I thought I would.

Ya gotta take the racism as satire comedy of it's time.

True, but I do think it's important to differentiate between "this happens" and "this is a widespread epidemic representative of the majority of the population".

We (in the general sense) seem to be very bad at this.

Trying not to get political much here but you see it in many political debates.

No buts involved, it is a widespread epidemic. It happens everyday in every community. If you are open you will see it. One doesn't even have to seek it out.

It isn't as blatant as a white woman saying "nigger" it is reflected ever so subtly in customer service . It's the barrista moving the tip jar back a bit on the counter, it's the hotel maid not cleaning the bathroom, it exists everywhere.

It just wasn't as good as people are making it out to be.
But then to me most comedies suck. Except for anything with John Candy or Eugene Levy.

Just a few days ago, in a benign topic thread on another site, I saw the word "chinkanese" used to imply poor quality parts. Just the fact that the slur is used so easily, is the evidence of the racism that most of us don't feel is "truly" racist. This goes for gender issues too. I am still amazed sometimes at how often I hear a slur, being used AS a slur, in casual conversations.
