18 Crashes in a Single Day at Sturgis

What? School me oh hog culture.
Back in my Harley days, I encountered several riders who relied on the rear brake. They didn't trust the front brake. Maybe a carry-over from the days when Harleys had shitty brakes?
🤷‍♂️

Thanks, man. I just don't get why there are so many haters out there.
Because there's no shortage of obnoxious Harley riders out there who act like king shit but can't ride. The majority are salt of the earth folks who'll five you the shirt off your back, but the idiots stand out.

My perspective of Sturgis comes from the YouTube videos I’ve seen which always emphasize the outrageous aspects.
Good to hear it isn’t all like that.

The middle of the USA is flat and you have to hunt for curvy roads and cruisers make up the majority of motorcycles in the midwest. Add mountains and curvy roads and you're guaranteed lots of accidents plus accounting for 500 motorcyclists, alcohol and testosterone!

I have been following this VLOG. Interesting and fun as the guys are riding older harley's out. One panhead that needs constant love. Dude is riding his Dad's bike and working on it everyday. Sometimes every gas stop. :loco

They must have a good team along to edit shit up and upload. They just had their first day Sturgis on the vid last night (Day 7). Some bike washing and fun around town.

I think this is a decent idea of the general bike culture.

Here is Day 1 if you are interested.

Sturgis is on my list and I was in striking distance on my trip to Colorado this year. Saw plenty of Harley's out there, talked to a few of them either in pullouts. Met a guy who is gonna do the Hoka Hey challenge this year. Anyone who can complete that ride has my utter respect, it's nuts. I'll probably make it out to Sturgis one of these years just to experience it, probably should have done it this year since I already have the miles in, but I already committed to hanging with the folks and sailing with my dad in Grand Lake. If I do make it to Sturgis, hopefully it'll be on the Hypermotard so I can go tick off all the good roads with the bike unloaded.

While riding the Duc would be cool I think riding a sled would be fun and the beautiful roads are still worthy, just a little slower with a different sort of take. I have several friends there now and one is coming to Hawthorne @Mowertim. Having him be my Yoda would be sweet.

enjoyed the vid … the vintage Harley stuff really appeals to me. :thumbup

have fantasies of getting a pre-war knucklehead or ‘54-‘57 KH like Mr Elvis had … :laughing

guess the main reason to go to one of the big motorcycle rallies in the USA is to see the motorcycle racing. :ride

the Laconia Rally in New Hampshire used to have an AMA National Roadrace associated with it, and I’d go to that rally to club race in the support classes for the National in the late ‘80s.

I don’t think the Sturgis TT made the cut this year, but maybe the Jackpine Gypsies are still promoting their short track flat track event that was the AMA basis for Sturgis back in the day? :dunno

Hell yes.. :thumbup

2 shortrack races and the unique TT race. Plus the weird ADV bike race on the TT course.
Triumph won that last year and actually had two bikes on the podium.

Not many Rallies where you can see Pro Racing. I think Daytona and Sturgis are it, but not sure :dunno

^^ :thumbup

be pretty cool to find a shovel-head Sturgis … that was a bike I’d drool over when I was in HS. :laughing

I guess my ‘85 Super Glide Evo is getting pretty vintage these daze. :facepalm

I’d love to get to Daytona again (there was a club race at Daytona the week before the 200 that I did get to, back in the day) to see the short flat-track and motocross pro racing, someday, and ride a cool vintage bike from San Francisco to the justly famous Sturgis Rally, camping along the way … would be a total moto-pilgrimage. :blah

Those who go, Know.

When I grew up, Sturgis was the goal, make the trek, ride there, earn you road miles.

Go and experience the locals, you ARE attending their summer party, they get to see different groups rolling the Black Hills. Corvettes, Mustangs, even John Deeres, twingling, bomp, bomping along.
Locals set up tables, couches, under some shade along the roads, to enjoy the rolling spectacle.
As I posted before, Drop in to the Pasta Ranch midweek for a plate. Sit and watch the traffic, go by.
You are gonna see way more motos than cages, THAT pulls my heart strings.

I don't ride there anymore, last time I went, June to Sept. Go to the party and stay a few months.
My only maintenance, My truck lost the lift pump, in Colorado, Sturgis/Spearfish got new hot water heater, and a new refer.

GO

Last time I had my mini available, and used it. I have cruised Sturgis with my TW, and mini, into town.
The mini has run off and hid from the biggies, I was chasing a group of minis around Iron Mtn Rd.
with the turnouts for bypassing the tunnels, great fun. Definite lack of small bikes, bring one for fun too.

the locals in NH would also set up lawn chairs in front of their homes, like they were watching a parade. that was fun. :laughing

Sturgis has been on my bucket list to do for a very long time (decades). However I am not much of a socializing / crowd person, so it has been suggested to me by someone that has gone multiple times that perhaps I should go the week prior as vendors are setting up, spend the first day of the Rally and then leave if it ends up not being my thing.

Another rally that looks interesting is https://americade.com/
My son lived in upstate NY and when I helped him move back to California in 2022 is when I added Americade to the list - its beautiful there

:flag

More touch and feel that makes it look fun. :teeth

Swap meet is not my thing, but jumping Harleys, stupid minibike shit, a shit ton of bikes, couch and boat moto's, all kinds of unique people and general pandemonium and of course some good looking humans.

......and some WTF stuff of course! :laughing

I wish CA had rallys like Americade and Sturgis.
There used to be big rallies in the 70s. My dad was in a motorcycle club in San Diego and the biggest one of the year was put on by the MC Nuggets in Death Valley. We went there 3 years when I was a kid in a row till they shut it down because it got too big.

AI Overview

The Nuggets Motorcycle Club is known for its Death Valley run, which was popular in the 1970s. The club was established in the early 1970s with chapters in North Iowa and Grants Pass, Oregon. The Death Valley Run was a notable event organized by the club, specifically from 1975 onwards. The club also has a presence in California.

Nuggets Motorcycle Club started in 1962, from the Nugget Bar in Buena Park, Southern California. The original patch was a beer drinking rabbit on a motorcycle. These were the 3 things the Nuggets motorcycle club liked to do… Fuck like rabbits, drink beer & ride motorcycles. This patch was worn on a multicolor serape. In 1964 the patch was changed to as it is today. 1n 1968 the Nuggets Club House was opened also in Buena Park, CA. Nearly all clubs came, and obeyed the '"neutral ground" rule. That is not to say there were not any problems, but all problems were handled there. In the early 1970's North Iowa and Grants Pass, OR chapters were started. The Nuggets probably became best known for their runs. The Death Valley Run from 1975-1978. Riders came from all over the states and from other countries. Finally in 1979 the Nuggets were told they were not welcomed back. Then there was the Nuggets run at Big Oak Ranch in San Diego. All the Nugget runs are well attended because we know how to throw a fucking party. The Nuggets were also know for the Nugget Beer Truck. Many other clubs runs weren't scheduled until it was confirmed the Nugget Beer Truck was available . The party didn't start until the beer truck arrived and ended when the truck left. The 80's Brought other problems with the Nuggets, several members were given state and federal vacations. In the 2000's the Nuggets traded in the beer truck for the BBQ Tailor. The Nuggets MC are know for some of the Best BBQ at their runs and bike nights. Their bike night is called Nugget Night and runs at the club house the 2nd Saturday of the Month from Jan-Oct. Now the New Generation biker is among us. New clubs are starting every day; all different types. The Nuggets still remain a Traditional Motorcycle Club and Maintain the same values and traditions they had when the club started.
