18 Crashes in a Single Day at Sturgis

Back in my Harley days, I encountered several riders who relied on the rear brake. They didn't trust the front brake. Maybe a carry-over from the days when Harleys had shitty brakes?
🤷‍♂️
Harleys come with pretty good brakes these days and if you don't like them, there is a lot of aftermarket support. What you say about in the past about a lot of riders relied more on the rear brakes and were afraid to use their front brakes has some truth to it but that's not the case anymore. I was taught by my dad to rely mostly on your front brakes if you need to stop fast, but he was a Gold Wing rider back in the 70s and not a Harley rider.

I believe the Holister rally still goes on.

That famous black and white photo with the biker on his bike drinking beer with beer bottles strewn about the road where he was parked was set up by the photographer.

And the riders who didn’t know how to modulate the front brake are the ones who started the myth about not using the front brake. When they’d brake suddenly, they’d grab a big handful of front brake with predictable results. They didn’t know how to ride.

You don’t have to go far. There’s Street Vibrations in Reno, NV, at the end of September. Thousands attend.
Ah, ok good to know.
It’s nearly 1400 miles to Sturgis and a lot of us don’t have the time for that.
Reno is more doable.

This is true of a lot of motorcycle riders in general, not limited to one sect. I always encourage new motorcyclists or those wanting to get a motorcycle to take skills courses beyond what is needed to get your motorcycle endorsement. The motorcycle safety course is great but that's just a starting point in my opinion. I also tell those folks to start out on dirt bikes because, by default, you will learn how to handle your bike when you lose traction on the front, rear, or both wheels, plus crashing on a dirt bike is generally a lot more forgiving. Of course they'll have to unlearn some dirt riding skills for the street (like I did) but it's not that difficult to make the switch.

Some people rent a motorcycle closer to Sturgis SD and fly into Denver or another airport not too far away. I was looking at doing that about 10 years ago when I also didn't have time off from work to do that.

I forgot to also mention if time is your enemy, you can ship your bike to some place closer to Sturgis then have it shipped back. It's cheaper than you might think. My former coworker did this and it worked out well for him.

Now I am really itching to go. :laughing

A different view of Hollister '47. Booze Fighters, locals

There are way more camping opportunities now, than back when the City Park contained all the partiers .

Clubs like the Hamsters, big money VIP's, custom bikes, hauled in transporters, hauled to The Chip, or Deadwood's Casinos. HeliTaxi ?
There will be escorted rides, charity stuff, some even furnish demos, usually a dinner or show following,
prime entertainment, on location, every day.

One could climb Bear Butte, sacred space, out in the middle of the big campgrounds.
Monsoon is a problem, big hail shows up in big thunderheads, I have seen camps trashed, stake your tent.
Speed limits change daily, dropping due to influx of arriving rally attendees.
Web Cams, a whole page of them.

GO !

Barf rally?
I don't think so.. trying to get accomodations and coordinate a bunch of people would be nuts.
Organizing all that stuff and herding the cool cats would be one hell of a task.

A small group ride one day perhaps.

Lemme know how it goes.
I'll be home tinkering on my sportbikes. I know my limitations. :laughing

The Harley Jump was really cool and better film was on the Thrashin VLOG last night.

I know we've drifted off from the original post just a bit.
Speaking of Rallys, did a quick scan through the preceding post and didn't see the Reno - Street Vibrations event mentioned.
The Fall rally is this September 25-27, 2025.

My best idea of a Sturgis BARF Rally,
is to rent a house in Sturgis for a month, and plan on rotating Barfers in & out as personal vacation time allows. Much like my ski leases
Ship stuff there, have it waiting, as needed, ship it home,

Yes, good buddy of mine folks lived about 5 miles east of Sturgis. They said a lot of town folks would rent out their houses for 2 to 3 weeks and they'd go on vacation. Others would "rent out" a camping spots on their front lawns. The Rally brings in a huge "cash" influx for the surrounding area.

Dunno....I'd kinda half expect to see a mushroom cloud over where my house used to be when I got back.
I've heard stories....
