Alta Redshift MX Second Impressions

For our factory setup, we charge two bikes at a time at 3000W (2 hour full recharge) each from a Yamaha 7000W generator (which is a monster, but actually way smaller than the Honda equiv), which I can highly recommend along with the Hondas. We're testing out cheaper options from Lifan and Harbor Freight, and while our chargers have had no problem handling the "dirtier" waveform from those, we don't have enough time on them yet to recommend them.

Also of note is that, because there are so many 240V plug standards (the Yamaha uses an L6-30 I think, and the Lifan uses a 14-30 I think), we ship the charger with a 110V 3 prong NEMA 5-15 (standard 110V US outlet). However, it is fully compatible with 240V in the US and just requires a plug swap (by a licensed electrician, of course) once you know exactly which standard you're using.

Hi Marc, thanks for the info about the generators.

Is Alta still planing to come to Bell day at HH this weekend if it doesn't get rained out? I'd like to try the MX.

Also, is the charging linear? Does 1 hr charge the battery 1/2 way, or is it more asymptotic, where it charges faster and then tapers off towards the end of the charge. In other words, do you get more than 1/2 charge in 1 hour?

Just watched the 20 minute transworld video with your CTO Derek and was that a white DS in the background??? Looks like it had mirrors and maybe front turn signals, but it was a bit blurry.

Yup, we'll be there! First come, first served and we don't really know the turnout, so I suggest getting there early if you can.

Right now it's linear, but that's a function of the source. The bike can take all 3000W that a 240V source can deliver, so it takes two hours to get to 5800kWh, and yeah 1 hour will give you about a half charge. If/when J1772 chargers are readily available, we'll switch over to that standard and that will enable faster charging (and we can make current bikes compatible retro-actively), but for now we chose ubiquity (standard outlets) over speed.

It was probably one of our pre-production supermotos, or an MX set up for mileage accumulation.

Are you going to offer a skid plate, kickstand, 18" rear wheel option, and/or other off-road accessories?

Usually the aftermarket companies sort that stuff out, but I'd expect a KTM 18" to be plug and play. Skid plates are also really straightforward to make. Maybe send PMB an email on the kickstand.

Will a Scotts Steering Stabilizer fit?

This is key. I swear i will bring my Redshift up for Lou's evaluation once this is available. I swear.
I want a kickstand first. I already have the 18 inch rear wheel. That was easy, thanks to Alta...

Lack of a kickstand does has some benefits: "I'd help you pull your bike out of that hoe but I don't have..."

Yup, coming soon on all of those... they were a top priority. 18" rear I think is already available from Warp 9.

We haven't figured out yet if there's an existing mount that works, but probably not. I hope as more Redshifts are in the wild, they are willing to create one for us. Interestingly, there is a boss on the headstock that may just be compatible with the Honda steering damper...

As an aside, I think you will find the handling naturally very stable. We haven't encountered much in the way of headshake.

We do, in fact, run the same rear spacing as KTM, so while I can't call a KTM approved, if it meets our specs it will work on a Redshift. Front hub is not compatible, as we run a wider axle and triples that allow the same hub to be used with a 4 piston Brembo caliper without clearance issues.

Actually kidding on the Scotts, though I would like Lou to ride my Redshift so he can share his opinion.

He does know his shit. Some of you know that. Dampners, and all.

Marc, I'm sure the answer is no, but would Alta be willing to through on the MX fork and wheels on the SM? I really want the plate.

Also, is it correct the SM is $13.9k? The website says $15.5k but the deposit says $13.9k. Is a rebate figured into that price?

Might be kind of cool if they sold the SM without suspension and wheels.

Hi. Please allow me to answer: you guessed right about the answer being "no."
It is not for a lack of will though, as we would love to be able to mass produce customized bikes. However we are not mature enough that we want to introduce too many variables on the manufacturing line. Our #1 goal is quality (actually it is safety first, so let's call quality 1B) and building the same bike continuously is the best way to reach that goal.

The other option is to purchase the forks and wheels as accessories (I would suggest to get the front brake as well).

Finally (and don't tell Marc I mentioned this), I heard stories about our MX bike being delivered with an MSO which might allow you to register it on the street in some states *wink wink*

Nice catch, I think that's a holdover from the Fed tax rebate which is now expired. Will let the team know. The retail is $15.5k

Looks like Lewis chimed in about the forks. Yeah, sorry we can't build bikes that way just yet.

Notable that the WP 4CS forks and Brembo 2 piston brake from some other models on the market will fit, as long as you stick with our triples, axle and front hub so you may be able to do the swap fairly cheap with some eBay spare parts.

Are the new air forks going to be on the bikes soon? They're getting rave reviews and it's an easy way to shave a couple pounds.

See post 21. That bike has lights.

Ive been riding here every day, expanding my trail network while the ground is hero dirt.

Hey Butch, where is that?

East San Jose, unincorporated, off mt Hamilton road. So near, yet so far, from the industrial world.

I love it here. Apparantly the schools are not like Cupertino though,
