Any (4-wheel) Overland types in here?

I have a lifted 4x4 that I like to take to remote areas for camping and recreation. But the whole "overlanding" scene seems very heavily gear focused and a lot of dick measuring based on who's got what kit.

Maybe you found a cooler crew. Your pics do make it look like you're having a great time

They can call it what they like.

To me, the original idea of overlanding was an attempt to copy the "explorer" ideals.
Camping is "for the destination".
i.e. "We're going to the lake and spending the weekend..."

Overlanding is "for the journey".
i.e. " We're going to take this trail, and see where it goes. we're aiming for______ to be reached in a few days".

But it definitely seems to have become a new fashion show! :wow

I don’t get all that hung up on definitions and labels. I can’t be the full-time wanderer/explorer that everyone pretends to be, I get out a couple of weekends a month and drag some friends along and I have fun with what I do. No, I don’t do any “serious wheelin’” because I won’t do that with a $40,000 truck. My goals are to get out in the woods with my dog, spend the night around a campfire, and sleep under the stars. My truck and gear are tailored towards making that as hassle-free as possible and dealing with SHTF situations.

I get you guys about the fashion gear thing though. Have you guys seen the pics/vids from Overland Expo West this past weekend? I tuned out. Some of these guys are geared up like they’re going deep into the Sahara. There’s definitely some poser Kool-Aid going around but if they’ve got money to burn, that’s their business.

People need to stop giving too much of a fuck about what other people are doing. If a dude wants to drive his 8-mpg Defender to his accounting 9-5 in LA that’s his business.

And Charles R, love the pictures man. I need to spend more time in the Eastern Sierras. I loved going up and down 395 on the bike but haven’t spent much time off-road on 4-wheels in that area. I’m trying to find a good deal on a used camera so I can go Milky Way hunting over there this summer.

Ton of great areas on both sides of the Sierra range. I like the west sides for quick weekend runs, as you can get to a number of trailheads in about 3-4 hours. I haven't explored the east side as much because i kind of enjoy the open high plains just east of 395.

I'll shoot you some invites when we head out. Right now i have a fussy transmission in the green Heep that's keeping it out of the action, and the silver one isn't set up for sleeping. But trips are coming!

Was it a gun totin' shit show with the locals at Usal? Every time I've been there on a weekend it was god awful, loud music, fireworks and gunfire.
I ride my bike over the Mendo and camp there a few times a year, I never go on weekends. Last year was there on a Thursday night and it was absolutely perfect! When there are not crowds it is a great place.

Not so much guns, but definitely the fireworks. Apparently we picked the same damn weekend the locals do their annual "May feed" event on. There was only 4 rigs sleeping on the beach but the actual campground was packed with the locals. There were trucks and dirt bikes crossing the creek (despite the signs) and doing donuts on the sand.

Drinking and fireworks until 3AM. We decided to get out of there at 5:30AM before the zombies woke up.

State Parks needs to get in there and saturate that area, write tickets, and lock people up for the next year to curb some of the shit that we saw there. Just straight disrespect and whitetrashery by the locals who take it for granted that that gem is in their backyard.

A good camper will take you many places. I have gone from Key West to Niagra Falls in my little camper.

I still want a Unimog

Me too!

This guy was parked next to me at Portola Valley a couple of weeks ago and I had to take a snapshot. You ever just catch a glimpse of another dude's life and go "yea, that dude's living right!"? This was one of those moments. :laughing

I still want a Unimog

I have a 1964 406 5.7l straight 6 diesel

It needs a dedicated tow vehicle, top speed is 46mph and when i drove it around town i started in 3rd and had to shift into 4th to get it rolling more then 5 mph.

Some rigs from the Trail.Team overland swap meet at Oakland last week.

There are more streetable variations

The rumor that has Toyota fans foaming at the mouth is that they are bringing the Highlux, including a diesel version, to the states. There are also some mild rumors of a new FJ, because the money being made by FCA solely from the wrangler is very hard to ignore.

For Ford, it's a new Bronco that looked like it might have been a two door wrangler competitor... But the latest news deflated that a bit. They still have the modern Ranger, that has a Raptor-esque version coming up.

For pure off road, it's still hard to compete with the wrangler. But pretty much anything drives nicer on the roads. And the wranglers have squat for towing capacity.
