I have a lifted 4x4 that I like to take to remote areas for camping and recreation. But the whole "overlanding" scene seems very heavily gear focused and a lot of dick measuring based on who's got what kit.
Maybe you found a cooler crew. Your pics do make it look like you're having a great time
They can call it what they like.
To me, the original idea of overlanding was an attempt to copy the "explorer" ideals.
Camping is "for the destination".
i.e. "We're going to the lake and spending the weekend..."
Overlanding is "for the journey".
i.e. " We're going to take this trail, and see where it goes. we're aiming for______ to be reached in a few days".
But it definitely seems to have become a new fashion show!![]()
I don’t get all that hung up on definitions and labels. I can’t be the full-time wanderer/explorer that everyone pretends to be, I get out a couple of weekends a month and drag some friends along and I have fun with what I do. No, I don’t do any “serious wheelin’” because I won’t do that with a $40,000 truck. My goals are to get out in the woods with my dog, spend the night around a campfire, and sleep under the stars. My truck and gear are tailored towards making that as hassle-free as possible and dealing with SHTF situations.
I get you guys about the fashion gear thing though. Have you guys seen the pics/vids from Overland Expo West this past weekend? I tuned out. Some of these guys are geared up like they’re going deep into the Sahara. There’s definitely some poser Kool-Aid going around but if they’ve got money to burn, that’s their business.
People need to stop giving too much of a fuck about what other people are doing. If a dude wants to drive his 8-mpg Defender to his accounting 9-5 in LA that’s his business.
