Any (4-wheel) Overland types in here?

reminds me of an old trans am we had. thing was a tank. it was low and wide, but it had enough grunt to power through pretty much anything. and we didn’t give two shits about body damage, so it was used and abused off road. loved - as you say, to arrive in remote locations and getting WTF stares from 4 wheelers. our insurance company HATED us. worst event was stuffing it (at a bit more than appropriate speed) between 2 trees that were about 18 inches narrower than the car. squirted through, but the damage was done nose to tail. came within $200 of totalling it. they covered it, but then suggested we go find another insurance company lol.

:laughing Excellent! There's something about taking inappropriate machinery into inappropriate places that just makes me giggle :laughing

I've noticed a few BMW GS owners with modern Tacomas and the like who are all lights and no lockers, but the idea has potential.

Hey now! Some of us in modern Tacomas have light bars AND rear lockers! :laughing

Cool thread! Enjoying all the photos! :thumbup

Damn girl! You’ve already done a few of my bucket list places. Is that last pic of Bald Mountain?

I can't add light bars, because Lucas wiring. Otherwise I would be tempted.

Finding lockers for the Salisbury differentials has become quite a task.

No, but it's close. We trailered the 610's down there to do some riding, but we drove up to Bald Mt the next morning to catch the sunrise. That whole area has so much to offer...it's right near the Dusy Ershim Trail! :teeth

I have a 1946 CJ2A hanging out if anyone has urges towards such a vehicle. Bought it right before the Rover.

My buddy has a present addiction to FCs. Much like everything else built by Willys/Kaiser/AMC/Jeep/etc., they're rustmagnets. And they've gotten stupid trendy over the last few years. I've been trying to talk him into profit taking and let them go.... :laughing

I hear you!

I know where an FC is at here in the south bay. I won't go over there because I'm afraid it'll actually be for sale at a reasonable price... And THEN it'll cost me big money! Lol

But for the record... An FC with my CRD Jeep drivetrain (mercedes OM642+722.6+NP241) portal axles and a vintage look camper would be great fun!

I have to ask and please don't take it as a dig at your craftsmanship, but how much shifting and rattling do you get from your setup when you're ripping the trails?

Actually, almost none. If I remember to secure all the loose shit in the cab. My two biggest rattles came from the seatbelt buckles in the rear seats banging against the pillars, velcro fixed that.

This past weekend at Usal I was getting a squeaking, I think from my passenger-side leaf, every time the truck rolled counterclockwise, but that’s it.

Damn, nice rig Alan! really like that grill.

What did you do to upgrade the suspension? How much of a lift is that you got?

Nothing yet. I bought the truck with 10,000 miles in it (it was a repo job) with a spacer lift, and wheels/tires already installed. I'm still shopping for suspension components, but the only thing I got so far is a separate set of OEM leafs with an Icon AAL already installed. Still debating between Icon/King/Fox/OME so I'm still just kinda waiting for a deal to fall in my lap in that regards.

I'm gonna pull the trigger soon on a Southern-Style Off-Road Slimline Hybrid bumper and a winch and that will pretty much complete the truck so I can focus on the suspension.

We have a Sprinter Dually. It isn't 4WD but with a winch we can go anywhere.

The poor van is beat to hell on the outside but it's our home on the road and we love it.

I hunted extensively in my Land Rover. All over the western US.

It was a great ride. I now have a Jeep Grand Cherokee.:thumbup

My niece and her husband really wanted one of those Sprinter van setups, even flew out here from Chicago to look at some used ones, in the end they just cost too much money and they ended up getting an older Dodge Ram with a truck camper.

I still get a little jelly when I see a Sportsmobile E350 on the road.

I had a Sportsmobile high top van but sold it and bought a Tacoma. I decided to go back to traditional camping in a tent.

The Sportsmobile van was way too big for the trails I wanted to go on. It was great to have everything at the ready without having to set up though.

Impossible to find the 'perfect' rig because there's no such thing.
