Any BARF Audiophiles?

The 275 is one of the very amps we drove them with. With six LaScalas, two Sensurround subs, a couple of 275'2 a Mac 2100 and a Mac 2300, we measured 140 db on the back wall of a 2,000 seat auditorium. Put on the 1812 Overture and the first cannon shot blew out a candle five feet in front of the sub.

LaScalas are great. A good friend has a pair, and I'm always impressed by how clear they sound at just low level background music. Bet they'd be nice with that Mac 275.

I've heard the combination before, it sounds like they were designed as a solution by the same team. I've got mine running mono mode, one for each speaker, and I'd love to hear a pair of La Scalas with a pair of 275s...

Soooo...I know essentially nothing about high end audio but I just (somewhat impulsively) bought myself a set of Vienna Acoustics Mozart Grand speakers off Craigslist.

They are beautiful too look at and I am told they sound really, really good but I can't listen to them yet since I don't have an amp/receiver of any sort. What should I be looking for to drive these things? Would like to keep it under $400, used stuff is fine. Audio source will be coming from a laptop most likely, No turntables or analog stuff. 4 ohm, recommended 30-200 watts.

Please school me. Thanks

Factory refurb; many AVS Forum members including myself have had great success buying factory refurbs from these guys.

4ohm stable.

I can bring this over and we can try it! :party:rofl:rofl

On the serious side, I can loan you a Crown K1 (550w into your 4 ohm load @ 1 kHz with 0.1% THD), it should at least give you something to play with until you find your own.

You're in Richmond and I'm in the south bay, but I might be headed up that way tomorrow during the day or we can work something out on a day when I'll be at my house in Milpitas.

I ordered up a cheapish Blue-tooth integrated amp for the meantime (Nuforce dd-120, hope it will work alright) that will likely wind up in the workshop at some point when I track down something better for a good price to run the Mozarts.

Brichter, I am stupid busy this week but would love to get together sometime and pick your brain, and hear what the good stuff is supposed to sound like. I am total newb in this world, been living on a boat the last bunch of years listening to $30 bluetooth speakers.

It sucks listening to music on my macbook while these speakers are sitting in the living room doing nothing.

"Stupid busy" is shorthand for "living in the bay area". :rofl

I feel your pain, I'm not only looking (not very hard ATM LOL) for a job, but in the initial stage of a full remodel of my house in Milpitas, as well as landscaping the backyard of my townhouse, not to mention all the knick-knack BS on the dirt bikes and rod bearings in the race car.

I swear, I'm busier now that I'm "semi-retired" than I was last year when I was working full time. Sometimes I can't wait to go back to work so I have more free time... :cry

Yep, we are doing up a squatted, foreclosed house that didn't have doors or plumbing when we bought and also trying to do a bare hull rebuild on a sailboat while both working. Somehow it will all work out....

Boat == a hole in the water you throw money into. Learned that lesson long ago, no more boats for me. :)

Don't get me wrong, I love boats.
Other people's boats. :teeth

Finally got my amp, holy shit these speakers are great. Never heard anything like them.

It's fun to see fellow BARFers enjoying music and the equipment. Things have been really busy since my last post. Spent most of the summer traveling the US and Europe.

Thought I'd have a Primaluna by now, but haven't gotten one due to multiple reasons. Not a problem though. I've been enjoying the heck out of my Jolida 202. Haven't rolled any tubes and don't plan to until I get a Primaluna. Love to have an Airtight, but don't have the bank. I'll keep looking until a screamin' deal presents itself. :teeth

I was able to score separate deals on sets of Nordost Blue Heaven speaker and interconnect cables. Nice additions.

Was at the Moss Landing Street Fair last weekend and scored a stack of vinyl for ~ $2.00 per record. :thumbup Also introduced my son to both Streetlight and Rasputin's records.

Keep having fun, peeps. :thumbup

I'd been toying with upgrading my Jolida 202a integrated amp with a Primaluna Prologue Two or a Classic integrated amp; or maybe moving straight to Primaluna Dialogue integrated.

Instead, I went against all the advice I was given and rolled the tubes instead. WOW! I wish I wouldn't have waited so damn long. Bass finally showed up! All the new tubes are matched quads or pairs. All the tubes had been original OEM Jolida labeled tubes. I'm guessing they were circa 2003ish.
  • EL34s were replaced with 4 New Genelex KT77 Gold Lions - These increased the bass big time
  • 12AX7s were replaced with 2 NOS Siemens Halske 5751 E83CC 12AX7 - These brought out much more detail in the highs in mids
  • 12AU7s were replaced with NOS Amperex Bugle Boy 12AU7/ECC82 Holland - These further refined the overall sound including tightening up the bass, but the changes were subtle

The final set I rolled were the two stock tubes that had been in my Parks Audio Budgie MM phono preamp - 2 Russian Electro Harmonic 6922EHs. I replaced those with 2 NOS German Siemens Halske E188CC 7308 gray plate (CCa 6922). I'm still burning these in, so I'll know more in the coming weeks.

Very little of my entire system is made up of "New" anything. Most is used or NOS, so the I've been able to keep the entire system cost well within reason. The good news is that even my wife loves having music in the house again, so that's been a big win. :thumbup

I have the little Jolida 102B, it's a nice little amp. I have had it for many years and I'm on my 3rd set of power tubes. I have not heard the Jolida 202 but it sounds like you are having good results. I recently bought a Primaluna Dialog and I can tell you that it is a fine amp, doesn't get any better. Highly recommended.
