I am building an .308 from an AR-10 lower. Milled it myself 
I can hunt in CA with it. I have a Nikon scope to mount on it 
I also built an AR-15 that we plink with, I hit a bullseyes from 200 yards with iron sights.
I wouldn't hunt big game with the AR-15 with the exception of the small deer we have out here. For example I wouldn't use it for Elk but I am going to use my .308 for my elk hunts.
It is plenty powerful enough for me to stock my freezer full of meat.

For California use? I highly doubt it. But I'm one of those "Kommie" gun owners that doesn't see the point in civilians owning weapons designed for military use.

My buddy just built a discreet carry backpack rig for his AR-15 set up. I honestly don't really get the appeal. I have soft cases for my long guns.
