BARF Militia

Took my FSC test and purchased a Glock 22 today from Jackson Arms. Shot about 10 different handguns over the last month, mostly 9 mm and .40 trying to choose my first handgun. I kept gravitating back to the g17 and g22. PUMPED!

now I need some ammo. Apparently you can't buy it online if you live in SF.

Is the upcoming gun show at Cow Palace any good?

Can you guess the model year? My brother flew to Cali yesterday and brought me my rifle. :banana

I have a few lever action marlins. One of my favorite hunting guns is an old .35 Marlin lever action.

The old Marlins are the lever-action rifles to have imho. Side eject (sorry Winchester 94), and the oh so chic gold-colored trigger.

(dubs' ca friendly ar pics)

Nice, dubs. What are you using for a handguard? I'm looking for something like that, mid to full length, able to mount accessories, smooth enough to hold barehanded, though I don't need the picatinney on top. Less than $100 would be nice. Does yours have the locking ring with set screws? Not too fond of that design, but it works. Also, may as well move the red dot to the receiver, it doesn't need to be that far away and hinders accuracy.

Put it on the receiver? I'll try that. Never shot an AR with a red dot before.

Not sure the make but it's a keymod free float handguard and yes it as the lame locking ring. Not a fan of that either but it does have the allen on the bottom side to tighten down and prevent it from backing off. It was an upper kit I bought from Daytona Tactical around Christmas on sale. Think it was $375 with the upgrade to a 16" stainless barrel. It is 300 blackout which is usually a little more $$ than 223 stuff.

Right on, I'll check them out. How do you like the Thordsen? I was surprised how comfortable and natural it feels.

^^^ I was surprised how comfortable it was too. I have longer arms for my height so it fit great for me. I think its the same length as a fully extended stock. The newer kits come with a rounded end plate. This can be bothersome in the web of your hand if not rounded enough. I may get a file and radius the end plate and back of the lower more. It's sure nice to be able to drop a mag with the push of button. Don't forget to swap out the flash hider with a brake or compensator. Oh and install an ambi safety if your thumb doesnt reach. Mine doesnt so using my index finger on my right hand will help.

At first I was like, "I don't need this stupid end plate!", but then I quickly realized it wasn't stupid and that I needed it. Yeah you've got to remember about the barrel device to stay out of trouble, I just use a thread protector. Not sure if my thumb reaches, I don't normally use the safety, just drop mag and clear round. If I could machine it again, I probably wouldn't even mill a spot for it.

Marlins are absolutely better than Winchesters. I'm in between having a 30-30, but I have a Model 39a 22lr, a 336 35 Remington, a 375, and a 444. I'd like a 32 Special to round things out.

Gotta get a clavicle breaking 45-70 at some point!
That's like asking a guy with a ZX10 why he doesn't get a Z-1.
I wish Marlin made the 336 in .357.

The 336 action isn't very well suited to the shorter rounds. That's why Marlin dropped the 336 44 mag after only a couple years then brought out the 1894. The 1894 market is odd too. I guess they didn't make as many 357s as 44s. When I see a 44 for sale, it's usually $600-800. On the rare occasion I find a 357, it's $1000 or more.

It was a recommendation to the "rounding things out part" but I missed you had the .444, so yeah, you've definitely got the big end covered.

I got a sweet deal on the 444, and I love it. I shot a deer with it this year, but I probably won't do it again. Blew the shoulder out, (the deer, not mine) and did a good bit of meat damage. The good thing is there was no tracking involved, dropped where I shot her.

The difference between 444 and 45-70 for me is reloading. I already have 44 stuff, so I didn't need to add a new range of bullets.

I guessed as much, I'm just partial to the 336 looks and such over the Winchester clones.

Right on, both are cannons. I have a couple levers, but one is 30-30 and the other is 25-35, both fine for deer. I bet that .444 would make a great hog gun!

Finally decided I need a 1911. After shooting my dads gold cup and droolingike crazy its time. Bad news is I'm a lefty and I'm wanting a rail. Was leaning towards SA loaded. Any of you have a 1911 with ambi safety you would want to let go? Roman, you guys have anything?
