BARF Militia

If I found a nice Sig in the pram I bought from eBay, I would count my lucky stars, NOT have been so rude as to call the Polizei on the seller, dammit!

:laughing:laughing:laughing

I hated the XD from the first time I touched one when it first came out at the 2001 Shot Show. My opinion hasn't changed.

although its a S.A...i didnt like it much either...i think because it was my sisters bf's favorite pistol...and because it didnt fit in my hands right...

oh yeah..i PWND him shooting the USP with him and the XD :devil

:p

but but but....im a shooter...!!!!!!!!!:cry

You and your Striders. :rolleyes

Wanna buy my Gen6 SnG Digi? I'm kinda itching for an RMJ Forge 'hawk, or another Gununting...

I'm curious - what don't you like about it? I know Zefflyn hates the looks of it...

It started with the looks. Then I racked the slide and dry-fired it and felt the 14.6 stage trigger. It felt like the winding mechanism on those wind-up toys, "creak, creak, creak, creak, break". My buddy Peter and I literally fell over laughing at the Shot Show right in front of the SA rep. I've heard they have vastly improved it in the last 7 years but my opinion has been forever ruined.

Hey I'm not saying my disdain is logical. It's just there, like my disdain for SIGs, Volvos, Macs, etc...

I see...so, it's the trigger pull.

I don't know much about what makes a good pistol but I do know that I like how the XD feels in my hands compared to Sigs and 1911s -- which is blasphemy to most folks. I don't like the looks or feel of glocks either. I guess that's why they make all the different models, right? ;)

The CZs have been looking nice the more I shoot them but my heart still belongs to HK USPs.

Tomorrow I'm headed to Castro Valley Arms (Bullseye Castro Valley) to potentially start the DROS on a Buckmark and Shotgun. Or maybe just Buckmark. Or maybe just shotgun. I dunno....

Picked up the Thunder Ranch Defensive Handgun DVD - I wonder how it's gonna be...

Have you tried the USP yet Brandon. I was all excited for getting mine, but to tell the truth have been pretty disappointed in it. It just doesn't feel right in the hand. Give a hard look to the CZ, they are fantastic pistols and much cheaper than the USP. Let's try and get shooting soon and I'll let you try the USP so you can make up your own mind.

Everytime I see an XD or Glock I think of this. :barf Sure it may be utilitarian, but does it have to be fugly?

I find the Glocks to be a pretty good looking pistol, blocky but clean looking. I find the XD to be a bit ungainly looking.

Thanks for the offer but I actually don't like shooting the HKs anymore than I like the Sigs. They're both good looking, well mad guns but they just don't feel right in my hand and I don't like the triggers on either one.

However, I do find the USP to be a gorgeous gun...

Miran was nice enough to let me shoot his CZ and, while he doesn't think the trigger is great, I didn't have a problem with it.

However, tomorrow is about buying a Buckmark. The CZ (or whatever) will have to wait! Let's still go shootin though :teeth

Well, I can't find a Winchester 1300 ANYWHERE. It seems they've gone out of business so they've become VERY hard to find... In fact, most store clerks say, "If you find one, buy it so I can buy it from you" :laughing

The 870 is the standard but I like the looks and feel of the Benelli Nova. But I think I'll put this purchase off a bit.

But now I'm off to Bullseye Castro Valley!

I have a Nova turkey gun. They are nice. I like the feel of the Winchester better, but the Nova is a great platform and can cycle pretty quickly. I thought the Defenders were still being made because they were made by FN and not by the company that went out of business. Oh well, glad I got mine when I did. Wish I woulda picked up another to make it all tacticool and stuff.

So, I spent some time shooting this weekend.

5) I want to take some defensive handgun training classes - any *reasonably priced* local options? I don't have the time or $$$ to go to Thunder Ranch or other schools...

Go to Diablo Valley College (or any college/university that offers Police Cadet courses) and take their 'Self Defense & Small Arms' course. In the old days, ammo was free, as long as you fired .357, .38, .40, or .45, now you bring your own. Good instructor at DVC, Matt Morrison, he's a Concord PD vet & instructor there, and you get unarmed combat, Miranda, the usual stuff, and go to the Concord PD range. You get range days, including combat shotgun, and you can do stuff you just can't do at a civilian range. Double-taps, fast mag changes and rapid-fire. Bring extra mags... :laughing

Great course, highly recommended. :thumbup

So, I went to Castro Valley Bullseye today and was a bit underwhelmed by there stock. However, I was VERY pleased with the service!

I was chatting the guy up about the Buckmark and MK III and messes up my plan and puts a Sig Mosquito in my hands. I've heard nothing positive about the Mosquito on the InterWeb (mostly FTF) so I was hesitant. But I put it in my hand and I instantly liked how it felt. A guy happened to walk in and he purchased one of the 12 they had sold recently and he mentions that he really likes his Mosquito and that crappy ammo is generally the problem. So, I thank them both and leave to do some research.

I decide a little range time with my XD is in order so I can sight in my new Streamlight TLR-2 - total tacticool bling, but it has provided some interesting observations.

1) Compared to a buddies Surefire, I feel like I got the deal of the century on the TLR-2. For a touch over $200 it has a 100 lumen LED and a fully adjustable laser. Pretty cool in my book...

2) During dry-firing at home I can clearly see how much the barrel moves with each trigger pull. It's been useful to analyze my grip and to work on a smooth trigger break but pretty much any trigger time would help me out. And $200 is still a nice chunk of change.

3) Once sighted in, it makes consistent groupings a breeze. It's almost like cheating. In fact, it is cheating. But for a home defense item, I can easily see it's usefulness.

On a side note, without the laser I'm becoming a much better shot. No more first round flyer or (really) wide groupings. I may never be a great marksman but I can at least become proficient.

Back to the Mosquito: TargetMasters happened to have a Mosquito to rent and I enjoyed shooting it quite a bit. No FTF or FTEs and most Mosquitos need a few thousand rounds to smooth out and it seems this one has had a rough life based on the wear I saw. TargetMasters didn't have one to purchase, so I headed over to Reeds to see what they had. Sure enough, they had a Mosquito they were anxious to move for only $280 (after a little negotiation). It seemed like a good enough deal for me to purchase and if the pains are just too much I'll dump it and (try to) pick up and Buckmark with the fiber optic sights (which seem impossible to find). So, we'll see how it goes...only 11 days to wait...

I have a Mosquito too. That's a pretty damned good deal you got. Mine's been reliable and it feels good in the hand which was the selling point for me. Not nearly as accurate as the buckmark though. But the slides are made of pretty much pot metal and have been known to break. They are very ammo sensitive too. Mine won't run target stuff at all. It likes remmington copper jacket high velocity stuff.

I figure I'll have to stock up on Mini-Mags and suffer through some break-in FTFs but it should be fine for me...at least I hope so!

I wanted to get used to the features on it (that aren't on the XD) like a SA/DA trigger, decocker, and manual safety. I think might want a Sig P226 or a CZ 75 BD or a Hi-Point or....shit, I want a lotta guns!

I did start having problems with the XD today which seem to be operator error - the slide wasn't locking back after the last shot in each mag. I suspect that I didn't have the grip safety depressed all the way but it was mighty annoying. So, I'll have to change my grip and make sure I keep that grip safety depressed completely....
