BARF Militia

It's a great day to be at Chabot. I just left, and the main firing lines, rifle AND pistol, were all more than half empty!

Over on the 200 yard range, the weather was just right on the firing line, and in the pits. I managed to shoot somewhat consistently, had ZERO misses, and finally scored above 400! My best score ever: 410! :banana

Wellp, the Utah CCW class is done. Was fun to let loose a few rounds after not seeing the range for almost a year. Good to meet Nemo. It's a shame you can't use FMJ at that range, as that's the bulk of my 9mm stockpile.

I need 9 for skeet, at least for the Concord range, I think Martinez too.

Which walmart do you get 8's from? How much a box/case? The two closest to me (CoCo county) don't sell ammo

Hmm, I've never been asked what I was shooting when doing skeet. Is this for a competition? Walmart up here in Fairfield sells 100rd value packs of Winchester or Federal for I think $16 now.

I swear, those high-powers seem like magic to me. I made Brandon try it and I don't think he was impressed but it just feels so familiar in my hands. The 1911 is still a joy to shoot but requires more time between shots to reacquire the target and better trigger discipline.

There is a reason that the Hi-Power was the British SAS's choice of handgun for the longest time :thumbup

Is yours made in Belgium or is it the later models that were made in Belgium but assembled in Portugal?

Good to meet you as well! I still need to get my photo taken and fingerprints rolled, but once that's done I'll send off my Utah CCW application.

I did have one stovepipe malfunction during the test with the Federal 124 grain HSTs (in the 9mm CZ). Hmmm...gonna have to test that some more. Hope it was an isolated incident, or perhaps I need to try a different variety of JHPs.

As for the CCW, now I need to find something small and good holster for carrying inside a moto jacket...:teeth
Kahr PM9? Ruger SP101? S&W 3913? Springfield XD-9 Subcompact? Gonna have to do more shopping.

I shot the SP101 and the XD-9 Subcompact over the weekend. Both are great guns and it really depends on what you're looking for - revolver or semi-auto. I find the XD-9 semi a bit smaller with less edges to catch and the trigger is a bit better IMHO. I'm *real* curious about the Kahr - I've heard good things...

Or just go to AZ, where it's legal to carry loaded and exposed. :teeth

Finding a comfy holster is the hardest part, particularly for women, who are often covered in curves and cushie bits.

I was up at concord again yesterday, turns out you only need 9 shot on their north skeet ranges because the hill cover isn't as good for the houses nearby. You can use 8's on the southern skeet ranges. Helps to pay attention :x

Yeah, good question. I'm torn between the 12 oz. snubbies and things like the G26. The mouse guns, while neat for just carrying in a pocket holster, I think give up too much for the gain in size/weight to be used as the only or primary CCW piece.

Don't I know it--not that I'd give up the curves, necessarily. But the only holster type I've found that works well is a strong-side dropped offset...not really the best thing going in terms of concealment.
I do like the idea of the pocket "Nemesis" holster for the leetle Kahr; I'll have to investigate that possibility.

Thanks for the review on the XD9-SC and the SP101, uhmeebuh. I'll have to cruise around and try some rentals.

My brother-in-law has a SP101 in 9mm, and it's a sweet little shooter. He packs it for CCW instead of his Sig.

I've alternated between my GLOCK 19, HK P7M8, Beretta Tomcat .32, and maybe something else, too. The P7 was the most comfy in an inside-the-waistband holster because it's so thin, but it got feeling pretty darn heavy after a couple days. The GLOCK was fat, but fairly light, and shortish in length and height, so fit easily under a shirt. A 26 would probably be sweet. The Beretta was in a pocket holster, and worked fine there, but then I had to keep my keys somewhere else, and didn't have an extra pocket for my phone. I think I'd switch to Carpenter jeans for the third leg pocket if I did frequent pocket carry.

A Kahr would probably be really comfy in a waistband or pocket holster, but I just wonder what they are like to shoot. I shot one of the full-steel ones in .40 S&W back when they first came out, and it recoiled hard enough that the trigger knocked my finger painfully. I think they've started using dual recoil springs since then, though.

The next time we're at Chabot together, would you mind if I put a couple of rounds though your P7? Everyone tells me I have to shoot it to appreciate it. Personally, I don't don't see the allure, but maybe that's just cause I haven't shot one yet.

Sure. It feels kinda funny in the hand, because they are so long and thin, but the trigger is light and sweet like a rifle trigger.

And then there's this thing...

http://www.gunblast.com/Kel-Tec9mm.htm

It seems that, although the dimensions are awesome, it's gotten mixed reviews insofar as reliability. Not sure if those were early version kinks since resolved. And apparently this thing (like my P-32) has a trigger whereby you have to release it all the way (and trigger travel is about 3 miles long) to get it to reset. If you release it part way (to the first click), it will subsequently result in a light strike as the hammer will fall from the intermediate hammer-block position, and there's no re-strike capability.

I dunno.. but I wouldn't mind trying one.
