The Mosin Nagant line is pretty sweet, but if I could do it again, I'd go for the M38...same as the M44 but no side-folding bayonet. The bayonet complicates things. The 91/30 is also a great rifle, and the length makes it more accurate than the carbines. I'd go for that over the other two. Some were made in Tula, some in Izhevsk, both arsenals were great though, so no biggie. But yeah, both those prices seem a bit high, just keep checking calguns for one for sale.

IIRC: City Arms in Pacifica has a couple in the $299-399 range. Couldn't tell you what area or date range of manufacture though. Wasn't looking for another SKS...![]()
The Chinese ones are such garbage.
Don't shy away from Big 5's sales of Mosin Nagants. They usually have nice 91/30s for like...$80-90-100?
Looks like I can go to the Chabot Shoot n Que, so I'll bring meat and pistols.
I'm going to Big 5 tomorrow to take a look at M44 and M91/30.
What to look for? Condition, markings and such?
Hello fellow Barfers.
I finally decided that now is a great time for me to get my first rifle. I did some research, and found out that Ruger 10/22 is the best one for beginners. I was wondering where it would be the best place to get a used one as my budget is pretty low. Where do you guys get your guns(east bay) or would you recommend some other rifle? Thanks alot.

Well, if your budget is limited, it might not be such a great time!![]()
Your best bet is to keep checking Calguns.net and see if you can find one to buy from a private party. Maybe even try posting a Wanted ad. Other than that, try to find a small local shop that sells used guns and maybe has some in stock at a decent price.
Here's the calguns link for the private sales section:

Thanks for all of the tips guys. Building a custom rifle sounds fun, but might be too much for a beginner like me.
It's not that my budget is limited now. I just don't want to spend lots of money on just another hobby. Best price I found was ~$220 at local Big 5. I just thought since it's such a popular rifle, there should be many cheap used ones around.
I bought my 10/22 new from Wild Sports in Orangevale for 189.99, Federal ammo is on sale at Wal Mart 12.00 for a box of 550.$220 is about the best price you're going to find for a 10/22. I've seen used ones go for less, but you have to be extremely diligent on checking the for-sale section on calguns.
Yugoslavia had a limited manufacturing capacity, so everything they made had to be robust. Instead of the Russian-spec 2mm receiver walls, you get 3mm walls. The way they made the barrels was different, but I forget how..one way is to drill a round bar to create the barrel, the other way is to roll a sheet of steel to create the barrel. Zastava's way was said to be better. You could rapid-fire 60rds and grab the rifle by the barrel. Try that with a Romanian, Albanian, or some other rifle and you'd have a barrel stuck to your hand. So, better materials, better manufacturing process, no flimsy mass-produced feel.
I mean, you might go for the Russian SKS for historical or other reasons, and they're getting quite rare so I wouldn't blame you..but if you're just looking for the best rifle, the Yugo is your choice.
