Cheapests Yugos I found go for $250-275. Is that fair?
Other rifles I'm thinking about are M44 and M91/30. Cheap and should be a fun shoots.
Any sugestions? :thumbup

I sold my M44 to Raul here on Barf. Great rifle. Packed a huge punch, but for some reason, all my female friends loved shooting it! :laughing The Mosin Nagant line is pretty sweet, but if I could do it again, I'd go for the M38...same as the M44 but no side-folding bayonet. The bayonet complicates things. The 91/30 is also a great rifle, and the length makes it more accurate than the carbines. I'd go for that over the other two. Some were made in Tula, some in Izhevsk, both arsenals were great though, so no biggie.

$275 for a Yugo? You must be looking at some expensive retail places. Around $200 would be a pretty good deal..I'd suggest looking at Calguns.net in the sales subforum.

They Yugos have gone up since the supply has mostly dried up. Same thing with the Russians. I bought my Russian at a gun show in the mid nineties for $150. As an owner of both, the Russian is more nicely made and more comfortable to hold. The Yugo is more robust and stronger, but also has a bigger stock that isn't as pleasant to hold. But yeah, both those prices seem a bit high, just keep checking calguns for one for sale.

IIRC: City Arms in Pacifica has a couple in the $299-399 range. Couldn't tell you what area or date range of manufacture though. Wasn't looking for another SKS... :laughing

I was there today. They have two what I believe Norincos for I think $235 and two Russian for $425 and $550.

So I guess 91/30 for me.

The Chinese ones are such garbage.

Don't shy away from Big 5's sales of Mosin Nagants. They usually have nice 91/30s for like...$80-90-100?

I'm going to Big 5 tomorrow to take a look at M44 and M91/30.

What to look for? Condition, markings and such?

Wait a minute-- 'til 4? Maybe I _could_ get out in time to go do that, too. Be one hell of an appropriate birthday celebration! Especially considering that since we're in the second drought year in a row, I won't be making things explode to celebrate my birthday... I'd be cool if I had to miss the "cue", but got the "shoot"...

Original matching numbers (not electro-penciled/force-matched)
No cracks or deep gouges in the stock
No pitting in the barrel (bring a small flashlight, shine it from the bolt side while you look down the barrel from the other end. You're looking for small dark spots. Also, look to see if the rifling (grooves) are visible).
Other than that, just check to see that stuff that should move does move (sight adjustment, internal magazine release, bolt)

Hello fellow Barfers.
I finally decided that now is a great time for me to get my first rifle. I did some research, and found out that Ruger 10/22 is the best one for beginners. I was wondering where it would be the best place to get a used one as my budget is pretty low. Where do you guys get your guns(east bay) or would you recommend some other rifle? Thanks alot.

Well, if your budget is limited, it might not be such a great time! :twofinger :p Your best bet is to keep checking Calguns.net and see if you can find one to buy from a private party. Maybe even try posting a Wanted ad. Other than that, try to find a small local shop that sells used guns and maybe has some in stock at a decent price.

Here's the calguns link for the private sales section:

used 10/22's go for $200 or less seeing as brand new is around $225.

Or, go find a receiver for $90 and build up a Volquartsen special for yourself.

If you're going to buy a receiver and build something, go get an off-list lower reciever for an AR-15-style rifle from your local gun dealer, then build yourself a California-legal semi-automatic M4 or M16 clone :teeth

$100-150 for the reciever now
$400-??? for the rifle kit later (you can spend as much as you want!)

Thanks for all of the tips guys. Building a custom rifle sounds fun, but might be too much for a beginner like me.

It's not that my budget is limited now. I just don't want to spend lots of money on just another hobby. Best price I found was ~$220 at local Big 5. I just thought since it's such a popular rifle, there should be many cheap used ones around.

$220 is about the best price you're going to find for a 10/22. I've seen used ones go for less, but you have to be extremely diligent on checking the for-sale section on calguns.

Another inexpensive .22 to look into is the Marlin 60, or 795. I've had my Marlin for 13 years and it still shoots just as well as the day I bought it.

I bought my 10/22 new from Wild Sports in Orangevale for 189.99, Federal ammo is on sale at Wal Mart 12.00 for a box of 550.

Yugoslavia had a limited manufacturing capacity, so everything they made had to be robust. Instead of the Russian-spec 2mm receiver walls, you get 3mm walls. The way they made the barrels was different, but I forget how..one way is to drill a round bar to create the barrel, the other way is to roll a sheet of steel to create the barrel. Zastava's way was said to be better. You could rapid-fire 60rds and grab the rifle by the barrel. Try that with a Romanian, Albanian, or some other rifle and you'd have a barrel stuck to your hand. So, better materials, better manufacturing process, no flimsy mass-produced feel.

I mean, you might go for the Russian SKS for historical or other reasons, and they're getting quite rare so I wouldn't blame you..but if you're just looking for the best rifle, the Yugo is your choice.

I've never heard of rolling a seamed tube for a barrel.

That would be asking for a short life.
