BARF Militia

doh, happy bday ryan!

guns and ammo "should" be cheaper in OR right?? Anyone know any good places near Beaverton/Portland?

A buddy just got one, granted he has more guns than anyone I know but this one is pretty fun, you can shoot it just about anywhere, and shoot it a lot since .22 is super cheap.

I probably wouldn't buy it with my own $$ but hey, to each, his own. I just get to play with it for free.

BTW, I just found this thread. Good to see fellow firearm enthusiasts. I have a remington 700 in .308, and SA XD in .40, I'm on the lookout for a used SOCOM 16 or SOCOM II if any of you guys knows of anyone selling.

If this is a repost, just ignore.

Would you spend $500 plus on this .22 LR rifle?

I think my next handgun is gonna be a SIG, either the standard .45 or maybe their 1911 copy. Anyone shoot the Sig 1911 yet? I've already got a nice, well done Colt so I'm leaning towards the Sig design for thoroughness in my collection. But damn a German 1911...my inner Teutonic freak is salivating.:p

They also had a conceal/carry kimber with an aluminum frame that was REALLY nice. That'd be a nice upgrade from my current carry piece. Trackdays or guns? Why o why can't I just have both?

Haven't shot one, but thought about getting one. I like that they improved on the extractor, so it uses a beefy external extractor instead of the semi-fragile internal thing that has to be tuned just right.

But, I kinda don't like 1911s because they don't fit my hand all that well, and reassembly is kind of a pain. But if I can find a Sig on the used market and it has a conventional barrel bushing and half-length guide rod, I'm getting it.

Do they even make one with a conventional guide rod and barrel bushing? I'll have to hit their website and check.

edit: Sweet! Downloaded their 1911 owner's manual, and all their 1911s use classic barrel bushings and guide rods - no full length guide rods or bull barrels to be found! Now I just have to see if they have smooth trigger faces, or if they are serrated with a little hole to adjust overtravel. If smooth without the hole, I'm gettin' one!

Pop quiz folks..

I can get a good deal on a Ruger 10/22 Or a Remington 597 .22. It will be for plinking mostly.

Does either one have significant draw backs, that would make the other a better choice in the long run?

In the long run, I would more then likely change out the stock, and perhaps a bull barrel. But it'll probably stay stock for a long time.

If you want to costomise it, Ruger is what you need.

Visit www.rimfirecentral.com.

Oddly enough I was looking there. What my take was The marlin 60 is a 50/50. Tack driver out of the box, plagued with horrible triggers. :wtf

Ruger 10/22 = great out of the box, not as accurate, plethora of parts.

Not much was said about the remington 597 though.

There is a ton of great info on that site and lots of very knowledgeable 10/22 nuts.

fwiw I really like my Ruger and is practically all I can afford to shoot these days. :laughing

Anyone going to the USI membership meeting this week? I missed the meeting last month but plan on going to join on Thursday evening.

The 597 should be more accurate out of the box than the Ruger, too. Plus, it's a full-size gun with better stock sights than the Ruger.

When the 597 first came out, they had sucky magazines, but Remington's fixed that. The aftermarket started kicking in for the 597 a few years ago, with the most common upgrades being the hammer (which improves the trigger pull) and extractor. Both are easy swaps.

If you're swapping the 10/22's barrel with a bull, then stock sights don't matter since they're attached to the barrel, and you'll have to add a scope.

But on the other hand, if the rifle is already accurate, there's no point in a bull barrel except for the cool factor and added weight to kill recoil.

IMHO, the 10/22 is expensive for what you get, doubly so if you're going to throw away half the rifle to buy even more expensive replacement parts. But then, the gun bug is impossible to resist (unless you're Mike T :twofinger ) and you gotta do what you gotta do.

On the other hand, the Model 60 comes with a built-in high-cap mag, which you can't get for the other two in CA.

My dad has Marlin 60. Almost as accurate as my Marlin 925R.:teeth
Trigger on 60 does SUCK ASS!! On 925R I just replaced return spring with one from ball pen.:) Works WAY better. You need to make some investments to make 10/22 as accurate as Marlins come out of the box.

Yeah see this is what I keep hearing over and over. The 10/22 is an easy mod gun, but a tad bit $$ wise to get accurate (parts wise).

Where are the marlins are tack drivers with shitty triggers.

Ya know, screw it.. 597 it is. I can deal with a crappy trigger. I mean hell, trigger jobs are simple enough.

The Marlin 60 is the tube fed semi? I've got one and it is indeed a tack driver. It just needs better sights than the ramped buckhorn iron sights on it. I put a match peep sight on it but it requires a different front sight. The trigger isn't bad. It's a chintzy feeling gun but it shoots.

For someone used to speed-reloading magazines, that tubular magazine with the rod is no fun.

You guys will want to get there by 7 PM to fill out the little info card and stand in line. There were at least 40 new members last month, and they say that's the norm! And if you're NRA members, BRING YOUR CARD! You'll get $5 off :)

Oh, and be prepared to squeal like a pig. Lots of good 'ol boys in there. :rofl

What building do we go to for the meeting? Is it up by the trap range?

Yes, right across the road from it, on your left. Sounds like you know where it is, but if not, just keep going passed the public range until you see the building on the left, and all of the cars and trucks in the parking lot. Lots of trucks... :laughing

I'll take muh pick 'um up truck so I don't stand out like a city boy. :laughing

So, I want to do a day trip to someplace where we can shoot at stuff other than paper. Lisa has never shot anything but paper. I want to see her reaction when the shit she hits actually moves or blows to pieces when she hits it with a shotgun blast.

Any recommendations? When I was younger we used to go out in the hills between livermore and altamont but I think its all fenced in and/or developed these days.
