day z is like left 4 dead with way more open space?

Never played L4D. But the "map" in DayZ is fucking super massive.

The kind of run it takes to get from US deployment to RU deployment on Firestorm in BF3? That's about the distance between towns in DayZ. If you wanted to run across the map, just lay a paper weight on the W key and come back in 20 minutes and you might be close.

If you can survive long enough, there's vehicle parts around and you can get a vehicle fixed up and running so you can get around, and load up with loot.

just started playing dayz with a friend yesterday. really liking it, fun to play with others. i havent been sniped yet though...

the objective is... its an open world FPS, almost like an MMO. there's no matches or rounds or real objectives, just sort of survive. explore and find better gear and dont die

Yeah 10,000 draw distance is absurd. I suppose if you played ArmaII and were up in the air with a plane that might be worth using...assuming it didn't drop you down to 5fps that is.

Goddamnit - this sounds fun but my video card sucks donkey balls....:nchantr

Yeah. It's a free mod for a 2 year old game that was practically free. But if you want to play it as it was meant to be seen you need to drop almost $600 on a new GeForce GTX 680.

And yes I thought about and looked at video cards just because of this fucking game.

1920x1080, very high detail, and max draw distance? What's your FPS?

If you can do over 30 with that card I'd be willing to slot that in my PC. $270 i can live with. But $600 for the latest video card is just not acceptable to me. Whether I get any use out it for DayZ before i get super pissed at it and uninstall it, I'm sure I'll be needing some more GPU muscle pretty soon for Counterstrike:GO when that comes out anyways.

What card are you using now? And what size monitor?

Actually had to look at the sticker (never peeled off) on the side of the tower.

ATI Radeon 4650 1gb VRAM

Which is the OEM card for the Gateway PC I have. But I'm rocking a 27" Samsung monitor that the XBox also outputs to. Yeah, yeah...I know that card could be a lot better. Just about any OEM card that isn't in a $2k+ Alienware is probably not great. But runs Counterstrike Source with everything maxed out just fine. And I don't consider ArmaII/DayZ much better looking of a game than CS.

The benchmark scores are just that; they're scores. It doesn't truly represent how well it'll perform in gaming, but it paints a good generalization of what you're looking at.

What you're using:
HD 4650
Benchmark: 463

BrassPremier has a sweet GPU.

GTX 570:
Benchmark: 3630 @ $240

Mid-Range GPUs:
I'm currently using the Radeon HD 6870 and can also run BF3 in max settings with smooth FPS.

HD 6870:
Benchmark: 2830 @ $140

HD 6850:
Benchmark: 2750 @ $120

You can kind of get a rough idea why your graphics are struggling to keep up.

There's a lot of affordable options that will allow you to play all the new games. You can also crossfire/sli these gpus for a little more umph.

Since you're using a 27" monitor, you might want to look into 2GB RAM versions. The max capacity for 1GB is generally around 24".

Last side note. Just because the graphics suck doesn't mean it won't use large amounts of resources. Poorly written code with shit graphics can use as many resources as graphically intensive, well written programs.

Wow. Lots of good info there. Many thanks.

Been a few years since I've really paid attention to PC geek stuff. I know if I was really serious, I would've built my own instead of just going down the Best Buy and just pointing at an $800 one and telling the guy "uhhh that one."

So yeah. Apparently my video card is awful. I guess I should upgrade. Time for a trip to le Frys.

Now...am I gonna still be handicapped because the CPU isn't state of the art? It's an AMD Phenom quad core. I wanna say 2.8GHz. Maybe it was 2.5....forgot. And it's got 8GB of ram.

yea i only look up pc gear when im upgrading/building new pc, i never stay up to date. when i got my card, the gtx 580 was the shit, and the 570 i got was like $200 cheaper for nearly the same performance, works for me.

before you go out and buy a new sweet card make sure your comp can fit it. mine is pretty damn long. it also is tall, it takes up two slot spaces on motherboard (the pci-e spot it plugs in, and hangs over space below it). it also requires two pci-e 6? pin plugs.

It should fit. It's a full size tower case. Not too sure of the power supply though. I'm sure whatever video card I get is probably gonna suck down way more wattage than what I've got going on now.

What watt is your PSU now? I'm running HD6870 with i7-2600k on a 650watt fanless PSU. Temperature has been good and power has been sufficient; though, it won't have enough juice if I wanted to crossfire/sli my graphics card.

In regards to your CPU, I think you'll be fine. I remember reading an article maybe half a year or so ago comparing mid-range CPUs and high-end CPUs in gaming aspects only. From what I recall, the improvements between the CPUs were insignificant. I'll have to look around for the article.

Not sure what the wattage is. I'll have to look at the back of the case when I get home.

Last thing I wanna do is buy a new video card that requires a new power supply. Then I'll want a new HD, then a new....something. Next thing I know I should have just bought a turnkey Alienware.
