I have a 50-pair jar of the CVS earplugs. They are an awesome value. However I don't think they really protect my ears well enough. ~30 dB reduction isn't cutting it. My tinnitus is KILLING ME. I'm not ready yet to get the really expensive ones that are molded to your ears but I need something that does a lot better than ~30dB reduction. More like 50.

What kinda earplugs would you guys recommend?

Custom-molded earplugs.

I may have to suck it up and buy some. They're expensive, but necessary it seems until they finally fucking figure out how to treat tinnitus.

In the interim until I suddenly become a gazillionaire I'm looking for earplugs that might be slightly more expensive but better than your bargain brand. I have found the CVS ones to be almost identical to Hearos.

Your hearing is worth saving. My tinnitus got worse thanks to the Multi's shitty stock windscreen.

And yes I wear plugs, have done so since the late 80's when I started riding. :ride

I hear just fine, including sounds that don't exist :p

Tell me about custom molded ones. You have my attention.

Definite difference between these and the lower rated ones. As for custom molded, I'm curious if and how they could be better since the foam ones expand to fit.

Those have a noise reduction rating of 33. The CVS ones say they have a NRR of 32. Are they making that up? Or are these supposed to be way better despite only having 1 more decibel of protection?

These Howard Leight Super Leight work GREAT. I can use the same pair for about 2 weeks before they start loosing their effectiveness. Make sure you know how to put them in correctly for full effect.

And not all 33 dB rated earplugs are the same. I have a box (200 pairs) Moldex Pura-Fit earlugs that are also rated 33 dB, but they don't work nearly as well as the Super Leight earplugs.

remember, a decibel is an order of magnitude. So 1 decibel difference is 10 times difference on a linear scale.

Don't just go by the NRR rating. How well the fit is will play into how effective each model is to an individual. If you can buy a kit that has assorted models and try and find the one that works for you before ordering a big pack. http://www.earplugstore.com/unfoamtrialp.html?_s_icmp=HOMEBAR1_TRIAL_PACKS

I used Howard Leights earmuffs and plugs for shooting. Even there, there are different qualities.

BTW, I also use earplugs and muffs at the same time. If you accidentally lift your muff, like if you scratch, the plugs will still keep you protected.

And why the hell not?

Anyone know of some earmuffs I can wear under my helmet? I would totally do it... my new gixxer is kinda loud. Not cop-magnet loud but still enough to rattle my ear bonez.

As for the Super Leights, I think I'll give them a try. :thumbup

You'll need a helmet 20 sizes larger to wear earmuffs under, and if you crashed you'll wish that you weren't wearing earmuffs under the helmet.

can i ask what helmet your using?

It's actually a factor of 10 difference in sound power for each increment (or decrement) 10 in decibel rating. Add 10 dB and the power is 10 times more. Add 20 db and the power is 100 more (10x10). Add 30 db and its 1000 more (10x10x10). For every 3 db the sound power changes by roughly a factor of 2.

Everyones ears are different, I like the EAR Classics they work for me.

DIY custom ear plugs. I have no idea if these are any good or not but less than $20.00

hey bro, try Vmoda:thumbup they look like headphone earbuds, with a cord keeping them together. they keep enough of the outside world out with the added bonus of not shutting everything out, so you can still hear pretty good with them in! they come with three extra adapters for various ear hole sizes.

they were/are mainly for musicians but i bought them cause i got tired of constantly rolling up the disposable ones and i am quite happy with the ones i got:) i forget the specific model name but, they look like in-ear buds similar to Skull candy stuff you see everywhere like Bestbuy and Target.

Sweet, I'll check those out. I'm more interested in blocking absolutely everything out though. Like complete silence almost. Wind and bike noise have become the bane of my existence.
