Better Earplugs?

if you are wearing NRR32 and are having problems then you need to ones that fit your ear. custom, different size (if available)

This might just be a Nigel Tufnel moment, but here's a set of plugs claiming 34db attenuation.:

'Mighty plugs'

I need to find a more comfortable pair. I rode around all day today and the earplugs I was wearing (cheapo CVS ones) offered decent protection but in the end felt like my eardrums were being stabbed with ice picks.

Gonna see if I can get some Super Leights in the future but idk if they will stop that kind of pain from happening.

Too Far in?

Too Far in?

That's the only way I can get them to properly dampen the sound. I did put them too far in at first but adjusted them later. It was only after a couple hours that they started becoming uncomfortable.

Also I have found out the chin mount I put my GoPro on is causing a large amount of wind buffeting which is what creates most of the noise. I have to take it off lest my tinnitus get louder yet.

I've gone through many varieties, and so far the Hearos "soft" disposables are some of the best I've used: http://www.amazon.com/Hearos-Ultimate-Softness-Earplugs-20-Pair/dp/B001EPQ3H4

I can't imagine anyone getting discomfort from these, though if you try *really* hard you can roll them tight enough that you insert them too deep to pull out by hand (bring tweezers or pliers with you on a long trip).

A pair will last 4-5 days of commuting, and while they're annoying towards the end of their life they work so damn well when fresh I can't see going back to standard reusables.

Maybe you aren't getting the 30 dB reduction out of yours (I don't think I was out of my previous reusables, compared to these), but if ~30 isn't enough, I'm not sure what else to recommend.

Had the same issue. Got those brown CVS plugs and they are utter shit. Brings lots of pain to your eardrums.

Picked up some Super Leights from CVS yesterday, it's better.

My issue is that the earplugs pop out or get uncomfortable due to pressure changes when riding up to the mountains... which I do every day.

Glad to hear OP got it sorted. I was gonna go with "technique" too, but I see someone beat me to it.

There's nothing better than the feeling of getting the earplug way in there.. mmm, touching brain.

I forgot about that Sugru stuff. It looks pretty neat. Would be good for making small changes to switchgear or the like to make it more ergonomic.

Abyss, it could be you have a narrower than avg ear canal. You know, like having short fingers or a long nose? Maybe you need to customize your earplugs, cutting off a tiny bit or something. Have you tried those in-ear silicon earbuds? They come in different sizes.

Polyurethane ones fit me well (now that I know how to properly insert them). Now it's just a matter of effectiveness at noise reduction and comfort. Will probably try to pick up some better ones when I can.

FWIW I bought the custom ones at a MC show and while they are molded correctly, they are hard rubber so they create pressure points in the helmet for long rides and they get dirty. My ears were sore I realized that in a crash they would transmit a lot of impact to my inner ear bone. I stopped wearing them.

I bought a box of green Howard Leights soft plugs for about $20 from their website and have used them for years of trackdays and MotoGP races. I wet them and give them a quarter twist as I insert them. They do not cause any soreness even during 12 hour riding days. Give them a try!
