bike cutting out while riding...

You can go to ACE or home despot and they should have a bolt thread thingy to determine the proper size and thread pitch. The only thing to be carefull when using the tap is to make sure the tap stays centered. The bad thread can force the tap off center and make a mess of things, but I think you got it. Good luck with it.

thanks:thumbup like i said, i been to Lowe's alot recently. they have one of those bolt size/pitch things on the shelf above all their drawers full of things my daughters can't keep their hands out of:laughing and the thread pitch is m6x1.0, a tad smaller than i thought.

got a smaller tap set from sears, gonna watch some YT videos to get a feel for it.

quick question...since the only part of the thread that is damaged is the very top, do i need to cut the entire depth of the hole? can i just do the upper, damaged portion only and be done?

Be careful not to double tap.

Can you file away and chamfer the damaged part on the very top?

i wouldn't know where to start with a file.

and by chamfer, you mean eliminate the upper portion of thread by drilling it out with a slightly larger bit? sorry, i need to know cause i don't know squat and had to look up chamfer before i replied.

He means go in there with a small file and remove some of the damaged thread material so it doens't force the tap off center and you start cutting new threads instead of chasing the old ones. Get a small round file or use a rotary file on a dremel. There is a tool called a "back tap" which you put into the hole and can reverse chase the threads, it is for stuff like spark plugs where making a mess of threads sucks bad. I think you have this one beat though, at least on the run seeking cover.

Update please. The thought of a broken down bike the I sold is hurting me.
BK

not broken down at all:thumbup I chased the thread just now and....voila:

the bolt threaded right into place:party *pumps fist*

got it back together and put the plastics back on. took it out front to start and...it works!

hey i didn't break it:thumbup

it was smokin a bit when i got it started. i saw no other signs of fubar so i took off down the block. i get to the light at the end and no more smoke. i take off up the hill towards portola and then to market. my bike must be homophobic cause it stalled 2 blocks shy of castro:laughing same fuckin symptoms that started this thread:mad

anyways...about to go back into the garage in a bit and check the spark plug. good thing i bought more than one.

I had a feeling I was going to read this. Sorry. Same symptoms as my cdi problems back in the day. Might run for 10 days or 10 minutes. Start right back up sometimes, other times kick it for an hour. Sometimes just wont start at all then you come back the next day and it fires up on the first kick. There has to be someone that will let you do a cdi swap for a couple days.

well, I went out and checked the plug. it is fine. I went and walked a block to the gas station and filled my jug. there was less gas than I thought:facepalm but, I have made it to work with the same amount of gas:dunno I filled up the tank to full with the jug and went for a ride around the neighborhood. cruising or actin a fool, the bike was just as it was before that damn bolt came out:ride idle is solid and it ran fine.

next time, I am going to switch over the petcock first, I promise:laughing

also this: :facepalm:facepalm

notice anything???

yeah, i'm a dumbass:mad I put everything back on and torqued 'em all up and completely forgot to tighten these two little fuckers:mad:mad:mad:mad

I found a band aid for my missing brass...:teeth threaded in there nice and tight!

did a quick test ride and they aint goin anywhere...until I unscrew them at least:teeth

as if the above wasn't enough, i also noticed this on my test ride this morning...

anyone know of a cheap welder?

I think those brass screws are just access plugs for using a slide hammer to pull the rocker shafts out of the cover. I don't remember if oil can get out of there.

oil can get out...ask me how i know:laughing

i wiped up the little that had leaked out and plugged it with these tightly rolled up paper towels. i will be ordering these today...

Brandon, I think he is right. Its most likely electrical. Sorry man. Talk to Dan at Motoxotica. He will know whats available or whats an alternative like this from ebay. Stator,CDI, igniter, or pulse generator.

No need to order them, go down to your local hardware store and bye them. Just run of the mill metric bolts will do. Probably the same 6 x 1mm bolt just way shorter.
