Brake checking - why?

FYI, while I won't brake check in any circumstance, my favorite thing to do is to pass bad drivers, then merge in front of them with my hitch rack full of bikes.

Ultimately, it is a bluff since my bikes will be worth more than some cars, but I think bad drivers recognize that I don't need to accommodate them and my car won't even be touched.

You're making a bunch of assumptions about me that aren't true.

I understand about merging, what you're failing to understand is that in the Bay area there are too many opportunists for reasonable merging to take place.

Same thing with roundabouts, which we had many in New England, and because they have much better and more courteous drivers around there, even if they are more aggressive, they work out very well.

I see roundabouts as ending up as disasters around here, too many assholes/opportunists who would take the 'me first/fuck the rest of you' approach to them.

Opportunists- or drivers who see an empty lane and want to keep traffic flowing? Continuing to the merge point does not make one an opportunist.
As an "opportunist," the only a-holes I really see are those who tailgate as to not let "opportunists" in at the merge point. You one of those?

How are you educating me?

Courtesy is necessary for good traffic flow. Lack of courtesy results in far more traffic jams. I've seen this in practice for decades.

I don't know WTF you're educating me on, it's really quite simple and absolute.

Courtesy = Flow (Per Climber, yes, only one relative factor, but you deem it necessary)
Lack of Courtesy = Lack of Flow (By engineering math, is this a true statement? Per 250mL, not the only factor, but a reasonable contributor per Climber)
Lack of Courtesy = More traffic jams (Per Climber)
Lack of Flow = More traffic jams (Can this mathematical-like substitution be made?)
Flow = Less traffic jams (Again, just relatively speaking)

So as I wrote earlier:
You [Climber] make an argument for needing time to react to situations without fear of being rear ended. The need for reaction time is largely due to changes in flow of traffic. If everyone flowed...that's slow drivers in the slow lane, medium in the middle lane, and fast in the fast lane, there would be little to react to. Wrong vehicle speeds in the intended lanes, that's unexpected, that requires reaction, that's the hazard.

Opportunists are those who jump over into the breakdown lane and use it for travel, I agree with you. But to label someone who follows the painted lines on the road as such does not make sense. As for emergency cones, yes a little courtesy goes a long way to give emergency responders and those affected a little more breathing room, but [insert whatever fraction] of a mile leeway is disrupting flow.

Not sure if this thread is going to “take it easy” , or going to “Take it to the limit”
:wtf
But I guess it is just the usual kind of thread on Barf. :laughing

Just to clarify- Nobody should be driving on the shoulder unless it's Highway 37 between Vallejo and Sears Point.

Which of these two truck drivers is more attentive than the other?

Within 50 feet for you to recognize stopped/slow traffic? You seem to harbor some level of guilt (commendable, :thumbup), but only because you saddled another driver with taking the rearender, but not because you share some level of fault for not being more attentive to the road conditions. It is true, I have no idea what Hwy 237 is like, but in general...

It wasn’t an emergency lane change maneuver. I saw the traffic coming to a stop hundreds of feet before. I just changed lanes at almost the last possible moment. So I’m not inattentive...I’m was just a vindictive dick in that situation. Which is why I feel bad about using the stopped car to fuck over the tailgater.

I worry because my cars stop better than pretty much any eco box or suv on the planet. I know most people don't give a shit about their cars and that is the big problem with me. I don't mind performance cars as much as I do a dirty Tahoe because they can stop quick and usually care about the art of driving and are not using it for A-B life. I did brake check an Explorer or some type of SUV when they were riding my ass and texting and randomly swerving into the next lane and back. I hit the brakes while in 3rd gear in case I had to out run the tank and I see her look up, drop the phone grab the wheel with 2 hands and swerve as she ran off into the median in a cloud of glorious tire smoke. I have to admit it felt pretty good. Fuck em, I'm petty I guess.

Another example of how biased it is, is that nobody brake-checks me (or "lets off the gas" :rolleyes) when I'm in my truck, yet they do it when I'm in my BMW......even though I drive the same way in both.

It's nice that people realize it's a bad idea to brake check someone whose brakes are worse than theirs.

Nah, I think it's more about jealousy, or the false perception that BMW drivers are more dickish and therefore "deserve" to be blocked/checked etc.

Fuckin-a right they do!!!

Lol
I’m finding Audi drivers have become the “Ultimate Doosh Driving Machine as of late.

In my experience, male pickup drivers are the most dickish

yeah I'd agree on that
It's even been posted on the forum before

Is there a category for male pickup drivers who also have a BMW, though? :D

I think I got brake checked today. I saw some stop lights on the SUV in front of me in lane 2. Why? oh.. lane 3 was completely empty. I passed her... then what do I see as I pass??? A guy looking down towards his crotch, erm, his phone... and 8 car-lengthts empty in front of him!!!!! :wtf

That Spyhunter reference probably was the highpoint of this thread.

Then there's the temporary tailgater that rushes up your ass when you change lanes in front of them or merge in front of them. And although they have plenty of time to react and slow for that couple of seconds you've inconvenienced them they will make it look as though they don't. The goal for them is to get as close to your bumper before they touch the brake.
