Chromebook or Windows?

So as luck would have it, my cheap ass chromebook came back to life. I'll nurse this POS until it's time to buy a new one.
 
I just want to know why you're always fighting with computers. Is this a porn and/or fluid issue?

Apple clearly states they will support each iteration of hardware they sell through software development for six years. After that, that device is DOA and only deemed to receive security software updates.

The Windows laptop I use for taxes/banking doesn’t get any other use beyond just that. No web surfing, no YouTube, no nothing. I check for updates everytime before logging into those accounts.
Might be overly cautious but I ain’t an IT guy and ain’t up to date on the latest trendy viruses.

For random web surfing I use an iPad however I also have a Surface for the same purpose simply because it has a kick out stand so I don’t have to hold the damn thing in my hand. If it wasn’t for the stand I probably would have tossed it.

For watching YouTube it’s the Surface, for reading it’s the iPad.
They make machines for every purpose.

Checking every login for something you only use occasionally is a good idea. :thumbup

For most Ipads you can get a case that does the nifty stand thing that the Surface does, though usually, not as well.

I have:
work laptop, Dell XPS.
Home laptop, Asus ROG Zephyrus.
HTPC (currently broken because I made the mistake of trusting Asrock) that I built.
Gaming Desktop I also built which TBH is really old at this point.
Travel toy, Ipad Air (yea, apple, but the battery life is amazing and it travels well.)
 
Don't buy refurbished electronics. Doesn't matter if they call them " factory refurbished".

"If we send that junk out again, maybe it won't get returned as defective this time."

It's common for defective stuff to pass testing before it was originally sold, and to pass the same testing after it's returned as defective, so no repair is done. The only change to it when it's sold as refurbished is a shorter warranty.

I work in information security, and Chromebook is going to be the easier, preferable option over Windows for the vast majority of users and their needs. Almost everything is in the cloud these days, so being beholden to the browser is not a big deal. There isn't the same persistence in the system, so malware is much, much trickier. Most password managers now have a ChromeOS option, so you can easily use one of those.

If you aren't gaming, doing photo/video editing, doing engineering work, or working with really large files that NEED to be stored locally, you are not getting any notable benefit by picking Windows over ChromeOS. You'll be more secure, and have a more performant machine for less money, with a Chromebook. You still need to be conscientious of what sites you access and any Chrome extensions you install, but that's going to be the case on literally any internet-connected device ever.

My dad switched to a Chromebook a year or two ago (mostly just posts on car forums, airplane forums, watches YouTube about cars and airplanes, etc, etc, and emails me links to car and airplane YouTubes) and he's been really happy with it. It requires incredibly little tech savvy or keeping up with things to use, so if you aren't a person who is excited about new tech and mucking with computers, it's a solid choice.

Don't make that a blanket statement. Apple refurb is the best there is. Sometimes people just return an Apple product for any number of reasons within that 14-day window Apple allows when ordered directly from Apple or from the Apple store.

I owned a 2002 IS300. Since it was built in Japan, it was a better built car. And those plastics were decent for a $30k car at the time.
 
If you decide not to buy a MacBook, costco has some good deals on chromebooks. I got one early last year with a touch screen and back lit keyboard and it's great for what I need. I use my windows notebook for work because it has a bigger screen but my Chromebook would probably be fine if I hooked it up to a monitor.

Yeah. With a solid 2JZ engine that can take 400hp with stock internals. :teeth

It was a fun car to drive and own. Did several HPDE events (Sears Point and Thunderhill) and autocross with it as well. Good times.

Oh please, don't make me dig up the legions of articles about abandoned Android devices.

We have an "abandoned" ipad that works fine.

My phone is destined to be obsoleted this year with iOS 17. My phone is simply running out of space (cat photos, they add up...). So I was planning on upgrading it anyway (at this point I may as well wait for whatever marvel they plan on announcing in September). But I can't complain about it not being able to run iOS 17 when I haven't even bothered to update it to iOS 16.

While I agree the tech is plateauing, continually pushing the base line of performance for the OS lifts all boats in the ecosystem. I'll get 6 years out of this phone. I got 3 years out of the one before that, so this is better. That's an eternity for modern personal electronics, especially in this space.

Blanket statement? It's a guideline and IMO a good one.

And my experience with Apple wasn't good. If they're truly the best there is, I stand by that guideline even more.
