Pinehurst is my favorite nearby road for playing. Lots to do. Good fun. :thumbup

It's a familiar story, it seems. Out for an little romp after work. Cruised up Wildcat, then up to Grizzly Peak and past the wall. Continued on Skyline, then down towards Canyon to ride Pinehurst towards Redwood. It was a beautiful evening, climbing up the hill out of the canyon towards where it gets fairly tight.

I ride goat trails a lot, and while Pinehurst is tight in places, it's no goat trail. It's got a centerline, and for the most part the pavement is passable. Still, it has a fair number of blind right handers, and one lesson I've learned from the goat trails is to assume that there can be something ugly coming around them. My habit is to set up to the right, and to hug the right all the way through the turn, even though it does not provide the best line of sight.

Climbing up the hill at a spirited pace, I flicked it into one of these blind rights. At about 1/3rd of the way through a red Miata with the top down and a young guy behind the wheel appears coming the other way with both of his inside wheels on my side of the yellow line.

First thought, "Shit! :wow"

Second thought, "Good thing I'm way over to the right."

About the time that second thought was forming, what should appear but a silver 350Z trying to pass the Miata on the inside! Oh fuck yes, this shithead is trying to go inside of a car that is already in my lane in a turn that was a blind left for both of them. :mad

Aim for the gap - maybe a foot wide path of pavement - and roll on the throttle. Reflex. No contact.

To be clear, had I been cleanly in the center of my lane, it would have been a head-on collision. Had I late apexed by running out close to the yellow line before turning in to improve my view of the turn, it would likely have been a head-on collision. Had I been upright rather than leaned over, my bars would have contacted the car. It was close.

I've been riding motos more than 40 years, and I've had an M1 for nearly 33 years. Close calls are uncommon for me. I haven't had a true close call since a cager hit me in the maze a couple of years ago. This was fucking close.

What's next was stupid. I chased him and caught him in traffic. I tried to get him to pull over, but he appeared to ignore me, but then again, he was talking on the phone when I came up behind him. What would I have done if he'd pulled over? Probably gotten my butt kicked. Not smart. Neither was he. The dope was clearly running laps on Pinehurst. When I decided it was fruitless to mess with him, I headed into Moraga where I found a LEO doing speed enforcement, and notified him of my experience. To my pleasant surprise, after giving him the details, the LEO headed out to look for the cager. I doubt if he found him, but I sure appreciate the effort. :thumbup

If you've read this far, what do you get out of this?

  1. Beware of a silver 350Z with the California plate "DIVINE Z". He nearly killed me. Don't let him kill you.
  2. On blind rights, expect the worst, including some stupid bubba in your lane. Choose your line and speed accordingly.

There, had to get that off my chest. /rant breathe yeah, yeah, yeah M4fuckingM. :twofinger

Ride safe. :ride

Thanks, Nick. A powerful reminder.

Is it still worth filing a police report on that pile of excrement? That guy needs to lose his license pronto.

I need to ask the LEO's. He's going to take out someone.

Dam that was a quick find Alex.

I've seen those guys separately on Pinehurst and Redwood a few times but never had an issue. Thanks for the heads up, I'll watch more carefully for them.

Pics of the car. The wheels and the lights are pretty distinctive. Was this him?

That fucker lives in Hayward, Kurt. How about contacting HPD? They have motors too who might take an interest in him and his car.

Glad you made it out alive and in one piece.

So you made a quick U-turn on narrow Pinehurst? And caught up to him?

I knew you had mad skillz on your HM. :cool

EDIT: Also with this guy's info you might consider contacting the local CHP office (Oakland or Castro Valley) and the sheriff's office of CoCo and Alameda counties. Might mean more cops on Pinehurst and Redwood and less fun for riders. But doing so might also save a rider from injury.

i know this guy... him and his crew or whatever run those roads at night mostly but they also go during the day sometimes and this is exactly what scares me. I do not wanna be flying around the corner on the bike when hes there crossing the dy around a blind corner. i'll get word out to him about this.
btw, i just know him. hes not a friend or anything. he actually probably doesn't like me at all. hahaha

That's the one. Also that decal in the upper left hand corner of the back window. Same car.

Some people simply need to die. Anyone who's willing to risk killing other people to win a dick waving contest is a waste of space on the planet.

Thanks, Yvonne. If you'd seen the u-turn you would not have been impressed. :laughing The only reason I caught the guy is because he was running laps, and he turned back around instead of going to Moraga or Canyon, then he got caught in traffic. On a clear road he was going faster than I was willing to go, even with a load of adrenalin.

I will contact the CHP and local LEOs about it. I don't know if they can do anything other than increase their presence, but that might dampen his antics for a while. Alex, thanks for the quick detective work. :thumbup

I was riding on Grizly Peak, chasing after Jdubeau, when a fuckwad in an Audi A6 came 2-4 feet into my lane in the apex of a blind downhill left-hander. I was at full lean, in the inside half of the lane and I swear I could feel the wind from the car it was so close to my shoulder. I never realized how committed and devoid of options you are until you can straighten the bike. Of he - or I - had been a foot or two over, I would have probably been killed, as closing speeds were probably between 45-70 mph. (Me going about 30 and him coming uphill probably faster)

I've blown the DY, but not in the apex, and not in a blind turn. I think guys in expensive cars have a sense of entitlement I don't encounter often among motorcyclists.

This sounds like a job for 1Rider!

"Touge" is Japanese for "driving like an ass on a narrow mountain road".

And the internet to the rescue, yet again - good find Alex. Judging from the guys writing style (or complete lack thereof), I'd imagine simply PMing him on a forum isn't going to get you anywhere worthwhile.

However, contacting the police may. First, glad to hear you're OK Kurt, that's some really scary stuff. As far as the police go, like you said, sounds like this guy was clearly running laps on a public road. You got his plate, and moreover have a forum where homeboy is discussing illegal high-speed driving on public roads - I'd guess this isn't the first time this chucklehead has put someone's life in danger. I definitely think this is worth talking to them about - this isn't just a freak occurance. Kids get busted all the time for posting underage drinking pictures on the internet, why not this clown?

Hell, if someone REALLY wanted to, they could pose as a member on the 350z forums and set up a time for a "Togue" when they knew an officer was going to be in the area...just a thought :teeth
