Do you really need deodorant? Experts weigh in
But your decision is most likely based more on personal and cultural preferences than any potential medical necessity, dermatology experts say.

“People have strong preferences and sensitivities to smell. People, from the beginning of time, have used perfumes (or) colognes to mask odor,” said Dr. Nina Botto, an associate professor of dermatology at the University of California, San Francisco. “But it’s not like flossing your teeth, where there’s data that you’re actually going to live longer if you floss your teeth regularly.”

“We live in a society where body odor is not universally accepted, making deodorant a part of your daily hygiene routine,” said Dr. Joshua Zeichner, an associate professor of dermatology at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City, via email. “There’s also a stigma surrounding wetness of the clothes because of sweat, which has pushed antiperspirants into daily skincare routines.”

Deodorants neutralize body odor, while antiperspirants reduce wetness on the skin, Zeichner added. Both are often offered in one product.
Anybody who was in my college chemistry class where a guy from France stunk so bad that you couldn't concentrate on the class if you were within 15 feet of him. He STUNK so bad that your eyes would water, your nose hated you and your brain just lost the ability to concentrate.

I've run across plenty of others, over the years who absolutely should have used deoderant.

I disagree 100% that it's 'only cultural'. Simply put, don't stink if you're going out in public and stink may be something that you aren't aware of.

What are other people's thoughts?

Once the word "need" is in there, it's an easy one to answer. Even things we need, we don't actually need. Needs only exist relative to some specific goal and that goal must be known before a need can be determined. Anyway, if the goal is to not be stinky, yes, I need deodorant.

I haven't wore deodorant since like my mid 20s

I shower daily, and do not use cologne or hand spray airisers or anything like that.

Basically since I stopped doing crazy sports, I didn't have to use deodorant, riding track - sweaty as balls but I always have undersuit on and wash my leather liner annually

I use one of those salt licks for your pits, works well enough but it isn't an antiperspirant which is definitely bad for you, nor does it have any questionable chemicals in it.

I too have known people who definitely could benefit from deodorant but don't use any for whatever reason.

Body hair does a lot to help your body hang onto its natural funk. If you shave your armpit hair, you'll find yourself needing deoderant a lot less.

Obviously depends who you ask.
If you’re answering of course you don’t need deodorant.
If the person working close to you is asked of course they think you need deodorant.

Worked with two people in particular who stank so bad you could almost see the trail they left behind. It hung in the air and you’d know the path they took through the office.
No way they couldn’t have known how bad they smelled, or even cared.

I rarely ever wear deodorant

We stink. Yum. Suck it up..

Yes.

The answer is yes.

You all stink. I stink. Everybody stinks. Maybe you will find a few people that like your stink, but most people don't want to smell it.

We live in a society, the go out in public requirement is to have showered within a day or so with soap and shampoo, wear deodorant, and if it's a particularly public spot in close proximity of others, a very light cologne or perfume. Get with the program, people.

My friend’s bro & SIL are so stinky that he made them shower at his place once. When they came out still stinking it became apparent that their clothes were a big part of the issue. If a person bathes well and wears clean clothes, then there should be no need for stinky cologne or perfume to cover up (patchouli is the deodorizer of the unwashed hippie). Deodorant is needed by some, esp the junk eaters and heavyset. Of course I don’t stink. :teeth

+1

Also, scrub away the bacteria on your pits and eat clean food.

Like my farts, my perspirant smells like roses, and besides, deodorant has something like aluminum oxide additives, and doesn't that cause alzheimer's

Amen. Close proximity. Stressful work. Humid climates. Synthetic fabrics. Genetics. If you ain’t doing anything, and living here in California, you might be okay. I find deodorant to be a preventive measure. I don’t need it until I do and I’ll be damned if I am going to inflict my stench on someone else. I am grateful to others who follow this creed.

That said, everybody should know by now that that aluminum chlorhoxyridy-stuff in Arrid Extra Dry is bad for your skin and pits. I remember when it first came out. It practically burned my pit-skin putting it on. I just use the older kind of gel-stick stuff.

Need, as in medically necessary? Of course not. But I will continue to use it. I tried to go without before. I could smell my own pits. Naw.

Most days, I don't put it on. If I plan on doing anything physical, I will apply in advance.

My wife has no problem telling me I smell, so I typically don't.

It depends on your body. It is something I rarely need, I am a low sweat, low funk, skin type.

I usually wear it anyway, as I select products with a pleasing scent for those allowed close enough to discover it, but history has shown on the rare occasion I have gone without, no one has known.

That is true, from my experiences, some people just seem to produce more nasty smell than others. Part of it is their diet, from what I've heard, other parts would be what their body is trying to get rid of.

Nasty oder to some of us my be the scent of nector to the gods to somebody else. :laughing

C'mere and smell my pits...closer...closer....
Hey, can someone grab the smelling salts ?

Mad
