just like real life isnt a place for you...keep talkin shit........

Oh I just wanted to say too that pulling the top of the ear back like is shown in that video is a great tip.

I never really thought about noise other than it being a nuisance, but you deaf old-timers have inspired me to order some earplugs to try it out. :thumbup

I was mostly afraid of plugs cutting out useful noises, but from what you all say there's nothing to worry about. I ordered a 50 pack of those earsoft ones from ebay for less than $10 shipped, so I'll post back once I give them a try!

For those of you who think you don't need earplugs, you need to be aware of what will eventually happen. It's not just the hearing loss, but tinnitus that you want to prevent.

You know how your ears ring after being near a firecracker or near someone shooting a gun? Once you have tinnitus your ears will be like that all the time with no way to make it go away. I didn't wear earplugs during my first few decades of riding and now I'm stuck with that ringing. I can tune it out, but if I even think about it, like right now, there it is. I'm stuck with it 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days of the year.

If you ride for more than 20 minutes without earplugs you'll notice a bit of ringing. If you ride for hours without them, it will be with you for a longer time. Do it long enough and it stays with you permanently.

Tinnitus never goes away - Protect your ears now
along w/the loss of hearing, I got that 24 hours a day ringing as well. It really sucks!!! Makes going to sleep difficult...non-repairable by docs.

Going deaf is part of being a biker?

Quite possibly the dumbest statement I have ever read on BARF...and I spend most of my time in the Sink!

Hearing damage is something you do not notice occurring because it (typically) happens slowly over time. When you finally do figure it out it is too late, because the damage is permanent and irreversible. Once it is gone it is NEVER coming back.

well he did tell the guy on the SJ->SF commute thread to "sack-up" and lanesplit the 101 both ways every day, I'd say that's even dumber. :rolleyes

That was my worry, as well, but as said here - you can hear important things better when you cut out the wind and road noise. Try it, you'll love it. :)

I know too many people with tinnitus and hearing loss, and I want to do everything reasonable to avoid it. I don't want to live in a world where I can't enjoy music anymore.

I've been riding with foamies for several years. I bought some custom plugs a few weeks back. The left one didn't stay put, so I had to have a new impression made and the plug re-molded. Now they fit very well, but I haven't logged much time with them. My initial impressions are:

- much easier to insert; I can easily do it one-handed (foamies require two hands)

- more comfortable; I'm pretty sensitive to ear pain, and most foamies get uncomfortable after 40 minutes or so for me. Hearos were the best, but the customs are better.

- the noise attenuation is different. The foamies seem to cut down on all noise, the customs seem to cut down wind noise more than others. I wouldn't describe them as better than foamies but they seem to be about as effective as foamies. Too early to tell a real difference yet.

The ones I got are made by Westone.

Wimp. :laughing

The wind noise is a killer on your ears. It's not even that audible but a great stress on ear internals. Use earplugs all the time.

If i wear a helmet, i use ear plugs, its that simple. Some prefer fancy custom sets, i prefer cheap ones from 3M, You can use them for a few days if your ears and hands are clean and you have a container to store them between uses.

I also use them when discharging firearms or when fire alarm goes off in the building. Gotta protect your hearing so it lasts longer.

My Arai Vector is one of the loudest helmets I've worn.

Your posts have that special mixture of arrogance and ignorance, with lame macho internet tough-guy bullshit drizzled on top. Thumbs down. :thumbdown

:wow
