Espresso maker

Expresso doesn't require an expensive machine either, it's just preferred by some.

There are stovetop expresso makers that are used by many.
moka pots. they work great. you can get stove top milk frothers, too.

Turkish style is very nice too and doesn't require an expensive machine....
first and only time i ever had turkish coffee was in vienna. about 2” in the small cup, with about a tablespoon of it drinkable. but that tablespoon was pure heaven. have never been able to replicate it. if you can provide advice, it would be greatly appreciated.

I just spent a week with a Breville. Pretty cool machine. I have been using a La Pavoni for some 20 years. 25+ years. It’s pretty awesome and does require occasional maintenance but I think they last forever. Dude in Santa Cruz has serviced it for me. I am lazy. No not that, busy. I need to go riding not doing other maintenance.

Follow this! Oh and a Gas Stove makes controlling the heat MUCH easier.
A good copper Cezve is important, but you could get away with Stainless Steel
I just made Turkish coffee using this recipe:

Not bad.
That is a GREAT article and it hit all of the most import points. I will usually stir continuously at the beginning & at first boil when the foam first comes up, then let it come up again (the foam is usually denser then).

huge thanks for the info. i ordered a copper cezve. can’t wait to get it and try this.

that said, i told my dude that i was going to try this. he laughed and said he predicted the same outcome as when i made a big jar of iced coffee recently. apparently i let it sit too long. drank it, and it just about killed me. i told him this would be okay. him: ‘oh yeah, you’re gonna be crawling around on your hands and knees again’. we’ll see.

one of my favorite memories in istanbul last year was having a young man make me a beautiful turkish coffee.

i asked his name.

“salih.”

i told him he had the most beautiful name, in fact my very favorite turkish name, as it’s the one i gave my son. he was kind from the beginning but that exchange kicked up the hospitality even another notch.

Is it caffeine or something else?

i think it’s caffeine. if it’s possible to overdose on it, i think that’s what i may have done. when i made the iced coffee, i put it in the refrigerator and forgot about for a week (grounds in it). was excited to try it, and poured myself a huge glass, mixed in some chocolate torani - tasted great. half hour later i was on the floor. found out later that a) i used twice the amount of grounds that i should have, and b) waited WAY too long to remove them.

of grounds
Speaking of grounds, make sure 1000% you can get them soooo fine - it will feels as if you can put them on like makeup powder. That my best analogy I can give.
A burr grinder can do this well. However I have used one of these https://www.crateandbarrel.com/krups-fast-touch-coffee-grinder/s519208 for like ~5 mins to litterally pulverize my coffee beans killing them twice :ROFLMAO: (after they are ground, continuing it will make perfect powder for turkish style coffee)

Let me see if I can add some picture content to this tread tomorrow morning!

caught that from what you said previously. and yeah, have a great burr grinder, so no worries there.

HUGE thanks for mentioning this. can’t wait to try it. it will take me back to vienna - probably my favorite large city in the world.

I purchased a Gaggia for my partner who loves to make me coffee when he is here. Love it. I just use a Keurig for day to day.

I finally made a decision on a machine to replace my old espresso machine. I was all set to get the Sanremo YOU because it can do pressure profiling, but after giving it much thought and going back and forth, I decided I really don't need to go down another rabbit hole in the quest for perfection when all I really want is a no fuss process to get a good quality espresso every morning. I still wanted to upgrade from what I was used to and still wanted a machine in the kitchen I can't take my eyes off of, so I ordered a Rocket Bicocca this morning. The machine will pay for itself in less than two years plus I won't have to settle for an "ok" espresso shot anymore because it's so hard to find a good espresso from a coffee shop unless you are in Italy or Germany. LOL! I'll post a review after I've dialed it in.
