first bike

^ thank you.. i really want to just start out on a r6 or a honda cbr 600.. its just hard for me to pass up that deal since im on a budget for a bike...prolly $3500-$4500

i will however not go cheap on my helmet though.. i've been looking at the shoei rf1100 and xtwelve (feedback on these appreciated).. how are helmets suppose to fit.. i tried a med and its really tight right now (thinking the pads will losen up and be perfect) The Large i tried fits ok, a little snug but im scared it might end up being lose when i ride.

With helmets, don't focus on one brand in particular, try on as many brands as you can to see what fits best. When doing that give it time, put a helmet on and wear it for a while. Some heads fit Shoei, others Arai, others <insert list of brands here>. The pads will compress a bit after you start wearing it for a while so keep that in mind as well. So don't confuse a high price with being a better helmet for you, it's really important to ensure a proper fit. My last bit, please apply the "I won't go cheap" approach to all your gear. Having good gear means more than just a good helmet, protect your whole body with proper gear. :thumbup

Ditto! You can find many great bargains within the "Gear for Sale" Thread on BARF, Craigslist, and even online retailers. Just gotta keep an eye out! ATGATT!

finally bought my first helmet... i bought a Shoei Rf-1100.. i paid $430 otd... is that an ok deal?... thoughts? almost time for me to take the MSF

bro, u havent ever ridden a motorcycle? or the MSF courses 250"s and you want a liter? no dice bro.. i say no go on that R1.. great price, but i dont think a broken leg, arm, etc or even a lost life is worth saving a few grand.. stick with a 600 or lower for your first bike.. i had a 250 when i first started, and yea i got rid of it after 6 months, cause it got boring, but i learned a whole lot, "throtle control, breaking, leaning, etc etc... even with a 600, you'll never use its full potential on the street "for casual riding".. dont go R1 bro.. its to much bike for a beginner.. i strongly advise against it..just saying..

Here's my 1st bike, 92 Nighthawk 750. Runs great, well taken care of and it will continue to be. I think it's a good learner but still has enough power to feel at home on the freeway (and seems to do ok in high winds on the freeway too, which had me a little worried at first). Anyway, here's the pics:

started on a gs500 a bit more than a year ago. On at least two occasions I would have dropped a heavier bike at an intersection, when I was first getting my balance together. It also would have taken much much longer to get semi-comfortable leaning into turns. And do you really wanna be the guy on the R1 going through turns at 15 mph, while 250s are blasting by? Because trust me, while you will get a lot out of it, msf won't make you a pro, and you just look silly on a bike that way outclasses your skill.

i started on an 07 gsxr 600! great bike! bought it last june, only rode the canyons every weekend, now in the process of converting it to a track bike! i will say that there are lots of people start out on too big of a bike!!! i am 6'7" 250 W/O gear! everyone told me to go with a smaller bike(but i had my mind set on the 600!) i took my time and was very careful! i would crack the throttle in a straight line just to get a feel for what it would do and spent a lot of time practicing throttle control(about a month) and i have great friends that told me "Ride your own pace" do not try to keep up with faster people(you WILL become a statistic) by baby has not been down! and that is because i was patient and smart! i may never own a 1k the 600 has plenty of power on the track! i am thinking of picking up a FZ1 or SV1 as my street bike! they are so fun and comfy! be smart who cares what you look like at first!!! the fact that you are on 2 wheels is awesome enough!!! if you go too big in the begining you will either scare yourself and may never ride again(seen it happen) or you will crash and may never ride again(seen that too) :thumbup

it really seems to be based of the person and skill level/safely of their riding. short and simple, don't over do it...but if you can get 600 and don't feel like starting off on a 250 then upping the ante why not do it. just be SAFE about it and learn your bike! :thumbup

Most riders would probably recommend start with a 250. I personally built up my riding skills on a 03 SV650 and it's a great bike to learn and very easily to ride as well. I would consider looking into one with the type of budget you have. Let me know what you decide. Good luck

Looking for first bike... any help would be appreciated!!!
