first bike

i started on an 07 gsxr 600! great bike! bought it last june, only rode the canyons every weekend, now in the process of converting it to a track bike! i will say that there are lots of people start out on too big of a bike!!! i am 6'7" 250 W/O gear! everyone told me to go with a smaller bike(but i had my mind set on the 600!) i took my time and was very careful! i would crack the throttle in a straight line just to get a feel for what it would do and spent a lot of time practicing throttle control(about a month) and i have great friends that told me "Ride your own pace" do not try to keep up with faster people(you WILL become a statistic) by baby has not been down! and that is because i was patient and smart! i may never own a 1k the 600 has plenty of power on the track! i am thinking of picking up a FZ1 or SV1 as my street bike! they are so fun and comfy! be smart who cares what you look like at first!!! the fact that you are on 2 wheels is awesome enough!!! if you go too big in the begining you will either scare yourself and may never ride again(seen it happen) or you will crash and may never ride again(seen that too) :thumbup

this for me. i got an 03 gsxr 600. there are a few spots where i will tac out and get the heart pumping, roads where there is massive visibilty and i know it, my "commute", i don't push my limits in corners or traffic. i am willing to sit back at a light, or behind cars. hell i followed a tractor in a 45-55 doing 25 with a line of 5 cars giving me room to pass.

i have a bike in nice shape and i do not want to ruin it. but the biggest factor in me getting this bike is the size and comfort of sitting on it. and am trying to convince my friend she does not need to get that r6 her BF is trying to convince her to get.

DRz 350 or 400. Stone fence reliable.

That's such a great consideration to carry with you. A buddy of mine had an 09 GSXR750 in his shop, not to be worked on but because the owner drove it off the dealer's lot and had an electrical failure at 276 miles on the odometer. Not that the GSXR is unreliable or anything but anything can happen, and if you have a bike that is broken in and maintained, AND holds its own in the long haul (some specific models come to mind) you've got something good!

My two cents are that the V-Twin is the way to go, very smooth power curve. I have a 2008 SV650SF. The sporty styling and leaned forward position are enough to turn heads so you don't feel like a lamer. But what is really most important: making you feel safe on the bike. Peakier bikes can be touchy and twitchy especially coming out of corners when riding aggressive. As far as feeling safe and making you want to push it for that thrill of riding the SV is an amazing starter bike.

Some day I'll get a more sport focused bike, and maybe do some track days ($$$ permitting), but I know I made the right choice with my SV.

Yeah I don't think I could have started on a better bike.

My first bike was a 1975 trail 70, ugly blue but I loved it! Of course that was back in like 1985 and I was only 11. I babied that bike for the 2 years I had it, then jumped up to a real bike. :D

uh...this thread just made me miss my old 70, I think I'll buy another one. :laughing

Response to first bike

Hi,

I just started riding a year ago and being a female who is pretty petite, I didn't have that many choices. I bought one of those Dummies book which turned out to be ok. There was a section that had pictures of all types of bikes and what was recommended for newbies. The first thing you have to ask yourself is what style you like and what type of riding you plan to do. You would also want to consider what size engine you can handle.

I bought a 250 because I am only about 5'5'' and 120 lbs. So, I wanted to ride the bike, not have the bike ride me! I have a Ninja 250 which still needs to have the seat lowered and I also have a little cruiser. The cruiser is a lot easier to handle because it has a lower center of gravity.

Hope this helps. Make sure you take the motorcycle safety course offered by Motorcyle Safety Foundation, if you haven't already done so.:)

5'5 120 is Amazonian compared to a lot of women I know who ride :)
