Five valve heads for dummies ...

^^ :thumbup

two intake valves and one exhaust valve per cylinder is what I meant … think the Hawk GT was three valves per cylinder?

will see what I can find out, the CX500 is venerable enough that I should know if it has four valves or three off the top of my head. :laughing
Yeah, and as I recall, so did the 400 and 450 twins, which were also known as Hawks in some markets.

My Yamaha 700 Fazer is a five valve motor. Setting the valves is a pain in the ass both for access and the fact that shims are hard to find (it uses a lash cap, instead of the flat shims like more modern bikes). Even many caps are no longer available from dealers. I have found that 600 wet and dry on a glass plate will cut them down if needed numbers are no longer available. I then sand off the original numbers on the side of the shims, and replace with marker pen. I don't know if the marker will last, but any without numbers gets measured anyway. Not worried about hardness as the cams ride on lifter cups, so no direct contact with cams. AND there are 20 of the bastards!
