Fixed Gear

Do you ride bicycles every day? I do. And I usually ride my track bike. I ride all over the city, and I got this bike to ride, lock up and not worry about too much. If somebody steals it, good luck riding away! and if they do make it away, good luck stopping!

All that said, I really like riding my cross bike. it's faster, I can go off road, I have gears and I can stop faster. But the wheels are quick release and have knobby tires, and I would cry of somebody stole my Dura Ace or Ultegra components. [/IMG]

Man, I'd cry if someone stole my Sugino 75s. And isn't that a BrassKnuckle? Beutiful bike, but hardly something I'd lock up and not worry about, esp. with all the riders who can skidstop nowadays.

BTW I like the twisted spokes on the rear! YOu build them yourself? Lot's of work, but SWEET results! :thumbup

need some help here guys, so im thinking about getting a single speed, Ive been riding cross country and downhill just about most my life (ill be 35 in feb) and was looking for a way to get back into shape after all the surgeries ive had over the last few years (5 ankle reconstructions and 1 knee surgery about a month ago) when a friend suggested i try out a single speed bike. ive been looking around but have some questions i hope you can answer.

I will be using the bike mostly for bike paths and riding around here in concord, but am wondering if i should go for a road bike frame or more of an offroad frame? like i said ive ridden off road most ny life and am intrigued by a road style bike, I like the idea of going fast on the streets. the one bike i looked at in person was the SE lager:

I got to play with one at a local sports store and for the price it looks to be pretty good,I dont plan on losing the brakes and to start i would leave it as a freewheel. I can get a deal on a new one for about 375 to 400 bucks.

but i also looked at the IRO dirt model and am starting to like that as well.

also im about 5ft9 5ft10, what size bike would i need? on my offroad bike's ive always gone with a small to medium size frame.

thanks for your help:thumbup:ride

I prefer retractable gear.

Legend has it, SE Lager frame is total junk but that looks like a solid bike. The componentry is pretty meh but who cares - like anything else it'll all work forever if you maintain it. Another (funner, cheaper, more rad) option would be to build your own. It's fun and easy; if I could do it anyone can! You just need lots of new bicycle-specific tools :rolleyes But for serious, you can find a sweet lugged steel frame road bike with sweet componentry for way less money and fix it up yourself for minimal dollars.

Road bike sizing is based more on your inseam than your height. Road bike sizing is measured in CM. It starts at the top of the seat tube and ends at the center of the crank. You probably ride a 54-56cm frame. Also pay attention to standover height, thats the vertical measurement from the top tube to the ground (usually measured in inches for some reason). So if you have a 32" inseam, youd probably want a bike with 30"-31" standover height. But, the only foolproof way to tell if a bike is the right size is to ride it!

Oh, good luck! Let us know what you end up getting :)

I don't have brakes.. but I ride in Davis.

I just built a new bike. now I need to get to Hellyer! Caltrain goes down there from SF, but the 8:30 AM saturday sessions are what's killing me on the deal!

I've had my SE lager frame for over a year now, currently set up as a CX bike. Have ridden it well over 1000 miles mostly on but ALOT of off road and even raced it in some minor CX events. The steel frame is extremely forgiving and is my desired choice for a road ride under 50 miles. It's cheap and easily modifiable and as I bought one of the first you could only get them in flat black with no logos so it's nice and unassuming so it makes a good city bike. Definitely needed to upgrade the BB cranks and chain but it's still got the same wheels and headset which haven't given out in all the miles of abuse and downright neglect I've subjected it to.

However now that they are mass producing them as boutique bikes who knows. If you come across any of the original 06/07 ones in either flat black or beige for cheap it's a really great bike.

DeathB4mullets, niiiiice bike! (I have an '08 model) -which i'll soon be selling for an '09.:teeth

C'mon down to the track and break (not literally) that thing in!:party

That is a sweet sweet track ride~!

Yep, just make sure to change your bars to drops before hitting the track. Bullhorns are a no-go.

I would imagine since he's riding it on the road, the bullhorns would make for a less-aggressive posture? I am thinking of getting some because my frame is a little too small (49cm) for my body, and it makes me hunch over really low when get my hands down on the drops.

It's nice to see all your fair weather, fashion statement bikes, but here is a real street bike.

:laughing I'm going to assume you're kidding.
pretty bike, I like the navy blue with the saddle/bar tape.
i hate to tell you tho that of all the bikes on here, yours is the most fashionable at present. All you need is a rack...

I jest in a self loathing way, but we all have to admit that fixed gears a lot fashion, especially features like no brakes (dumb, illegal) deep-vs, spoke cards, aero spoke, goofy bars, tube pads, ect.

update!

^^speaking of fashion, deep vs, and dumb, illegal brakeless bikes...I got some new goodies for mine to get rid of the cheap heavy IRO components:
salsa stem
chris king headset
sugino cranks and BB
soma cog
components are now worth as much or more than the frame :| not sure how I feel about that.

Here's a picture of my fixed gear after I repainted it in 2007. It's a mid-sixties vintage Masi Special. Still a great ride.
