Former UFC HW Champ arrested for attempted murder

Legally, it's still pretty good. As MD says, if you wanna murder someone and get away with it, or...mostly get away with, have a few drinks and get behind the wheel.

Seems like you could google just about any of them. They do a few years and get back to partying.

That is just moving the goalposts of what we were discussing, and if you believe it you should be able to demonstrate it without the classic "Go do your own research" trope :)

Well, it's a little confusing. Like asking if I can prove that it's actually the garbage men picking up garbage and not aliens. You can just....look outside.

But, I spent three seconds and googled for you and this was the first specific article after some legal articles...

Eduardo Gutierrez's mangled motorcycle serves as a bitter reminder for his family. The 53-year-old father and grandfather was killed by a drunk driver last August.

"By basically dragging him 300 feet, she essentially tortured him before he died," the man's daughter, Jordan Figueroa, said.

According to a California Highway Patrol report, the driver, 32-year-old Cecila Martinez, was speeding and under the influence when she rear-ended Gutierrez. A witness with a radar device told investigators he clocked Martinez's speed at 114 mph.

This past July, Martinez pleaded guilty to one count of felony vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated.

She said family, friends and the prosecutor also implored Riverside County Superior Court Judge Thomas Kelly to hand down the maximum sentence. Instead, Martinez was sentenced to one year in jail with 58 days credit and five years probation.

Yeah, but if you happened to drunk drive yourself into the already criminally charged molester of your child, it's not going to be viewed just a random DUI fatality. There will likely be a case for charges that result in a much longer term.

It's amazing how many think civil rights only apply to people they like. I assume all of you who think this was a reasonable thing to do would support skipping Cain's trial and just tossing him in jail? He isn't even contesting that he shot a random person so why bother with the trial?

If our constitutional protections don't apply to the most vile person among us they are worthless.

That's true, but it's still not that hard. If it's a more personal situation, you just try to get them to throw popcorn on you, then you're home free to serve up a fresh slice of justice.

Touche!

The MMA HW fighter probably had a one dimensional, "ground and pound" strategic background. Regardless of legallity, morality, or the probability of the accused molester causing more pain before trial, crashing your car into another's, and shooting it up when others are in, is an obvious act of poorly thought out retribution.

Judging by Cain's "cauliflower ear" he's taken some serious blows to the head due to his profession, so I'm sure the possibility of CTE as a defense will be on the table.

Cauliflower ear is mostly due to wrestling/grappling. But I do understand where you're going with this and the CTE angle.

while Cain's motivation may be noble and in line with how a lot of us feel, the reality is he committed a crime that will probably have him behind bars for a period of time instead of being there to lend support and strength to his family.

I am big MMA fan (watch/train) so this obviously got my attention.

Cliff Notes:
A suspected child toucher touches a 'close relative' of Cain Velasquez at a day care. Gets charged then released with no bail. Cain follows the guy, crashes his car into the kid touchers car and shoots up the car. 2 other people were with the kid toucher at the time. This happened in the San Jose area.

Cain is a former heavyweight champ with the UFC and at least in the discussion as the greatest HW of all time.

Yeah, that is too bad he couldn't hang his shit on, but his circumstances are understandable. Damn shame.

Yes, as stated above, this is from wrestling, and the constant grinding of that flesh which produces scar tissue over time. It's why wrestlers and Jiujitsu types wear ear protection. I find after a grappling session, my ears hurt quite a bit.

I also box and I'm a karateka, and my ears don't get hit much - most of the time - not at all.

When I say most of the martial arts community has Cain's back, is that we understand the circumstance and support him. Most likely, he will have to pay for the crime. That being said, Bushido/Budo Code a real thing that many of us live by. I definitely live by it.

For those who have never fought, or been in a fight, or cowered in a confrontation wouldn't understand this. The main reason why most of us even got into martial arts is because we were bullied, harassed, faced violence, been physically hurt, humiliated, or experience physical/sexual malevolence upon us. That's my personal experience. I started learning when I was 6 by my father who was a boxer and Shotokan 2nd degree black belt. Start officially going to class when I was 9, and started fighting competitively when I was 12.

So yeah, if I even discovered somebody hurt my wife or step-son, there is no telling what lengths I would go to to seek justice.

Also, martial artists are the most calm, respectful people in the world. I'm not talking about the fake martial artists, I'm talking about people who train and face overwhelming violent circumstances on a daily basis in a consensual, controlled environment (dojo/gym). When you train that hard, to the limits of your skills and knowledge and win and lose - daily - it humbles you.

So, to see Cain go to this length, it is very surprising. I share his sentiment though - child touchers can burn in hell, for all I care. F 'em; they are the lowest of the low scums of the earth.

The reactions from people supporting someone who shot someone who’s not even being charged with a crime is hilarious sad.
