garage flooring

:twofinger Obviously I'd add a bike lift and a car lift but aside from that I love the organization and cleanliness. I hate working in dirty messy conditions vs clean ones.

Clean is one thing. That garage is a showpiece, not a workspace.

If you guys think that garage is special, don't visit any of the garage threads on the big Porsche or Ferrari sites. That garage is ghetto compared to the stuff you'll see on there. Some equipped to do real work and some designed merely as a comfortable place to keep a high end car and hang out.

It's like anything else with no real use-I don't see the point. That workbench ain't seeing no work. Just admit reality and put a wet bar there.

Given how much working on cars is laptops and electronics these days, I wouldn't draw that conclusion just yet.

That garage is not my cup of tea, but I do like some of the garages I've seen in the Porsche owners forum. Lots of great ideas in them, from working garages to more museum type, with everything in between. Key is organization.

:dunno I worked as a mechanic for 6.5 years in some extremely shitty conditions. Laying in puddles of mud comprised of coolant, fuel, oil, grease, and whatever shit drained out of the belly plates, in 110 degree heat or negative 15 and snowing outside where your tools freeze to the ground, for anywhere from 8-36 hour shifts. Having a clean, air conditioned, organized garage with retractable reels rather than coils laying everywhere, quiet with the air compressor tucked away...sounds like heaven comparatively.

That's your perspective.

Clean organized shop is nice. OCD is a waste. All that effort spent making it too nice is just effort that should have gone to build the fucking car.

It's like your boss buying fancy new equipment for the workplace and he hasn't caught up on payroll. Just the wrong priorities. Also after that shit you should be used to it and able to handle it.

Or maybe I just need to find a mechanics helper who was a marine......:p

I wanna see what it looks like after he tries to get some stuff out of those drawers with greasy hands.

Climate control in the garage would be amazing though, who hasn't sweated their balls off or been freezing working on stuff in there before?

Doing a garage remodel on my house. in addition to the floori I'm wondering what to do with cabinets. Nothing as fancy as Pete's dream garage, but something of good quality. Based on what I've found to date I'm thinking of building my own

somewhere out there on the intarweb is a thread wherein there are pictures of a garagemahal with a ferrari something parked in it. your voiced opinion is the prevailing one in the thread untill the owner stops by and posts pics of said ferrari up on the lift with the engine out, doing a major service himself.

the tone of the thread changes, and it is certainly what i assume is the exception to the rule. if i had the funds to have a garage like that built i'd do it, but not if i have to DIY. i want to work on my actual projects, not the 5 projects that aren't fun in front of my actual project.

I kinda hate cabinets. building good ones requires a pretty good carpenter. something is always in the way of opening them, lots of wasted inside space because of inefficient packing.

i kinda love slideout drawers. cabinets i have to bend over and peer into the deep dark depths. drawers i can slide out and peruse relatively easily.

if you agree start looking at names like lista, lyon, and vidmar. there are others but those are the heavy hitters. price will floor you.

i have a bunch of filing cabinets to store parts in, i don't need the 400lb per drawer capacity of the above mentioned brands, and the drawers still slide almost all the way out. i could cram even more stuff in there if i spend a day making extenders so the drawer is the same height as the drawer front but.. see above comment about projects ahead of projects and i have enough crap, i don't need more storage capacity i need less crap and some blinders.

what do you want to do in your garage, that's a big factor in how to outfit it?

I saw someone do a row of cabinets from Home Depot. I *think* they had wheels on the bottom which would be useful. Basically if you ever add anything new to the old shop and it no longer works it's easier to move shit around.

I just picked up metal shelves to put in the room off the barn:

The only garage/shops I've seen that clean that get used are for the F1 teams, but then I am a farmer. That being said, I'd love to have something like that, but it wouldn't stay that clean for long. You'd spend as much time cleaning it as you would spend wrenching.

have shelves like that right now and they work pretty good with storage boxes. Need cabinets because I want dust free storage and some of them will be uppers only.

Looking good Dave. Last time I was there, the was a 1 1/4 ton military vehicle with no brakes sitting right there, I guess it rolled away.

Regarding bike lifts, I've got a Harbor Freight model, which they've warranteed once, the pump blew. They replaced the whole lift, but the one they replaced it with (same part number), is lighter and flimsier than my original one. My neighbor had a K&L lift, which is about 10 times more sturdy than the Harbor Freight one, and has an air operated cylinder, powers up by itself. If I had to do it again, I'd spend the extra bucks.

I got stainless steel cabinets from Garage Toys, to match a rollaway and two floor caddies. they are beautiful. just throwing that out there for you to consider.

I have built in shelves in my garage. Would these slide out shelves fit within the existing shelves?

My next project for the garage is to add insulation and installing new drywall and polishing the floor like Mr. Incredible posted.
