garage flooring

I have built in shelves in my garage. Would these slide out shelves fit within the existing shelves?

My next project for the garage is to add insulation and installing new drywall and polishing the floor like Mr. Incredible posted.

No, they are stand alone drawers, like filing cabinets but typically used in machine shops or similar situations where you have to organize lots of small metal parts. Screws, drill bits, end mills etc. This is mostly what you see on the used market. If ordering new they'll make you whatever configuration you can dream up.

retrofitting drawers to your shelves is very possible on a DIY level from making it all from scratch to various degrees of having a pro do it and you install.

I'd like to build something similar to an FRS someday. No wasted space there.

That is badass. I am purposely not looking those up on auction sites.

We're had those Lista cabinets. 400 lbs capacity, each drawer. The more weight you put in them, the easier they open and close. Like SnapOn toolboxes, but better. I wish I could afford those.

Ideally i'd like a mix of steel shelves, cabinets and a bunch of hooks for everything else.

Flooring will be epoxy and i'll insulate/drywall the whole garage and paint the walls.

Of course there will be a wall mount TV, and ceiling mount speakers.

The only thing I havent thought about is my workbench.

We had 3 in my old unit IIRC. One for the wheel guys, one for the track guys, one for the services guys. That got chopped to 2 for our second deployment, but damn if we didn't make good use of them. Called the Snap-On guys and had them come out and outfit them with everything we could get from Snap-On.

For those too lazy to click the link and read, basically it's a mobile workshop roughly the size of a small pickup that has full metric and standard wrenches, 1/4", 3/8", 1/2", 3/4" drive regular and impact socket sets, a bunch of special tools for military specific vehicle problems, a full welding setup (both wire feed and stick), oxyacetylene torch setup, a 5 ton crane, large air compressor with a full set of power tools, a generator capable of running all that and more, work lights and extension cords, a couple GM toolboxes that have their own full complement of tools but are about the size of 2 carryon bags, BDAR (Battle Damage Assessment and Repair) kits that include fiberglass repair, bondo, and other stuff....the list goes on. It's literally a full mechanic's shop, welder's shop, and body shop all rolled into one compact transportable package.

That's your perspective.

True, but most of the folks spending the money to build a super high end garage like the one in the original pic don't have two old cars in the bay. More typically there's a high end, late model car or two in there, and the work they do is less grease and more silicon.

Great thread on Rennlist about guys building GPS based exhaust valve closing mechanisms in their garages to pass sound at tracks like Laguna. A lot of brain work, not a lot of dirty work.

When I worked for Dan Kyle, he bought Kurt AngleLock milling machine vises off Ebay, and mount them on his work benches. Much better than a normal vise.

Ideally you have a Kurt or 3, and a few wilton bullets in various sizes because sometimes you need to grip some pipe!

Good tip. I learned long ago never underestimate the usefulness of a good vise.

Stan, I was shocked when I priced a machinist vise, not even a mill vise , but a machinist bench vise. $1200- $1500. I bought a used Kurt from some guy in Camarillo when I had my mill, for $175. It worked well.

Do you have a source in Camarillo that can sell me those vise for less than 200 bucks. I can drive to Camarillo for that price.

craigslist tools section for vises. a kurt at that level will likely have been crashed into but it's typically only cosmetic. the jaws are replaceable so if that's where the crash was, no biggie at all. you have to have cash on the spot and be ready to leave work early to get the good deals though. used vises and anvils are in high demand

Yeah - that garage I posted is a guy who lives in Australia and has a BMW M4 and another 435 IIRC.

Dafuq is that called?

I want a pattern makers vise.

That is a BMF vise. Technically speaking of course.

I bought that Kurt AngleLock from a private party Craigslist ad. It had a couple extra holes drilled in the top, but the jaws were real nice and he put new bearings in it. You see them listed down here and in the LA area for about $200.

Check these out.

BMFV goes with the BFH?

I wish that listing were up here, those little palmgrens are rarely available in the bay area and peopleask silly.money. it is yet another consequence of manufacturing leaving the area, the machine shops close up and used tooling gets scarce

I miss the tooling costs back east-lots of ancient shops and tooling kicking around. Much cheaper than the stuff around here.

Hell, someone had given me a working Brown and Sharp surface grinder.

I saw a K. O. Lee grinder go for $300 in Oxnard. It is in Alan Johnson's block shop now, one of the guys there bought it when I worked there. Not quite a B & S but decent.
