Getting Cut Off Handled Like A Gentleman

Yep, that one was all you buddy. Good on you for not reacting like an asshat given your perception of being wronged (still, honking is not quite "gentlemanly").

That's faster than I would like to split at night. Take a look in your mirror in gridlock traffic and I bet you wouldn't see an approaching motorcycle most of the time either. When I put myself in a bad situation and someone doesn't see me I blame that on me not them :2cents

Exactly my opinion.

I can't see motorcycles splitting up behind me at night, it's just one light in a sea of lights.

This is in the same category as those vloggers who are going 20 over the speed limit and get's mad when someone 'cuts them off'.

I am curious how you have determined that I was doing 20mph over the other vehicles. Were you standing there with a radar gun as the video was taken? I didn't see you. Would a cop really pull me over? With what evidence? How could they prove it in court? You should also note that this is a wide angle camera, which causes the illusion of accelerated movement at the sides.

Riding hundreds of thousands of miles and watching about 10,000 motorcycle vids. The cop will use his judgement just like I did and as for the court, it would your word vs his.

Frankly, it is ok with me if you felt in danger or offended by what I see as reasonable driving. I have had a few traffic confrontations which evaluated later, may not have been as egregious as my response.

I just realize on BARF that there is no sympathy, especially when you distort your story.

The burden of proof lies on the officer, and if all he has is his word, then the case is lost for him. I don't expect any sympathy, I know all the trolls with anonymous accounts hiding behind a screen name are going to come out, and despite all of the past conversation, post a redundant reply. I just don't care. It was a really minor incident and it humors me that people are getting so worked up. :laughing

easy to dismiss things that you don't want to hear as coming from trolls. please remember that most of us moto riders are more concerned with communicating a message than protecting your feelings. feelings can blind you.

and yeah, some folks here spend as much, or more time in traffic as you.

It was an abusive use of the turn signal and while I am glad he used his signal, as it caused me to focus my attention on him/her, it is not the way it is meant to be used and if you think this is the correct way to drive and you ride, I am a bit concerned for you.

I wish more cars would abuse their turn signals.

Hope you never really get cut off splitting lanes.

just imagine everytime that thing blinks.. uhh.. ahhh...uhhh...ahhh....uhhh...ahhh...

I didn't hit him or go down did I? I already admitted to being wrong on a few levels. You seem to be the arrogant one saying 'Duh' implying that I'm stupid. Fuck off. I'm glad you guys analyzed it, that's why I posted it in the first place. You all made some really good points and I'm glad you got me thinking and questioning about how I ride. Thanks for the views. :thumbup

You're the one with the issues here. Nobody else. Your entitlement mentality while splitting is going to bite you some day. That driver didn't do anything wrong or out of the ordinary for traffic conditions like that. You were going too fast, at night, and expecting everybody to part the red sea for the exalted one. :laughing Then you honk at him when he didn't cut you off, and you then have the nerve to say you 'handled it like a gentleman'? Whatever. :rolleyes

Smarter riders realize that a driver changing lanes could check his rearview mirror before going for the gap and not even see a motorcycle coming up because its headlight gets lost in the sea of other headlights. They would split at a slower pace and not put themselves in harms way like you did.

Keep up the good work. Good luck out there. :wave

I have mentioned before that broken traffic, where cars can jump lanes because of bigger gaps, is the most dangerous time to split.

I saw no reason to honk at that car. That car did nothing out of the ordinary, in my splitting opinion. It was a normal lane change and most of us look for lots of signs of cars changing lanes. Blinkers are WAY above and beyond what you normally see all the time on the road. Look out for yourself and don't expect sh!t from drivers. It's healthier that way.

I'm a bit confused by that "an abusive use of the turn signal" is. I've never heard that term.

I'd like to encourage you to shift your thinking about two points exemplified in this video:

1) At night time, car drivers have a harder time differentiating between what is a car and what is a moto behind them based solely on the information they are getting from headlights. That is compounded by the actual (low) percentage of drivers that turn their head to look behind them before making a lane change and not relying solely on their mirrors for information. My suggestion is you keep this in mind as you approach "pinch points" like slowing traffic, box trucks, etc.

2) It's California. You saw someone using their turn signal to communicate their driving intention to you. Statistically, more people have seen Yeti and UFOs than Californians using turn signals. Instead of annoyance, treat it for what it is: a polite driver trying to be safe and follow the rules.

If I can count 3 blinks before the vehicle moves over, I consider them to be a Most Considerate Commuter :thumbup

Yeah, not trying to pile on, but that was all you. The guy was obviously changing lanes from way back. No need to honk. That type of lane change is welcomed. Cars do not look for lane sharing motos. They just don't, and when you see them you should yield IMHO.

I would rather slow and let somebody over than have the guy I know is trying to change lanes decide to gun it right as I go by. Not to mention I am just grateful they aren't doing the no signal traffic dart. I can anticipate those if there is a space, but sometime people do it to try and wedge in and end up blocking the moto lane entirely.

If I see someone changing lanes, and they are indicating it, I slow and let them over every time. I have even helped people get into the lane by making some room for them in their intended destination lane, then gone around afterwards.

Another +1 for you not being cut off, for numerous reasons...

1. You were splitting very quickly, reducing how well he could see you in his mirrors. Too quickly per the law? I don't know, but certainly per common sense.
2. You were passing people, including him, giving him the right of way. Again, ambiguous per the law, but certainly against common sense.
3. This was at night, further reducing his ability to see you.
4. When drivers are in bumper-to-bumper traffic, they're looking to merge with what is next to them, not with what is 50 yards behind them. They're ignorant to this, perhaps, but you are not. This is also on you.

In other words, when you knowingly walk into a snake pit you can't complain when you get bitten.

I didn't get a chance to see the video but the OP wants a valid counter to his argument.

1. Cars aren't looking for us… end of story
2. If indeed there was a blinker going then why would you get near the car? When I see a blinker the theme from jaws starting going in my head.
3. Regardless of right or wrong there is a message in this thread that is being pounded into you by several people that ride. Even if you don't agree with it that is the community speaking to you. The same community that is going to give you advice wether you like it or not. The same community that will come save if god forbid you were hit by that car. We are here to help and sometimes that help may come with an ego check.

Ride safe, ride smart!

Edit: I just saw the video. There are so many signs that the car is going to move over. The car in the left lane even brakes to let him in.

Perhaps your ideas of being cut off differ from mine, but as far as I'm concerned, I was moving straight within my legal boundaries and this vehicle 'cut' into my field of travel, causing me to abruptly use the brakes. Anyone is welcome to also voice their opinion but I am not going to change my stance until a valid argument is made as to why this cager should not have to check for a motorcyclist splitting lanes before they change lanes.

Based on your posting style, you are an aggressive person with an air of self importance. I didn't see the video because you were embarrassed by it and deleted it. But based on the countless opinions of others, you ride like you post. I think the only troll on this thread is you (well and maybe me now).
