Helmets with a built in sun visor: suggestions

My buddy has the Bell photochromatic shield and his complaint is that it doesn't tint enough.

The GT-Air sizing is all screwed up because of the additional visor... for me. I don't fit the medium (too small) or the large (yup, you guessed it. Too big.)

I'm using a RF1100 with a light tint pinlock... it's does "ok" day and night but leaks during heavy down pours... which hasn't been a problem this year. (we're screwed)

My brother just bought me this one:
Shark Vision-R Syntic
http://www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/shark-vision-r-syntic-helmet

I also picked up a Shark Vision-R this fall. Extremely happy with the quality and functionality. Not why I bough it, but it has by far the most upward visibility of any helmet I've worn, which is great for sport bikes. Fit's my intermediate oval heal very well.

Only complaints: I wish the sun shade were darker, and prefer a snap holder for the strap excess like on my Shoeis. This one is a loop you thread through.

Other helmets that fit me well were the Shoei RF-1000 and (better) the X11. Icon helmets fit my noggin well but were too tight in the cheeks (cheek pads can be swapped, but I didn't have a chance before mine got stolen in Bolinas).

I bought a GT Air in the fall after many years in Arai. I was surprised it fit and I really like it. I wear ear plugs so I cannot comment on noise by it flows air very well (hence the name) and the shield seals perfectly. Optics are excellent and I don't use the pinlock. The reason I bought it was that I didn't want a dark shield which is a problem for dusk/evening riding (yet I want glare protection during the day). With both shields down, visibility is excellent.

The other thing I learned after I bought it was that its very simple & quick the remove the shields if you want to wash them (vs. the Arai). A big plus IMO.

I got a great deal from a forum sponsor on the Duc forum. I got this one.

I have the Schuberth C3 Pro and it's "fine". Fiddling with the slide for the visor is awkward for me and I never remember which way it goes for up or down. When it's down, I'm looking through four things: my glasses, the sun shield, the pinlock insert, and the outer visor. This can be too much sometimes. I took out the pinlock and discovered that wow, it really works, because now my visor fogs up easily. I will put the pinlock back in for sure.

As for the rest of the helmet, I think it's fabulous and I don't know why I didn't buy one years ago. Of course, fit will be your main problem.

Yeah. I know Scuderia carries them, and will head down there to try one on first. I have been looking at the S2 and hope they have that one. I do not really want a modular...

Now to see if cycle gear has the Gt Air to try on as well. I know they will have the RF 1200...

I've owned two helmets with the integrated sun visor, a Shark S900 and now a Scorpion EXO-1100.

The Shark had a better visor as it was much darker, the Scorpion has a lightish visor but still does the trick if your eyes aren't overly sensitive to sunlight.

The Scoripon has a slightly better fit due to the inflatable cheekpads.

I'd recommend both helmets. I'm surprised that more manufacturers don't have this useful feature.

I've got an Exo-1000 for sale.in the gear section. I'm not saying that you have a small head, but if you do, check it out. Brand new for $50. ;)

Despite what my cognitive abilities may suggest, I actually have a size large or xtra large noggin. Otherwise I'd be all over that deal like a lesbian on a Subaru. :p:laughing

I have an HJC IS16. I bought it because it was the least expensive helmet with a sun visor that has pinloc face shields.

Instead of the $69 pinloc I got the $10 breath box for it.

It works great and with the breath box, is totally fog free. I use it strictly for commuting.

It keeps my Shoei RF1100 fresh for road trips and day rides.

The HJC is noticeably heavier and it reaches it's comfort threshold for my Shoei shaped head in about 90 minutes. But since I only wear it for 35 minutes at a time it's fine.

If you moto commute, get a beater helmet for the daily grind. It also helps separate your mindset and you'll find you enjoy the pleasure rides more. At least I find more joy in my fun rides and road trips because there is a psychological differentiation between my mode of transport and my passion/hobby.

I wanted to go with the GT Air but just did not like it when I tried it on at CG. Felt bigger and heavier compared to the other helmets I was shopping, and I didn't care for the fit or the liner. I really like the style and the features on that helmet, so I really wanted to like it.

Hmm, interesting. I have a few cheapo helmets, and while I use them occasionally I just always reach for the Shoei. I do like the idea of having a dedicated road trip/fun ride helmet though. I'll think about it.

Yeah, I called CG in SF and made sure they had one in stock. Probably will stop by to try it on tomorrow. I really want to like it too, so hopefully I don't have the same result as you.

That's exactly how I felt about the Air.

I have a Scorpion EXO-500 with the drop down inner sun shade combined with a mirror/tinted visor and love the combo. When I was commuting, it was usually right into the sun (usually when it was just coming up on the way to work and setting on the way home) and when I had the tinted visor *with* the sun shade down, I can ride without any problems... Normal riding (when it's not directly into the sun), the tinted visor does a fine job by itself.

Here's what I'm doing on my RF-1100 right now (until my photochromic shield with Pinlock finally ships):

Clear CW-1 shield with Pinlock (really wide FOV on this shield--I never notice the edges while riding) with...

...Fog City Speed Tint on the inside. It just barely fits on the Pinlock insert. I added the electrical tape to cover the gap at the top. I'm a dummy and mistakenly bought the Arai version so it has notches for air vents on an Arai shield.

The Speed Tint is optically clear so you can still see through it if you find yourself in a tuck. Compared to carrying both a clear and tinted shield, or wearing sunglasses under a clear shield, I like this best for commuting. For recreational riding I still prefer a tinted shield.

I have an AFX FX-120 that has a sun visor, its so nice and convenient not being blinded by the sun or having to change anything out. I wouldnt really recommend the helmet (you can tell its built to a price point) but definitely get something with a flip down visor, they're awesome.

I use helmets with built-in sun shields, and they RAWK! Everybody has a reason why what they do is better. Oh well. :dunno Going through the Alps, in and out of tunnels, in and out of the shade of high peaks and steep cols convinced me that a built in sun shield is 100% the way to go, and I'm not going back. As to which brand, you're on your own.

So what do you have? Pros and cons?:)

I bought Scorpion 1000 on sale for 54 bucks. So far I like it more then my Shoe Rf1000. It fits very snugly, quieter, has greater field of vision. One thing is taking it of is a bit of a pita because the bottom is a bit too narrow. Although when wearing it, it fits well. Although to be fair I might have gotten it a size too small. I did try their 500 in the store, and it seemed that Medium was a bit too loose, and small on tighter side and with the same fit at 1000.

They have some gimicky air cushioning thing you can pump up for better fit. I am skeptical, and with fit on tighter side didn't try it.
