Helmets with a built in sun visor: suggestions

The thing about scorpion helmets is that they don't fit like any other helmets. Most sizes you're used to will either be too small or too big. My first helmet was a scorpion exo1000, man was I in for a shock after putting on a good fitting helmet for the first time. Sometimes I wish Scorpion wouldn't goof their sizes, because the exo1100 seems like a dang good helmet.

I picked up a GT-Air earlier this month, coming from an RF-1000 (with gold shield).

It is really nice not having to worry about swapping shields. I commute by moto, and hated having to carry a spare shield back and forth between home and office.

Fit is very similar to the RF. I wore a medium RF, wearing a medium GT-Air. The GT-Air feels a bit tighter on my head, but it's breaking in, hoping it'll end up as perfect a fit as the RF was (wore the RF for five years).

I also tried the Shark Speed-R, which is a great-looking helmet, very well made, and also has a built-in visor. Unfortunately it didn't fit my head. It was quite a bit cheaper (on sale) than the GT-Air.

Dan, you mentioned you like your Shoei and are interested in the Schuberth. I have a "Shoei head" and the Schuberth didn't fit right for me, so that may rule it out for you as well.

I'm currently wearing a Neotec most of the time. The sun shade is awesome. I used to always carry two shields and it was a pain having to stop and switch. Now, I just pop it down when I need it, leave it up the rest of the time.

Another Rf1000 with gold shield. Yep, I also carry the shield and it gets old. Glad you are happy with the Air, does it feel heavier to you as well?

Yeah, I also have a Shoei head. That is good to know. I am stopping by to try on an air tonight and will probably swing by Scuderia to try on a Schuberth. Although I have tried a few on before briefly and while they didn't hurt I wasn't super stoked on them. Those were all modular though. Maybe if I like the air enough I'll just grab it...

I came from an Arai Signet, which is oval/narrow and never figured a Shoei would fit as I read too many stories about a "Shoei head" fit.

The GT Air fit; albeit a much smaller shell, but it fit very well.

The only way to know if a helmet fits is to try it on. Don't rely on opinions.

So what do you have? Pros and cons?:)

While the helmet Nazis will revile me for this, I love my HJC. I'd like to try a Caberg. Maybe next summer during EuroBARF.

This.

have you considered a helmet with a peak? I know it's not what you're asking about but this is barf. :twofinger
Lately I've had to get to work when it's still dark, and when I leave work the sun is low. I've got a helmet with a dark smoke visor and an XD with a clear visor and the peak. I find I prefer the peak to the dark smoke visor. When the sun is low it works better than a dark visor. No visor to change, and sun protection when i need it. When the days get longer, I'll put a dark visor on the xd and maybe even take the peak off. You ride an adventure bike, may as well look the part.:laughing

Oh for sure. I will be going to try on one tonight. I wouldn't even think of buying a helmet without first having it on my head. Especially one I was using as a main helmet.

Yeah I have a dual sport helmet. I wear it occasionally, and the setup I have on that is dark visor and clear goggles (night/day combo). It works well for around town, but on any long trips it really wears on my neck after awhile. I know some peaks are better than others for that, but still I can do without it as a main helmet.

I had a Caberg Justissimo. I think they are Airoh now. Cool helmet. Way heavy though. And after a particularly wet winter of commuting the antifog started peeling off the inside of the visor and the antiscratch/glare peeled off the outside. I wouldn't recommend owning one. They're great new though. Quiet for a flip face.

This.

I also had an IS-16 that I really liked. Unfortunately, I crash tested it, and it worked quite well.

I just ordered an IS-17 to replace the IS-16.

Interesting discussion. I think different solutions are going to work for different folks, but for me, I reeeeeally like the Sun visor on my Shoei Neotech. I had a Scorpion EXO-1000 which worked pretty good, but the visor did not go down far enough, and the EXO-1100 doesn't fit the same. The AFX FX-100 I have works better than that one, but the tint isn't quite enough for me. Works well for everything but the real bright stuff like the low sunrise Winter sun. Very good Summer lid though. A really good bang-for-the-buck solution. I think the HJC's that Squidly has mentioned also fit this description. I have heard good things.

The Neotech is perfrect. Visor goes down far enough and is very effective in even the brightest Sun. I also find the mechanism extremely easy to use, even with a heavily gloved hand. And I have come to love modulars for that extra option to get some air! I have not tried the GT-Air yet, so I cannot comment on that one. The Neotech is fantastic, though. Try it first, because it deos not provide the same classic Shoei fit like the RF-1100 does. I had to make a few adjustments internally to make it better, but I was able to tweak it to my taste and again, the Visor is fantastic.

Another helmet I would consider is the AGV Horizon, if you do not care for Modulars. I tried one of these on and was very impressed by its fit, finish, visor, funtion and so on. It is reasonably priced as well.

I purchased an AGV Horizon Helmet with the retracting internal sun visor. I love how light it is and it is about as quieter than my Icon Alliance. So far quality is excellent, meaning nothing is getting lose or feeling like it is about to break.

I bought the GT air. Fits great. Needs to break in and I am installing my cardo etc and generally getting it sorted tonight. First ride with it tomorrow.:D

Aaaand I should have done this long ago. The helmet is WORLDS better than the RF 1000. It is much quieter, and the aerodynamics are amazing. I love the sun visor even though I haven't had a real use for it yet. :laughing I tested all the vents and all of them made me too chilly this morning. Real test needs to be in hot weather though. The whole helmet is just generally great and I'm very happy with the purchase.

I may add a full review after I have some more time with it.

Nice! Shoeis have always been good helmets, but their recent helmets are just awesome.

I expected some improvement, but I was really blown away by the amount. It is only one ride, but I actually had to check myself because I was doing 80 and didn't realize it. :laughing Honestly the buffeting never bothered me in my old Shoei, which is by far my quietest and buffets the least of my helmets. This one is in a different league altogether...

Of course I haven't owned any of the more expensive helmets besides the RF 1000 which is on the lower end of that range. As is this one come to think of it. :laughing
