Helmets with a built in sun visor: suggestions

The RF-1200 is worlds better than the RF-1000. Evolution of a product. Who knew?!

I get it. You love your RF1200. :laughing I couldn't be happier for you, really. I tried one on, unfortunately it did not have the feature I was looking for as referenced in the thread title: A built in sun visor. I know that feature adds some weight, but that coupled with the fact it seems a little more tuned for an upright position. They seem like the same quality and share features with the addition of the two I mentioned above for the GT Air.
 
For general tinting, I just wear sunglasses and when it gets dark, like when I'm riding on roads well covered and it gets dark, I simply push them down my nose so I can see over the sunglasses.

When the sun is glaring in my eyes, for example a low setting sun, I can put a strip of electrical or duct tape over the top 1" of the visor and it blocks out the glare effectively.

As a result, I can run any type of helmet.


Exactly.
And if you wear corrective lenses anyway, a good pair of optically correct lenses, and that strip of tape is a perfect solution...seems like it anway.

We had them back in NY many, MANY years ago, and I've been bugging the helmet reps at every bike show and race since I moved to CA! :blah

Shoei finally came up with it, yay -- I showed it to the Arai rep at the last bike show. Hope they come up with one soon!!

p.s. I have tried a Scorpion helmet a while back, and loved the dark flip-down shield, as well as the fact that I could NOT fog the visor up no matter how hard I tried!!! :thumbup (it was just a tad noisy for my preference)

Congrats, Revnort. A good outcome is what we were shooting for, and it sounds like that has been achieved. Excellent! I believe I am going to have to investigate this GT-Air thingy at some point in the near future! The video breakdown I saw on it looked impressive.
 
I wasn't a believer in the built-in sun visor shade thingy until I tried one for commuting. Hot damn it's so convenient!
 
Owners of the GT Air. Does the visor not have an option to crack it open like the neotech? I was going to buy a neotech, but on top of not being able to fit my beard in it, the visor's smallest opening is HUGE and I thought it was a deal breaker.

I don't know anything about a Neotech, but w/the GT Air, the first notch from fully closed visor provides for about an inch of opening (if that is what you are asking).

My Neotec has a notch of sorts that cracks the shield a tiny bit—I just give it a little pull upwards. It's not the setup the Shoeis used to have, with the little lever, but it accomplishes about the same thing—which is to say not much.

Also, you must have a massive beard. I've got a pretty sizable chinbeard and have no issues—it just folds back against my neck.

It appears that the GT-Air has a similar but slightly improved solution. If I had any one bitch about the Neotech, that would be it. There is NO city position and It is annoying. Shoei dropped the ball there. I am in the process of crafting a home made solution, like little rubber stops that will keep the visor cracked just a few millimeters.

Like Surj, My beard doesn't cause any issues either. So you must be rockin a big ol' beard dude! :laughing

It let's in more air then you'd think though especially with the chin vent. You close it first then pop up a tiny bit. The first detent is huge and like an inch. It's not even really a setting. I've just looked closely at mine. From fully locked down you can pop the left side and the visor distorts a little bit as that side pops off the seal but at least on mine, there's no visible space between the visor and the seal. Also, the ratchet mechanism on both sides of the helmet remains in the fully closed position.

Having tried it on the road in very heavy rain, just cracking the visor did nothing to stop my spectacles from misting. I then had to open it to the first notch which even on a new 2013 GS which has good aerodynamics, resulted in my spectacles becoming covered in raindrops.

I suspect that you might be able to get some airflow in the bottom of the visor when it's in that unlocked position if you were to loosen off the pivots on both sides and move them slightly forward on the shell. However, I think that might well compromise the seal at the top of the visor and allow the ingress of rain onto its inside face.

I had been having good results wearing my Shoei Hornet with the Scorpion VX-17 Breath Box mod However, I bought a new lid and went to pick up my new GS on a filthy day and ended up struggling to see where I was going at 30 mph.

I was one of the pre-production testers for Fog-Tech and the sample I had was one of the bad ones which precipitated so I didn't get good results - nice guy though, we had some good e-mail correspondence about his Scottish antecedents.

After the rain induced blindness episode, I thought I'd try it again and went to the local Airsoft paintball shop and bought some of the Fog-Tech wipes which were pretty expensive. None of the motorcycle shops here appear to have heard of the stuff. I've found that it works quite well and I'll be looking for a bottle of it soon. Having said that, I'm reminded now of why I went to wearing goggles holding RX prescription inserts with my Hornet.

I did talk to my dispensing opitician about plastic spectacle lenses with an anti-fog coating and although they're available, they're still just a bit too expensive for me to consider them.

Humm, it has been just the opposite for me..and I lived within a stones throw of the ocean at Monterey bay, doing the daily commute on hwy 1.

When I'd buy a helmet I'd first check the face shield stay put when open just enough to flow air...If it passed that test then the fit test came next.

And I wear glasses all the time.
 
Rain'll come in thru the crack though. It's nice to have a helmet that won't fog up yr glasses even when the face shield is totally shut. My Noaln N90 isn't perfect, but it's the best at that that I've owned so far.

I'm really hoping they STOP putting these internal sun visors in helmets. I wear glasses and I only wear flip-up helmets. No one seems to make a flip-up without a built in sun visor any more.

The built in sun visor is either too big or too small. If it's in the right place for a certain riding position at a certain time, it's in the wrong position when one or both change. It is prone to scratching and generally cannot be replaced. The tint is either dark or too light.

I prefer to wear sunglasses in my helmet. The internal sun shade is dumb and only adds cost/weight.
