Is chivalry really dead?

People need to stop shitting on an entire generation that they helped create, and have greatly profited from.

Kids didn't just collectively wake up and say "Gee, I think I'll turn to shit today." They're a byproduct of the world in which they live... and they weren't the ones who created that world.

Think I was pretty specific not to shit the entire generation, just the ones that are causing the problem.

You gotta be good at playing the victim these days, it's a very effective strategy and takes away any need of taking ownership or being accountable for your own actions. :twofinger

I hold the door for people (men and women), am polite, you know common courtesy. I'm so glad I missed the whole online dating thing though, it sounds awful.

Yeah, I looked into the online dating thing back in the late 90's, early 2000's.

It was a sick joke back then, tons of fake/old pictures, lots of fake women and the real ones were looking for their ideal men, which in the Bay area meant high paying job, owned home, under 40, etc. The few women I talked to were desperate and for a very good reason.

An entire generation is playing the victim? :laughing

Like I said.. people need to stop shitting on "millennials" as a generation. Rather, let's just start calling out the few bad apples for what they are. We will all be better for it.

Expectations in dating changes with society and with technology. To what the OP originally said, I (28 years old) wouldn't even think to offer to pick up someone on a first date from online dating. It's not because I don't want to be courteous, In fact, quite the opposite. I think especially with online dating, the first date is more about feeling each other out than anything else. I don't want the girl I'm with to feel trapped into the situation if for some reason the date goes poorly. So, while I am happy to go to a nice restaurant and pay for the meal and all of that, I don't even think to offer to pick her up on the first date (Second date on, this obviously changes)

Define chivalry in a way that doesn't mean putting women on a pedestal.

^^This applause.gif

I don't own a car. Am I automatically less chivalrous than a man who offers to pick up a lady on their date than someone who offers to meet them there?

She owns a car. Is she less than chivalrous for not offering to pick me up? Is Chivalry for only men, or can women participate?

Otherwise you're just literally making up the meaning of words. Either you're for equality, treating everyone the same, or you're looking to be putting the opposite sex on a pedestal regardless of what they want.

I think what the OP was thinking of was Common Courtesy, but that term seems to be largely unused in the Bay Area these days.

I think people get stuck on the term because of what it means/t

Exactly. It means, in their mind, whatever they want it to mean. And in its strict, textbook definition, it doesn't apply to anything these days, unless you're a sexist.

And that is just fine. But remember, while is is courteous to offer to pick someone up, not-offering is not not-courteous.

Feminism killed chivalry if you want the honest truth

It helped kill manners and common courtesy for sure
Fake courtesy is worthless. Worse because bad guys hide behind that lie.

With all the exposure of predators and all the 'good' guys that turned a blind eye to it, you could have figured out that women got tired of fake 'chivalry'.

Don't blame women because they stopped taking men's crap. Get a grip and get some genuine manners.

Where's the "holding the door" thread or posts we had a conversation about awhile back? Reli, was that a sub thread? I remember you and I debated on it...

If I hold the door for anyone and they don't say "thank you", I shout "YOU'RE WELCOME".

Also, I hold it for three people max, after that, fuck you, I'm not a doorstop.

Chival this. :twofinger

- Holding the door for people is a courtesy meant for all
- If you hold the door for everyone you have common courtesy
- If you hold the door solely for women for being woman you are being a dick, not a knight

End of story

Im liking the sound of this. About time the woman picked the man up.
And bring a snack, small pizza or beef stew that can be warmed up later.

Honking outside someone’s house for any reason deserves a crowbar to the face.

Hahahaha!

Ummmm....even if chivalry applies to both sexes, they're putting the opposite sex on a pedestal. Let's also not forget where chivalry was invented and the raw definition: a soldiers code of honor and not just towards women...but only practiced by men. What it's become in 2018 is anyone guess...we kinda just make up what we want words to mean as they can fit the situation to win our debates.

That's why it's entirely meaningless except for fedora wearing neckbeards.

I imagine you're the type who holds the door for people when they're 20+ feet back, and enjoy watching the awkward speed walk up to the door so they don't leave you holding for too long. :laughing
