Keto anyone?

Good thread. Im here to get some low/no carb meals ideas.

I’d like to learn more about people’s keto experiences, such as their:

Appetite
Daily energy
Workout energy/strength
Mood
Overall health?
Stay in keto forever or cycle?
Etc.

Diet is so powerful and underrated, we still have so much to learn, but the biggest thing is for each individual to see what works for them.

I lost 180 lbs doing keto. So, it definitely worked for me!
My original goal was to loose 100 lbs in 1 year, and hopefully get my high blood pressure under control (I was on multiple daily meds).
I ended up loosing 100 lbs in 6 months, 150 lbs in 1 year, 180 lbs in 16 months. I now take NO meds!
I've kept that weight off for an additional year by not eating anything with added sugar or veg/seed oils (which basically eliminates all prepared or packaged foods).
I am now in maintenance mode... more "low carb" (60-80 gram/day) than keto (less than 20 gram/day).
It is my opinion that anyone that claims that it doesn't work, just isn't doing it properly... but that's just my opinion.

Outstanding job! :thumbup

Great story, but you also put in a bunch of exercise, as well.

Still, I'm sure you're much happier, get much better response from people you meet and will live a much longer, healthier life. :thumbup

On the keto, I've been around for too long to not wonder if this is just yet another passing fad.

The Mr. has some challenges that led us to try Keto briefly. I just couldn't get on board with all of the fat. I understand ketosis, and understand that the diet is a short term thing, but it's turned into a cult movement/lifestyle with some folks to justify eating their body-weight in bacon. ...which, to be clear, I'm not inherently opposed to, but it creates other problems. :laughing

Bravo!!!!! Keto definitely works. I think it's a bit extreme during weight loss mode but transitioning to, and keeping up, with "maintenance mode" seems like a plan for success long term. Good job mang, keep it up!

I really should try this my weight has slowly crept up over the past 10 years or so from around 205 to 245 currently and the older I get, the less my knees appreciate that.

I know several people who've had success with Keto and or Intermittent Fasting so I have no doubt it works. I suspect my biggest challenge would be carbs as I have a love affair with all things pasta, and also beer. Sounds like (research needed) I could probably dedicate a month to Keto and then just focus on low carb / portion control afterwards.

I wouldn’t even try to lose fat unless I stopped drinking alcohol of any kind. It’s the worst thing ever for body composition. JMO.

But yea, it just becomes a lifestyle. I like your idea of keto/very low carb to start off. Portion control is good, but don’t be afraid to eat a huge meal if you ate light the previous meal or previous few days etc.

There’s a lot of little tricks to lower blood sugar, while eating fruit;
Eat your meat first.
Then eat your salad/greens.
Then eat a piece of fruit if you want.
Maybe a little rice/potato especially if working out.

The meat /other food will help lower/stabilize your blood sugar as you eat the fruit. Carbs might not be essential but it would be a shame to avoid a little fruit.

Adding stimulants to an already overtaxed sysem is really asking for trouble.

If rtmac’s success story isn’t motivation enough, I can’t imagine what would be.

If you are just exercising PROPERLY, even a low carb/mofified keto works quite fast.

What might happen? Are you a real MD?

There aren't many people in the world that I would fully trust with a health and fitness regime, DrSwade is one of them.

So back when I was doing keto years ago I really enjoyed how I felt. I had energy for days, I was racing bicycles, didn't measure calories just tracked general macros.

My downfall was listening to some other guys in the races and going back onto carbs, also I met my wife, and wining and dining is difficult. but after i got back on carbs it was like getting addicted to a drug, i would get really hungry, run out of energy, it was terrible for how i felt compared to being in keto.

However, beer, rice, French fries and the like are awesome! I can't say I didn't really enjoy consuming those things but I don't miss them as much as i miss being able to fit into my leathers.

Oh and I drink while on Keto, just spirits, mostly bourbon.

Ideally I would like to stay in keto forever but the times where it's difficult is when going out or on vacation.

I don't eat fruit. Some veggies are good, some aren't.

If you want an idea as to my meals an average day is like:
Breakfast: 1 egg, 1 sausage link, with a cheese stick(usually not that hungry)
Lunch: 1 can of tuna mixed with mayo and spices (sometimes ill eat another cheese stick if I'm hungry)
Dinner: some pork shoulder, creamed kale, cauliflower mac n cheese

My hunger level are so much lower in general, I sometimes skip meals cause I'm just not hungry. I also never feel like that ravenous hunger that I would get when i was on carbs.

I haven't gotten into it since they called it keto.

Yrs ago, I tried Weight Watchers and got down to a certain weight. Then I tried Atkins and lost about 8 lbs more. But I sure felt lethargic and my joints hurt a lot. That pretty much put me off it.

I think the greatest value is just in educating yourself about what you are putting into yer bod. Each of these diets taught me about things, mostly things are too oily, too sweet and too salty.

Never gone back to white rice and very restrained about white bread for example. The whole wheat pasta only but generally not wanting to have pasta as meal choice.

I'm still a fat guy but I eat healthy, just a little too healthily.

And what really sucks is that as a geezer, you just eat less and less but your body gets more inefficient as processing and such no matter how much exercising. I think to truly lose weight, I'd have to go vegan or something, like all those insufferable people I don't like to be around. Not all of them of course but I have had the misfortune of being around a few people my age and the entire conversation is about their food. It's nuts.

Never claimed to be a physician. Not that many of them know fokal about nutrition anyway, or fitnessfor that matter.

But let’s look at this then. Gaining 60lbs in a short amount of time whether muscle or fat means that all of the body’s other systems cannot possibly have kept up with what is necessary to support this new weight. Although the body constantly seeks homeostasis, it just can’t keep up. So what it does is andjusts hormones that trigger sort of a “trying to keep up” mode for everything.
Like the heart. The heart works harder to keep the blood flowing tothis new tissue. The vascular system isn’t prepared either so blood pressures creep up too. Insulin levels are effected as are every other hormone.
So what is it that stimulants, especially increased amounts do to the body? Increased heart rate, blood pressure, etc. as well as overpinging the nervous system. You don’t need to be an expert to guess what all this adds up to.

Are carbs “bad”? No. But in the amount that the average Joe consumes, hell yes they are bad.
But as it has been said, all carbs are not created equal. Nor are fats or proteins.
The biggest issue I experience is that people try to wing it with diets and exercise they find on the internet. It can be a great source of info but like all internet stuff, take it with a truckload of salt.
Ahhhh, salt. Another topic very few folks seem to understand.

Did they do an A1C on your blood panel?

I tried keto, briefly. I found that it takes a lot of discipline to maintain keto (or any other kind of diet for me), if I had food discipline I wouldn't have gotten fat.

I've been on Intermittent Fasting for 5 years now. I lost probably about 100lbs total. I say probably because I don't actually know how fat I got because at some point I just stopped stepping on the scale. Lost about 80lbs in the first year and have been shaving off 5lbs a year or so after that. I'm officially "normal weight" (according to the BMI) now.

Cured my Type 2 diabetes while I was at it. I went from an A1C of 12 in 2012 and my last A1C two months ago was 4.9. I was shooting up 130 units of insulin daily in 2015 and was on Glipizide also. After one year of IF, I ended up throwing away the insulin and needles and stopped taking oral meds.

Now I eat whatever I want (as long as it's within my 8-hour eating window). Everything is fair game. I can't eat as much as I used to, physically there's just nowhere for it to go, I get queasy when I overeat.

We get fat because we eat too much of the wrong foods, too much of it, and too often. Those first two are a given and everybody knows about it. What most people don't know about is the time factor. If you want to eat garbage, you gotta give your body more time off from eating (ie fasting). Problem is our society has the whole "3 squares a day with snacks in between" so brainwashed into everybody that when I mention I only eat two meals a day and make sure I go at least 16 hours without food, people are horrified ("OMG that can't be healthy for you").

Did you follow a specific plan or diet?

I bought 90 day supply of KetoChow Shakes protein powder. Each shake includes 4oz of heavy cream and like 10-12oz of water. The flavors I got are great and damn it's filling.

I need to get back to eating between 10-6pm and doing the shake at 10am.

I need to loose 20-30lbs this summer. I just got my home gym dialed in but of course over taxed my back paddle boarding sitting down and need to rest.

Glad you got your results. I am not trying to convert anyone to keto especially if they already have something that's working for them. I'll sometimes fast for 4-5 days, good to give the system a rest. Haven't done that in a while.

Of all the diets I've tried Keto has just been the easiest for me to stick to, only time it sucks is when i have to go out to eat
