Keto anyone?

Did you follow a specific plan or diet?

Yes, I did a very specific, hard-core plan. Keto is all or nothing, you can't "kind of" do it. You either get into nutritional ketosis, or you don't.

My first 30 days was full carnivore diet... meat, eggs, dairy only. No veg or fruit of any kind. I also started IF at the same time, I eat nothing before noon (except a coffee w/ heavy whipping cream) and I eat nothing after 8:00pm. This I still do this, with very few exceptions. I lost 30 lbs the first month (a lot was water weight, I know).
*Note, I had already quit drinking alcohol a couple years prior.

After the first month I started adding in Avocado and green leafy veg (nothing that grow's under the ground level).

After another month I added a limited amount of nuts (mostly macadamia, almonds, pecans... no peanuts) and about 1 cup of raspberries and or blueberries a few days a week. However, peanut butter is my kryptonite, so now I do indulge in a small jar of all natural PB and make it last a week.

I felt like shit for about 3-4 weeks, very weak and lethargic. But I was not going to quit and that slowly went away as I became fat adaptive (able to burn fat as energy)

I did very little exercise in the first 6 months, other that 2-3 mile walks. When I started to add in work outs, it most definitely slowed down the weight loss (it's a combination of muscle gain, and stressing the system)... but the weight loss slows down anyway. I was loosing 5-6 lbs a week, then 2-3, then 1-2... but in 16 months I never had a single week that I didn't loose at least 1 lb.

I was never really hungry. I routinely had 6 egg, sausage and cheese omelets for lunch. I did, and still do, eat huge dinners. My average daily calorie intake is about 2800-3600 calories, but carbs were under 20 grams... now 60-80 grams.

I always get asked "was it easy?" NO, IT WAS REALLY FUCKIN HARD!
Habits are always hard to break... but it was worth it. I learned the difference between being "hungry" and having low blood sugar. I'd probably never actually been hungry before in my entire life. The food I eat now is much more enjoyable, and I would never go back to eating crap again.

Major take away's-
Convenience and low cost is the enemy of nutrition. If I don't have the time to prepare and eat a high quality meal... I'll skip it.
Life doesn't revolve around food. I'm only interested in food that tastes great AND is nutritious now. Food is no longer my hobby.

The humans always amuse me. I try not to volunteer any info now, without being asked, because most people have no idea what they're talking about when it come to nutritional ketosis. I have had multiple occasions when people I've know for years did not even recognize me... I had to tell them who I was! And within a few minutes of telling me how great I look, they're telling me how keto is just a fad and it doesn't really work. :laughing

Two of the biggest things that ensure failure are not meal prepping and calling what you are doing a “diet”.

Every client I have that has difficulty reaching goals eventually admits being lazy when I corner them. If one is serious about a program, the need a way to take food with them everywhere.
I schedule my errands around meals, especially if I am in contest prep mode. I drink my shake then go shopping etc., bringing my next meal with me. If I am gone over two hours, I eat it. If longer, I take two meals.
Once you establish a routine of meal prepping, it’s second nature.
If you don’t do this you will ABSOLUTELY eat something crappy or at least not within nutritional goals because you will be hungry.

As far as calling your food intake a “diet”, using that word makes it become a “thing”. It needs to be considered simply the way that you eat.
When I was eating vegan, I wasn’t “a vegan”. It was simply the way I eat.
Now that I eat the way I do, the only time I label it is when people ask me how I eat, so I say “modified keto” because that is the best way to describe it. Under 90g of carbs per day (fiberous carbs excluded from the count).
I weigh 220lbs +/- and this works for me.
It may seem silly to anyone that calling this a “diet” could harbor failure but for some, once that word leaves your vocabulary, it all seems to “click” for most people.

I almost never put normal folks (non-bodybuilders) on strict keto. I always include some starchy carbs. It is much easier and almost always more sustainable. Even a wee amount of sweet potatoes seems to increase success.
One last thing, decide if you are going to go on a diet or do an actual lifestyle change. The latter means long term success, improved health and quality of life. Too many people think that quality of life involves or even revolves around food.
I constantly hear “I like my pizza too much…”
Really? More than your grandchildren crawling all over you? Or your wife’s smile?

I eat what I want when I want, including drinking. The thing is that I want the unhealthy things much less.

Problem is our society has the whole "3 squares a day with snacks in between" so brainwashed into everybody that when I mention I only eat two meals a day and make sure I go at least 16 hours without food, people are horrified ("OMG that can't be healthy for you").

I don't even think we should eat every day. I'm going to try a one meal every other day, starting after a 5 day water fast.

I mean are we talking red baron's or Pizza from Naples?

The water fasts are really good to do IMO, really makes you put hunger into perspective. I will say that after like day 2 or 3 you'll have superhuman levels for food smell senses.

OP, you say your blood work looks good but did they do hormones too? Physicians rarely order these.

They weren't ordered but I would imagine I had elevated cortisol levels from stress but that's purely my own conjecture.

Bodyfat increases estrogen and vice versa. Every new client I take on getsthese checked if they are over 40. If their initial pics look to me like they have low testosterone and/or high estrogens, I also request it.
This is a highly overlooked factor.

That explains the milk

That explains the milk

Speaking of which, considering all of the GOMADs I have seen over the years, I was shocked to find out how much sugar was in Cow Milk.

It is weird to me that Milk is not Keto friendly.

As I was stuffin my face, I looked up the cheeez stick I was eating. Perfectly keto friendly. Something about calcium makes cheez better than butter. Not sure about milk itself. Guess I'll celebrate with a funsize Snickers.

lowfat milk is even worse because all the fat has been removed, the fat satiates you of course but since it's all removed lowfat milk is basically a soda.

Yeah, cheese is apparently good to go, I am assuming when it ferments the cultures must eat up the sugars, but raw milk is carbo loaded.

This is something I need to ponder. When I was in Azores, I was on islands that have more cows than people, yet you can't buy fresh milk anywhere. Most goes to make their great cheezes. The only milk is that irradiated stuff in the block containers. I'm sure it goes back to days before cars and roads and such but still, compared to Calif, it was a shock to not see fresh milk in a store.

Maybe they were doing me a favor....

When i work out, or do a really hard day of yard labor etc, I crave milk very badly, especially late that night. I think it's just thirst but I do drink a ton of water. I can't figure it out. But even the 1% is probably not helping the muffintop.
(posted before seeing immediate post above about lowfat but I don't drink soda either except as mixers in cocktails)

heavy cream in moderation is usually okay for your coffee or to cook with for like a curry or something

LOL, well, Soda has about 3x the carbs that milk does, but still. You could just as easily have been craving the protein or the list of other nutrients it contains.

You reckon milk is intended to be the sole source of food for mini-beasts, so it make sense it would contain a wide variety of nutrients and energy.

i think the calorie count is roughly the same for milk vs soda for liquid vol but obviously milk has some more nutrients than soda. The fat content increases the calorie content to make it on par with soda and the fact that your body will prefer to burn the carbs vs fat means the milk fat goes into storage and unless you burn all the sugar energy from the milk the remaining calories form the milk sugars also go into fat storage.

SO cheese is Keto friendly huh? Eating it with a salty cracker is obviously not, but I can probably get by on cheese and cured meats alone. Mmmm prosciutto.
