Lagunitas Sucks!

Sonoma, happy hour at 'the lodge' on weekends, starts a 11am I think. $3 a pint for pliny. Lushes UNITE!!

The close proximity of Russian River Brewery and Lagunitas, then Bear Republic further up the road, makes the Sonoma 101 corridor some kind of ale central. We are very lucky to have these treasures. I think they should get together and create a regional approach to tourism the way the wine growers have to encourage their craft and draw attention to the happy coincidence or confluence. Maybe they already have, I dunno...

Of the three, I think Lagunitas has the most complex and perhaps adventurous brews. Russian Rivers brews, to me, are a bit more pure but delicious. The purity of Pliny the Elder makes a statement in that way. It's a super definitive taste, kinda like going to church for IPA. My favorite there is Blind Pig, which has a bit less bitterness and rounder flavor. And Bear Republic, ah, if you can get Racer X when they are making it there....yum. Otherwise I am always happy with Racer 5.

Hope that wasn't about me, but taste is so subjective....

I am a huge fan of Pliny the Elder. :staRang

Yeah, me too, even though I feel like I am simultaneously eating a grapefruit and chewing on a pine tree when I drink it...

That was my first thought when trying Pliney the Younger for the first time last year; floral and citrusy/grapefruity.

Drinking high IBU ales like that are akin to eatin really hot foods and craving more. IPA's actually dull your taste buds, so food isn't going to taste as strong and either does the beer. I drink Pliny with caution for that reason. And without food. Just to enjoy it.

I don't know how they figure Lagunatis Sucks is a "replacement" fro Brown Shugga, not even close......I actually scorred 2 cases of Brown Shugga that were "hidden" at a local liquor emporium, hoarding and rationing it, 'till the Hairy Eyeball is released in a few weeks. Trying to drown my sorrows after selling a bike this weekend...............:(

(hope yer enjoying it Phil!) :thumbup

I might stop at the Yard House before this bike night thing to see if they have it on tap :party

Just had a Pliny the Younger at the Lodge. They are doling it out in 10oz glasses these days... Boo. Other places are doing the same thing I am hearing... Lame. It was good though.

They do that "little glass at pint price" thing at Lagunitas too. I can't remember which brew it was, but its obviously one with higher alco content, which is the basis of the policy.

The irony is that I had the same ale at Creek Monkey in Martinez and got a full pint just like every other selection.

I really don't like the policy because usually, if I go there for a meal, I want a full pint of ale to work as I eat. Somebody must have ruined it for the rest of us...

PS. Bubba, did you have to stand in line to get in and have the Younger? Last year, when they were pouring it, I bailed at an hour wait and ended up at the other alehouse in SR, got a decent meal and okay beer.. I'm kinda mad at them for good; I think its a bit ridiculous to limit their output though I understand the whole buzz and sensation aspect of it. My life is too short to stand outside on a Santa Rosa sidewalk for an hour or more for any beer.

^ if you like paying too much for average IPA, that's the king.

Condescend much?

90 minute IPA, although not my favorite IPA is a pretty solid beer. And if you knew how much the hops cost for this and most heavy duty IPAs were, you'd rethink that statement.

By the way, 90 min IPA is considered an imperial IPA, meaning much more ingredients per bottle. Meaning more cost per bottle. Why do you think Dogfish Head's beers cost so much? They are all 10-11% alcohol. That extra alcohol comes from malt, which costs money. It has to be balanced with extra hops, which also cost money.

no, i've never tried that brew. does it have lots of exxpensive esoteric ingredients for discerning beer snob palates?

And there you go again. So let me summarize. You have never tried that beer, but you feel qualified to state that it is overpriced and mediocre? You my friend, are making a name for yourself as one of the most pretentious people on this forum. You have an opinion, almost always uninformed and based on how far up your ass your head is at the time, on everything. And in nearly every case, it comes across condescending and douchy.

I repeat, condescend much?

Don't bother, you just made my ignore list.

Please explain further. What exactly do I not know about brewing beer and the cost of ingredients? Considering I just bought two bags of grain and about ten pounds of hops and brew at least once or twice a month, I feel pretty qualified to discuss the cost of brewing. And I know for a fact that Dogfish Head uses a shitload of expensive hops (yes some are twice or three times the cost of others) in their beers. Additionally, the more malt you add, the more the beer costs.

But heyyyyy, you know it all and compare these ales to your Old English 800, because all beers should be according to your bad taste, and those uof us that like something ales are pretentious. Right? Seems to me, your the one telling people what they should or shouldn't drink based on your "truth".

Please describe your background and knowledge of the brewing process.

oh now you think you've got better taste than me cause i'm black?

that's great- i'm very proud of you that you're a brewmaster, but you need to relax, son. all i'm saying is that lagunitas and harpoon are the best tasting IPA's to my special li'l taste buds...you don't need to be friggin charlie parker to appreciate the saxophone.

dogfish head is just fine, and i like the 60 better than the 90, but i like other ones, that happen to be cheaper, better. change tampon.

I love this one.
