Let's be honest, who truly rides ATGATT?

I always make sure I have on clean underwear.:cool

*puts on flame suit*

I have two riding outfits-

1. Long-sleeve shirt/sweater, Jeans, vest, gloves, helmet - when i'm doing a quick ride to the market or gas station and wont be riding hard.

2. ATGATT (boots, full suit, gloves, helmet, braces. - when i plan on going over 35mph.

I know that I should be ATGATT on any occasion, and I do try to do that, but its hard to justify 20 minutes of gearing up for a 3 minute ride to grab an onion for dinner. In those cases, I cut corners.

I never ride ATGATT, in fact in mexico, I was in a wifebeater, shorts, and flip flops on the R1..oh and no helmet. But we only rode down the street to the local bucks to pose lol only time im fully suited is when I was on the track...obviously :cool:teeth

Can we all at least agree that ATGATT means all the time, and if you are not doing it all the time calling ATGATT is just silly.

If you are only wearing all the gear some of the time, you cannot say I am ATGATT at certain times only.

If you are just talking about all the gear in certain instances, just say ATG if you need to abrev. Clearly it isn't all the time, in terms of riding ATGATT your answer would be I am never ATGATT since there are some time I am not wearing all my gear.

:p :twofinger

Still doing ATGATT. Pants, jacket, helmet, airbag vest, gloves, boots. Also takes all decision making out of the process.

12 pages of back & forth ! :rant Free will & free choice but one should also consider caring & love for one's loved ones.

SAFETY first ! It's not just your skin & your safety but also think about your family and friends.

Ultimately it's your call. Does it matter what other thinks, perceives or how you look if your life will be saved and bodily injury(ies) will be tremendously or 100% reduced when all works out well for you in an accident ???? Does the Reaper care ?!?!?

I ride ATGATT. It's a choice & a decision. It's common sense really that BARF promotes ATGATT, more so for Newbies, for obvious reasons, who would benefit the most of it.

At the end of the day, if a rider thinks & decides to be squidly : it's his/her choice to increase their chance of being hurt.

>>> This thread has inspired me to take my airbag vest out and use it instead of protecting air sitting around !!!!

And yup : ATGATT = full face helmet, armored jacket, armored riding pants, (or 1pc leathers), gloves and boots. I prefer leather over textile. Raining days : an older hand-me-down 1pc stitch that needs to be nikwaxed but I have been putting a waterproof 1pc riding raincoat over it.

And YES, we're talking about commute to work : white collar / professional dress code >> ATGATT over work attire !

Ranting aside, I actually concluded that if you keep at it, you'll reach a point when you know which ATGATT combo you opt for on which ride before you head out:

  • a longer ride when you'll push yourself & your bike a bit
  • daily commute with high risk of accident at anytime
  • errands runs
  • fun / joy rides
  • rainy days and hostile weather conditions
  • a perfect riding weather day
  • rallying, trips
  • track days

My first maiden ride on my first bike, an un-leveled road at dusk >> a wobble which I recovered but bang my shin on some metal part >> a scar on my left shin & a hole in the jeans.

A recent get off during my morning commute at low delta cuz some young idiot cager cut me off right in front of me into the HOV lane >> I walked from that with just bruises on the left foot which would have even minimized had I worn my still good A* S-MX5 boots instead of my old Joe Rocket just leather but kevlar boots.

I am ATGATT. Only commute four miles each way to work and it takes me almost as long to gear up as my commute is. Price for admission in my opinion.

Do you wear your seatbelt all the time? Even just up the street? I do, and I don't see the difference between that and riding gear. If I don't feel up to putting all my gear on, I don't want to go riding enough :p

I always wear a seatbelt. Difference is that if I am going to dinner, or going shopping for clothes I don't have to bring the seatbelt and car into my destination with me.

Which begs the question, why go to dinner and shopping for clothes on a bike? Meaning, if there's risk involved, why not minimize risk?

My main mode of transportation is a motorcycle because of it's convenience in the urban environment of SF.

If you are asking about minimizing risk, why ever ride a motorcycle? Not riding a moto is the less risky option in all scenarios.

It's not quite my main mode of transportation, but if I know life-saving/booboo-reduction gear is inconvenient at the store, restaurant, etc, that's what Muni, Uber, Taxi, cage, walk is for.

--and a time to every purpose under the heaven

Some people have locking topcases for their gear. Some people live a block from a restaurant or a store. Not everyone's the same, if you hadn't heard.

How do people go ATGATT in 100F+ weather, especially out here in Sacramento? Why aren't cops who ride motos ATGATT?

^^ mesh gear. If you've got money, mesh kevlar gear.

As for cops in California, they don't because of tradition and their c.o.s (commanding officers).

Arguably smarter departments outfit their motors accordingly.

I do! I commute SF to Palo Alto tho, so feel naked unless it's all on me. I wear "nice office clothes" under the stich and keep dress shoes at the office.

I also wear http://www.johnsonleather.com/forcefield_back_protector_PRO_SUB_4.htm
underneath the stich as well.

Still need to upgrade the boots.

I also consider a camera (GoPro, etc) to be part of ATGATT.

No, I thought of that, but it comes with back and waist straps which are very very comfy. So I just wear it as a backpack. I can't even feel it there - aligns with my back. It does look a little bulky (like a turtle), but I don't really care about how it looks.

Did they make a custom pocket for your roadcrafter for this protector, or did you just rig velcro to it yourself?
