Mass shooting at San Jose VTA

We are just mostly half-anonymous yokels on the Internet, but grieve for the widow and you, Yak. A horrible thing has come to pass. Peace and condolences.

Kinda why I shared today’s journey, I debated it. These mass shootings are always so far away. They are other people. People I don’t know. Never thought I would personally know someone slain in one.

Thanks all.

Everyday the news is filled with bad stuff that has happened to "other" people.

I tell my familiy that those people probably thought it was just going to be a ordinary day like every other day until it wasn't.

When I came back to work from lunch, one of my tenants asked if I heard about the shooting to which I replied - Yes

He said his son works there but got off at 3:00am this morning.

I drove by on my commute to work before 6:30am this morning - its a drive that I make 7 days a week and now I will always remember what had happened there.

R.I.P to all :rose

i too drive by on my commute, though a bit later. so much hustle and bustle in that area with the freeways, airport, it's a railroad yard....hell the police station and superior court is a stones throw away. and the traffic whizzes by tomorrow same as it ever was. some lives stop. some continue. very weird

And yet people think I'm nuts for keeping a set of body armor (w/ AR500 Level IIIa plates) at work. I've lost count of the number of people who's seen my plate carrier and laugh/scoff at the idea. And there will be people reading this very thread that will laugh at this post. It's always somebody else until it's your turn.

The only thing stopping what happened at VTA from happening at my workplace is one security guard (24/7) manning the front gate and a sign (that nobody reads) saying weapons are prohibited on site. (And a very very large probability of odds that it won't.)

Is this body armor gonna stop me from dying if the unthinkable should occur here? No. Does it give me a better chance of surviving such? Yes. Is that chance worth $150? It is to me. YMMV

I think you and I have some very different ideas about how we approach risk and risk management in our daily lives, but on a fundamentally human level I've always suspected we hit closer together than some others. It's not my choice but I'm glad you're thinking a few moves ahead.

I'm so sorry for everyone who lost their lives in this shooting, especially those close to this community. I'm sorry, Yahoo.

Yea. Having a certain kind of people trying to kill me (because I'm a certain different kind of people) at a very young age tends to color one's view of the world. I accept that I think very differently compared to most folks, and I'm honestly OK with that. I'm glad that most people didn't have to grow up in the environment that I did.

The reality is I consider myself a safe, mostly sane, moral person and I surround myself with people who are the same. I try to limit my exposure to environments where I might find a lot of people who aren't my kind. The chances of me becoming victim to violent crime is, in reality, probably very very low. And yet that possibility exists, and as long as it does, I will always prepare and be ready for the worst case scenario.

Yikes. Too close to home. VTA does not exactly seem like a pressure cooker job.
Channel 7 quoted the shooter's gf saying that he was stressed out about the amount of work he was given and that he said that his boss mistreated him.

She also said he had some mental issues, "he's very up and down."

It's a tragedy all around.
