More Time To Get Fit - 2025

Thanks on the update. If you were gonna be in the chair longer, I was gonna ask Stanton if you could borrow his spare chair. Super light etc. let me know if you want me to axe him…

i appreciate it. this is a quickee 2 and it’s phenomenal. they cost about $1800 new but we picked this up at the hospice shop for much less. it’s been adequate for my “walks” and is much more maneuverable than the solid tire medline one i had first.

I am capable of maneuvering my stairs now and have done it a bunch of times. Going up the stairs is terrifying. Going down is way less scary because I can use the handrail and one crutch and feel stable.

Since I got back, I've managed two rolls out on my road. I went grocery shopping earlier this week and opted to use my own chair instead of those powered carts at stores, which have speed regulators and cooties. I have discovered I really, really, REALLY love polished concrete floors for rolling around. I can scoot around pretty quickly.

How's everyone else doing? I need my TTGF fix! @stangmx13 how is your recovery coming along?

I finally got appointments squared with Kaiser Ortho. I had a 2nd x-ray last Friday - day 14 after the break - to verify that I hadn't displaced the break. Everything was good. The doc gave me the all clear to ride indoors on the trainer and to start working on range of motion. She said that if I get sharp pains AND it's sore later that day, I tried too hard and did more damage. Final appt is Apr 8th, a few days before my next MTB race

My brain took all that amazing medical advice and heard "you'll be fine riding outside". So that Saturday - day 15 - I did a short 2hr ride outside and was fine. It hurt a little when accidentally pulling on the bars and not at all when pushing on them for descents, braking, or potholes. No harm done. I rode outside again Wed. Because it was a night ride, I stupidly wore a base-layer undershirt. It took me 10min to get that undershirt off. But that did more for my range of motion than any previous exercise :laughing. I'll probably do 4-6hrs outside this weekend and will ride the MTB again the following weekend.

The potentially-cracked rib has finally stopped bothering my sleep. It's still annoying, but only when getting in and out of bed.

Also, I've now done 10 sessions on an indoor trainer. I absolutely hate it and can't wait to be done with it. It's so sweaty. The RPE is higher. It's all too static. Ugh. Thankfully only 2-3 more.

Thank you for the update. I am glad your healing is cooperating with your racing schedule. :laughing

So quick update. I had a bad fever a few weeks ago and it seemed to last 3 days and then felt like shit went to urgent care and they said too late for anti-virals now but we think you have a sinus infection so will give you some antibiotics for that. fast forward about 2 weeks and after a coughing fit that caused me to strain an abdominal muscle I made an appt with my primary care. Would have gone to him first instead of urgent care but it was Mardi Gras week here that week so his office was closed. Saw PC and after talking for a bit he did a deep listen on my lungs and said we need to get an X-ray. So X-ray came in he looked at it and said possibly have mild case of walking pneumonia but pertussis is also going around. He prescribed Doxycycline which when I picked up from pharmacy they said take this with food and don't lay down for 30 minutes after taking. I was like huh? that's a new warning. Turns out someone took a pill once and laid down and the antibiotic is so strong it burned a hole in their esophagus. Who knew that could happen? So anyways now on day 6 and finally I feel so much better, cough is almost completely gone, I actually have energy again and I can sleep the whole night without coughing up a lung. Should be done with the antibiotics Sunday and plan to hit the gym again on Monday after a long 4 weeks away. I was feeling pretty good this week and wanted to go but wife talked me into fully recuperating and waiting a few more days.

^ Good job getting those sicknesses under control quick enough. It's so nice when the pneumonia antibiotics kick in and you can start to breathe better again.

I'm now telling myself I'm healed from the collarbone break, on day 33. My range of motion is about 95% and my strength is probably 75%. It's no longer affecting me day to day. I doubt the bone density is great yet, but it's definitely good enough for all my riding. I'll ask the doc next week if it's good enough for lifting.

I'm back to about 90% of my training volume and intensity. Last night I did a 3x5min VO2Max workout and crushed it. I set an all-time 5min power PR on the 3rd interval. I'm tempted to think that the 3 weeks of reduced training actually did me some good. My body has previously responded very well to longer breaks after some hard training. So maybe this will become a normal thing for me every few months.

Holy crap. Did a speed workout yesterday, basically a bunch of sprints between 50 and 100 meters and I am sore. Feels awesome and sucks at the same time.
