My R1200S blew its engine yesterday

On some of the German Boxer sites, they seem to check their valve train on a VERY regular basis...

My dad was going to buy a BMW and move away from Ducati because of the lower maintenance...then he went to MotoMarin and found the valve check/adjustment interval was identical to his...and only about $100 cheaper...so he still rocks the 4V ST4S and gets his free water at AMA/MotoGP races...

Why anyone would pay to have the valves adjusted on their BMW boxer is a mystery to me. I can change the oil, adjust the valves and sync the throttle bodies on my RT in less than 45 minutes including the removal of all the tupperware. It really is a piece of cake, and I'm nothing more than a shadetree mechanic.

^^^ I'd ask the same thing. All the parts are just right there hanging out for ya....

Good to know that the Boxer motors are easy to work on, yet here we are wondering why this motor went south so early...

I'm certain you've been to enough rodeos to know even perfectly maintained engines fail. It's all statistics.

I'll go so far to say the easier an engine is to maintain, the more likely it is to run without incident.

You always come out in these threads ripping on the roundel. This thread isn't any different.

Actually, I don't. And how is simply saying it's probably a mechanical failure ripping on anything? It's no more "ripping on he roundel" than all those who are saying he valve(s) burned (because the fuel injection system couldn't compensate for a slightly different exhaust). Mechanical failures happen on any machine. Sheesh..........

A full system without a catalytic convertor is more than a "slightly different exhaust" in my scheme of things.

Well, hopefully the OP will post back when the cause is finally known.

I dunno ... OP was tasting the S1000RR. Could have been subjected to a smokin' deal for a bike pre-ordered but original purchaser had to back out, non-disclosure agreement for the smokin' deal and sudden lack of concern over a blown motor on a slower bike ...

Keep an eye on NVP's profile. If an S1000RR mysteriously shows up there, we may never know what the cause is (and that's ok).

Good point my man. I was over at Moto Marin the other day and they were having a huge (and I do mean HUGE deep discounts) "STAYING IN BUSINESS" sale.

I was by there a few days later.

There was nothing left! :party Indeed they are still in business. (And I got the suggestion from Mrs. Boney to test ride the S1000RR.- I wonder if she knows what that means?!)

Good woman knows all. Happy man makes life sooooo easy peasy.

OP's brother here... (he's on vacation) -

The short story is that BMW NA is willing to cover the majority of the repair costs. Similar to my R1200gs motor failure, BMW is not giving any "reason" for the failure...

That's great.

But what's to say the left side won't fail (of undisclosed causes) just as the right side did. You'd think that would be a logical conversation to have...unless they're going to change out BOTH sides.

Well feck meh'................... :dunno

And I still think I'm gonna get a bimmer next! :teeth

Going to test ride a NEW R1200R tomorrow :banana

GAJ, Relax.

If it's related to the somewhat-known issue, it appears to be right side only.

Finally, considering he's not the original owner, and the bike is almost 4 years old and out of warranty, it sounds to me like they are going out of their way to make this right to him. They would be within their rights to tell him to pound sand, yet they are not.

Yeah, both sides, as the metal contaminated oil was shared.
