not sure that has anything to do with it.

california does have the most robust privacy laws in the country (at least as of 5 years ago - that’s when i left the field - others may have caught up by now). you skipped over the part he mentioned about ‘the expectation of privacy’. it’s a carve out in the law. when you’re out in ‘public’, there’s none (kinda the definition of ‘public’). with regard to selling information collected by those cameras, california law requires a data broker to offer opt out for anyone over 16, and opt in for anyone under that. it also provides for the right to sue in the event that provision in the law is violated. not perfect by any stretch, but the protection trajectory has at least been going in the right direction (in our state).
 
Not only is the surveillance state super gay, it also wants bulk food at discount prices. It is HUNGRY.

PBS Newshour did a piece on Flock last night. It’s scurry. Apparently surveillance cameras like flock are involved in 25% of solved crimes. One gal had the cops come to her house to arrest her for casing the area because the flock had flagged her for going down the same street 20 days in a row. On her way to work, through her own neighborhood. She had to provide car data including car camera footage of her drives and ring vid from her destination on a certain date and time to show that she was somewhere else at the time of a local burglary to prove that she was innocent. Yikes, my jalopy has no camera, better not use the same streets to go home daily & hope I look hot in prisonwear.
 
Incomprehensible amounts of data collected and analyzed by confidently incompetent humans means that the vast majority of us will be fine, save for an extremely unlucky few. Which really means.....nothing has changed.
