NFL 2018/2019 Thread

Odds Mullins is playing for NYG next year?

Because I make lemon vinegar out of lemons, I kept thinking of the following scenario: Shanahan goes back to Beathard because it's the "right" thing to do and indeed, Mullins becomes available. OTOH, Beathard might get beat up so bad again that he'd be called back into service and there would be no chance to buy him.

Being manly and procedural is pretty normal and CJ should go back to being starter based on the commitment made at beginning of season. Is it dishonorable to change horses? i don't know. Kind of reminds me of the conflicted feelings when Alex Smith was traded away for you-know-who.

It's a bit Pollyannish to think, oh, we go with Mullins now because he was so great against a very weak team and had the advantage of no film to study on him. But the problem is, everyone else on the team played really well last night and, I ask, why was that? Is it an intangible thing and does a black cloud follow Beathard around or what? It certainly did last year. That's proof enough for me.

Everybody loves Beathard but I'm afraid he is just bad luck. He was very crisp in some of the opening series this year and its naive to forget how well they played against the Packers...yet....

One game. Give Mullens three more and then we can talk again. For now I say it’s Beathards spot to lose and he shouldnt lose it due to injury. If he has another game like he did against the Cards I’m cool with a change. It’s not like either of them is going to supplant JG.

Right. Were you an Alex Smith guy? I can't remember I know one BARFer was pretty adamant about it.

But I wonder how the players feel about it. It seems like our millennial era is such that players feeeeeelings are way more regarded and troublesome, a la Odell Beckham and his tantrums. To me, it's seems like players are more visible with their commitments on any given Sunday anymore. In some basic, vague way, don't you think players want to feel good again, like they did last night? Why did Mullens get such good protection while CJ was beaten like a rag doll? I guess the answer is the weak Raiders pass rush, but one wonders. CJ has been at the helm for many losses counting last year. Do you wonder if there is a "been there done that" vibe?

Beathard holds onto the ball too long. Mullens does not. Same reason JimmyG was sacked way less than Beathard behind the same O-Line.

I agree, let Beathard have another game to heal. Let Mullins see if he was that good or the Raiders were that terrible. It is also pretty common for a QB to win on his first time out midseason, because the lack of tape makes it hard for a team to prepare.

See if Mullins can beta another bad team in the Giants, but my guys have a defense that is a damn sight better than the Raiders, who are the worst in the NFL in points allowed and 7th worst in Yards allowed.

Let Mullins see if he can beat a tougher defense with NYG, and then they have the Bye. C.J. should be healed up by the following week. If Beathard can't beat Tampa Bay, you let Mullins try to start again against Seattle.

Grap is still The Guy in San Jose, so if you can make Mullins a hot commodity (I mean, nobody thinks the UFA is going to be a franchise guy, right?) trade him for something juicy.

I was a Smith guy all the way up until the FO pulled the trigger. Kap was brought in to eventually take over. I never thought, and still don’t, that Smith is a championship caliber QB. He’s rebuilt his confidence over the past eight years and he’s a serviceable QB, but I still wish we’d taken Rogers instead.

Sounds like an excellent plan...all the way up to dealing Mullens if he shows well again. I’d deal Beathard and keep Mullens if he has some magic. Given that the starter essentially injured himself out of a season all on his own the question of his durability needs to be considered. Better to have a guy with a smidge of magic as the backup than one with zero.

and surprise surprise, Tom Cable ain't the O-line guru people want to think about him.

and a +1 to questioning Mullins' future success. It'll be tough for the 9ers to find another defense so very willing to have receivers get wide, wide open after just 5 yards.

the team is playing without heart and without emotional investment. And that's all on Gruden.

The second TD pass wasn’t just about blown coverage. There were so many bodies in that picture Mullens did well threading it in. It’s one pass. It’s also the light switched on showing what he is capable of doing. Now, can he do that under more pressure and in the face of a tight scoring game? And can he do it after everybody knows his tendencies?

literally the very play before, Mullins threw it directly to a Raiders defender. Unfortunately the pass hit him in a bad spot...right the F in his hands! he drops it, next play TD, and Mullens looks like the 2nd coming of Jeff Garcia.

so like I said, I'm not really sure how this kid would look going against a defense who actually was trying to play defense.

guys it was a 3rd string UDFA against the worst team in the league.

...except...sometimes luck helps...member a few weeks back when Beathard hit Kittle right in the hands over the top and Kittle dropped what looked to be a sure TD if he'd caught it? And the very next play Beathard trows a pic?

The almost-could'a-should'a-would'as don't mean jack squat in the NFL. Points on the board is what counts.

Mullens showed some magic against the crappiest D I've seen all year. Can he do the same against a better D? Can he brew up some magic when the pressure's dialed up a notch or three? Can he do it after the league has enough data on him to make those windows of brewing tiny? (Speaking of brewing where the heck has Aaron been lately?) That's what separates starters from benchers.

That's exactly my point. He's played 1 game. Probably we can dial back on the trading him to NYG for Saquon talk

Like I said, don't over react, but if he keeps a hot hand, I wouldn't be surprised if a QB needy team was willing to deal as much as a 2nd round pick for him. I mean, Christ, the Cowgirls just paid a 1st round pick for Amari Cooper.

The Niners aren’t a playoff threat team yet, they are still building. If you aren’t in threat mode and you can get a 2nd or 3rd round pick for your backup guy? You take that money and run.

If you think you have a serious playoff run in you, then maybe you give up the draft opportunity to keep some Hostetler insurance around. Picks in those rounds can buy you guys that can contribute right away at less valued position like Guard, Running Back, and Linebacker. Get that shit while the price is still high on dude.

If someone offers a 2nd round pick for Mullens they take it and do the paperwork before anybody realizes what happens.
