Shanahan has reached the limit of what he can do with a QB of Jimmy Overthrow’s modest talents. Two championship games ain’t bad but not to Big Dance like 2019. I accepted this defeat fairly easily, never having expected to get this far, given the early season play. In fact, GaGottaGo’s first two big misses, an overthrow to Kittle and into coverage on the next one were typical of their 3 and 5 start play. One of the radio analysts made an obvious point a week or two ago: Garopono is a pocket passer and has to arc his throws, so his pathology will be to over, rather than under throw. This affects short passes the most because he is trying not to be batted down. This helped me to understand him better but he still failed in the end.
Papers are blaming Shanahan’s fourth quarter play-calling but really, the game is lost early on with lost opportunities from fresh play and novelty. This is why Niners never have high scores. It isn’t just that they grind out plays from running game, it’s that inconsistent QB play prevents higher scoring.
Niners fans have nothing to complain about, we remain pretty well fed by success. Deebo and our defense delivered and gave us something to feel great about.
I am skeptical that Lance will be able to do even as well at first, but it’s time to move on; his problems will be different ones. This game was a good example of what we fans have watched all year...a blistering defensive effort, and an uneven albeit sincere offensive effort. They needed luck, or Bill Walsh’s “Fortune” to make it, and they didn’t get it. I think the second-to- last drive (?), three and out, was typical and pathetic (prior to actual turnover) but the power of the belief and determination of Rams defense, the money they spent made it happen. I’m sure all three Rams fans really appreciated it and the bandwagon is open for business.
