Oroville dam spillway damaged

Yeah.. if you guys could just send all that overflow to Lake Cachuma here in Santa Barbara, that'd be great. We gotta play a little.. catch up.

What a cluster. Shooting millions of acre feet out to the ocean, and parts of the south are still short on water. WTF California?

This should all be captured and stored, but no, building a reservoir in the middle of desolate non-farmable, non productive land is environmentally and politically bad.

In all fairness - they do have the ability to bring water into Lake Cachuma via the State Water Project - but not on the scale that is being released by any means. It's a very small amount compared to what is needed.

They continue to bring water in via Coastal Extension and the Santa Ynez Branch of the state water project. It just isn't enough volume to handle Santa Barbara and the surrounding areas.

Luckily we have had some good rains, but with Cachuma around 14% last I checked - that lake has a long ways to go. Gibraltor is full and hitting it's spillway - so that is helping Cachuma which is downstream from it.

Makes you wish we had more water storage. It would be interesting if we could find a way to put some of that water back into the aquifer.

There are all sorts of unintended and unanticipated side affects of diverting water.

I think the San Jaoquin (sp?) Valley was a seasonal lake, with seasonal spectaculae wildlife.

Things change. Be careful what you wish for.

They'd just water their lawns with it.

One place to start would be to fill all the surface water projects/canals, some of them are not lined, and this would help the surrounding areas. At this point in time, I don't think they are doing this.

Now that we have full lakes in the north part of the state, how much do you local folks think that your water bill will go down? Bet it stays the same...

I guess that's a better problem than being in a drought

Despite the promising situation, water regulators extended conservation measures on Wednesday and will continue to do so until at least the spring as a precaution against a dry weather spell.

We're STILL in a drought. Hence the reason for the lakes overflowing. We need to worry about a dry weather spill, not a damn failing. I repeat; WE ARE IN A DROUGHT.

NOT 3rd world.

I started a thread about crumbling infrastructure in the Political subforum with this story.

3rd World.

As much as everyone might want to blame some entity, Dems, whatever, I have to think that shrinking clay from drought is going to be years worth of damage all over the state. Just watching my immediate environment, areas I know, has been interesting. Everything changed and shrunk as the drought got worse and worse.

Well sure as shit if YOU did this with any amount of water, you'd be in EPA, USACOE and CA Gov hell. And be on the bottom bunk when it was all said and done.

They need some of those blue tarps from Ace hardware, those things work great

Hahaha!

Evacuation orders issued for low levels of Oroville

This is an evacuation order.
Immediate evacuation from the low levels of Oroville and areas downstream is ordered.

A hazardous situation is developing with the Oroville Dam auxiliary spillway. Operation of the auxiliary spillway has lead to severe erosion that could lead to a failure of the structure. Failure of the auxiliary spillway structure will result in an uncontrolled release of flood waters from Lake Oroville.
In response to this developing situation, DWR is increasing water releases to 100,000 cubic feet per second.
Immediate evacuation from the low levels of Oroville and areas downstream is ordered.
This in NOT A Drill. This in NOT A Drill. This in NOT A Drill.

Whoa, I just read that. I didn't realize you'd posted that in this thread.
