Oroville dam spillway damaged

Slightly disruptive to say the least for those being evacuated.
They were pouring concrete couple of days ago just below the emergency spillway in an effort to reduce erosion. Guess it was too little too late, collapse sounds like a sure thing.
Will make for startling video of it wasn't getting dark outside.

So are we just talking uncontrolled spill-over or a sudden emptying of the entire contents of the reservoir?

They expect the emergency spillway to fail, so just uncontrolled spill.

And a little hole would probably become a big hole quickly...

Uncontrolled spillover of the lip of the emergency spillway, which would still be a lot of water. At some point after that uncontrolled release the water would drop low enough to control the releases.

Sudden emptying of entire contents not possible without massive explosion.
Problem is the water coming over the parking lot area to the west which was never designed for such event.

My wedding is in Walnut Grove in two weeks. We have at least another week of storms, and there's already a failed levee a few miles from the venue. Looking into event insurance now.

I think they're concerned that the flow over the top of the emergency spillway could cause enough erosion behind it to jeopardize the structural integrity.
Wouldn't drain the whole thing but the top two or three feet could go.

where do i find the real news? This alt BARF news is fun, but is it realiable? I know! SBR! Then back here, cause you guys rock.

This is pretty wild. Damn failures are colossal.

I checked it out after seeing it here. Doesn't smell like fake news to me after verifying it. Thanks BARF. :thumbup

Fox 40 is currently live but we're the Sac feed (Fairfield).

Unlikely this will be a dam failure for the main Oroville Dam. That would be catastrophic for all the entire Central Valley and devastating to California's economy in many ways.

Press conference of state officials moments ago stated that increased flow from the main spillway has taken some pressure off the emergency spillway. Flow over the emergency spillway had been about a 1.5 feet but is now just a few inches. Still, the top of the emergency spillway is 1700 feet long so we talking about a lot of water.

KCRA-TV weather team members estimate the lake level may drop below the top of the emergency spillway in two hours (give or take). Next step is to get lake level about ten feet lower which would take pressure off the emergency spillway on the lake side and allow for inspections and any attempts at emergency repairs. Remember, this is the small (relative) emergency spillway NOT the main dam.

KCRA-TV channel 3 in Sacramento has been a good source. The Sacramento Bee is regularly updating HERE
