Pismo fans should be skerd

I think the simple answer is no, we can't police ourselves. If we could, there'd be no use for law enforcement services.

Why does our community behave badly? Cannot we police ourselves? Peer pressure?

Therein lies part of the solution, me thinks.

Butch -

I disagree and used to have thoughts like this. No matter how some in our community act, we will be in constant danger of losing our privilege to ride offroad period. This has FAR less to do with the acts of a few than it does with a group of folks that hate offroading of any kind, anywhere, and the general apathy of public majority in general who dont know or care.

Many if not most of the general public simply don't know or care about the VERY FEW areas we have to ride offroad. This allows the very few who HATE offroad of any kind to constantly attack us. There is no compromise for those who dont like offroading until ALL areas are closed under any pretense. Unfortunately they have more money, large organizations, and the ears of those who matter.

We are a tiny minority as offroad riders, and unless we become very loud, all is lost.

Edit: This is not a statement condoning those who act poorly, I disapprove.

Quoted it because it says it all.
We need allies, we need a voice, we need to do more than just complain and not belittle those that actually get out there and do attempt action.

Wow, I didn't realize they are actually proposing shutting it down! (I guess i'm not a good reader)
The Change.org petition helped make things very clear to me (of course I signed it)
They also put out some very good contact info and made clear that

A VERY SHORT TIMELINE TO GET YOUR VOICES HEARD, July 4th:

Before July 5th email your comments to the commission at oceanodunesreview@coastal.ca.gov to tell them they need to protect your rights for camping and OHV use via the Coastal Act.

If you want to help fund Friends of Oceano Dunes, the non-profit group fighting against the closures (currently funding several lawsuits) you can donate directly to them VIA PayPal https://www.oceanodunes.org

Taking action now by writing, calling, and emailing the contacts below is also of immense help! Let them know how important Oceano Dunes SVRA is to you!

dan.canfield@parks.ca.gov

secretary@resources.ca.gov

OHVInfo_OHV@parks.ca.gov

Jim@oceanodunes.org

(and thanks Bud for updated the original post with a link to the petition. Key info imo)

Signed and BUMP.

Glad I took the family out this year, I told them this could be the last time.

Cunningham Opposes Further Limiting OHV Access at Oceano Dunes

SACRAMENTO – Today, Assemblyman Jordan Cunningham (R-San Luis Obispo) sent a letter to the California Coastal Commission in opposition to the Commission’s plan to further limit off-road vehicle access to the Oceano Dunes State Vehicular Recreation Area.

In the letter, Cunningham states: “The Oceano Dunes State Vehicular Recreation Area itself generates more than $150 million in annual economic activity from outside visitors. It is a major contributor to South San Luis Obispo County’s tourism industry. Hundreds of businesses rely upon these visitors to generate revenue and employ local residents.

“In addition to the economic benefits, the Dunes provide unique access to recreation for off-road vehicles. We have made progress in mitigating the environmental impacts of OHV’s, as well as improving public safety at the Dunes. I believe that we will make further progress in those areas.”

The California Coastal Commission will hear staff’s recommendation to further limit access to the Dunes on Thursday, July 11 at the Embassy Suites Hotel in San Luis Obispo. The public can submit written comment on the item by emailing CentralCoast@coastal.ca.gov by Friday, July 5 at 5:00pm.

Assemblyman Jordan Cunningham is a small business owner; former school board member and prosecutor, husband and father of four. He proudly represents all of San Luis Obispo County and a portion of Santa Barbara County, including Arroyo Grande, Atascadero, Cambria, Paso Robles, Grover Beach, Guadalupe, Lompoc, Los Osos, Morro Bay, Nipomo, Orcutt, Pismo Beach, Templeton, San Luis Obispo, and Santa Maria, and surrounding communities.

Assemblyman Jordan Cunningham makes too much sense.

How the hell did he get elected? :p

Thank you sir. :thumbup

I goth this today from Freinds of Oceano Dunes:

The Coastal Commission is about to ruin your Holidays at the Oceano Dunes. Summer vacations will be taking a big hit too!

If you have camping reservations for Thanksgiving and/or New Year’s or ANY time after July 11th 2019 at the ODSVRA I suggest you make a back-up plan. 300 camping reservations will be taken away starting July 11, 2019.

That’s right 300 campers will have to stay home. Who’s going to give up their reservation?

Of course all of this is subject to being able to cross the creek. Once the creek is flowing to the ocean, camping will be halted. At least the 700 who make it across the creek will get a quiet night’s sleep since night riding will be prohibited.

The Coastal Commission wants to:
“Users are not allowed to the southern side of the creek area when the creek may soon connect to the ocean”
“700 camping units per night as of July 11, 2019”
“All vehicular and OHV activity within ODSVRA shall be prohibited during nighttime hours (i.e., from one-hour after sunset and to one-hour before sunrise)”

The time is now to get involved!

1) Attend the Coastal Commission and speak up. ---This one is important
Date: Thursday, July 11th
Time: 9 am (show up early)
Location: Embassy Suites Hotel
333 Madonna Road, San Luis Obispo, CA 93405

2) Email your comments to the Commission at OceanoDunesReview@coastal.ca.gov because you know they’d LOVE to hear from you. In addition to your thoughts tell them they need to protect your rights for camping AND OHV use via the Coastal Act. Even though it’s past the deadline to submit letters, you can still send your letters and ask that they be placed into the record.

Letters should be in your own words; it doesn’t need to be long but just say what the ODSVRA means to you and yours.

Please, no form letters, they don’t help.

3) Give ‘em a ring at (831) 427-4863

4) Even send a fax (831) 427-4877

FTFY

It will all be gone in 3-5 years as the eco-terrorists have been relentless in their bullshit made up claims against humans actually using the beach..
Its sad as this is the only beach in the US where you can do this left.
Fuck you Sharia Club.

I just sent this

It is environmentally irresponsible to close this area to OHV recreation.
As our population grows and our resources are stressed, we must manage their use, not ban them. Depriving people of their freedom pushes them to react in more destructive ways. Enforcement of poorly conceived closures stress other resources.

Saving a few square miles of coastline for OHV activity relieves stress on other resources.

Keep Pismo open.

Yeah, it's not exactly what I want.
What I really want is to inspire you guys to send something similar.
What I really want is to inspire everyone to inspire their friends to do the same and make it sonowball.

I am going to make this better and send it to the governor when it gets closer. Friends of Oceano Dunes and CORVA will know when that is.

another view of some folks attempt to environmental management:

Oceano “Dust” is Fragrant Elixir

As somebody who grew up on the North Coast of California, I remember visiting many non-motorized state and county parks to enjoy walking on the beach and having a picnic with family and friends. Enjoying the fresh ocean breeze and dealing with blowing sand aka “dust” into the food was just part of the experience and something that I treasure.

...8.5M Dollar Beach Front Home for Sale Malibu, CA
a pic sould be here, eh?

Up and down the CA coast, movie stars and business tycoons often spend a lot of money purchasing homes that are near or on the beach where they too can enjoy those same coastal dust experiences.

As many of us in the OHV community prepare to attend the July 11 California Coastal Commission (CCC) hearing in San Luis Obispo, I ask why the CCC staff’s “dust control” mitigation proposals are largely focused on installation of barriers, planting of vegetation to cover dunes, and severe restriction and eventual elimination of OHV recreation at the Oceano Dunes State Vehicular Recreation Area (SVRA)?

...Burn Piles from ODNRA Restoration Project
a pic sould be here, eh?

As we have seen at the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area (ODNRA), all of those aforementioned treatments have resulted in conversion of a prehistoric 40,000 acre open dune structure to an artificially manipulated area that is 90% overgrown with a dense vegetative dune mat that extends to the waveslope.

https://www.facebook.com/294886641722/photos/a.381615961722/10156197122946723/?type=3&theater

While the Forest Service and the ODNRA collaborative try and restore the open dune structure via vegetation removal projects including use of prescribed fire to reduce vegetation behind the foredunes and bulldozing of high foredunes to encourage Western snowy plover habitat, it appears the CCC is poised to make the same dune mismanagement decisions their Oregon counterparts made in the 1970s.

Let’s hope cool heads prevail so that high quality OHV recreation remains an important use at Oceano Dunes SVRA and that it is not replaced with multimillion dollar homes where owners pay good money to inhale the same ocean dust that is regarded by many as a fragrant elixir more valuable than gold.

I hear you loud and clear, Butch.
I'm on it! (again)

Postponed until Summer 2020.

Better than closed.
