Plus Size Models

Wow? That's significantly overweight (closer to BMI obese than normal)

Then again, the average man is 5-9 195 :wtf

Wait, does this surprise you?

Obesity in the United States has been increasingly cited as a major health issue in recent decades, resulting in diseases such as coronary heart disease that lead to mortality. While many industrialized countries have experienced similar increases, obesity rates in the United States are the highest in the world.

Based on experience it's not that most people are at the average weight but rather you have non-fat people being balanced out by the 300+ lbers in the southern states.

Attractiveness is a matter of personal preference.

Granted, that can be influenced by upbringing and environment as kids grow up, but it still comes down to personal preference regardless of the root for that preference.

If skinny floats your boat. Great.
If plus sizes float your boat. Great.
If woman in between float your boat. Great.

The only place that fails is when somebody tries to define for somebody else what body type they should be attracted to or not.

I agree. My girlfriends have not been twigs, but I am not attracted to morbidly obese people because there's no way you're that fat and healthy...., some genetically lucky people are but most of them have health issues.

Plus sides models should be called models while regular models that bear zero resemblance to the average American woman should be called Unrealistic Body models.

The average height and weight of women varies around the world, but in the United States in 2010, the average adult female height was 63.8 inches (approximately 5 feet 4 inches) and 166.2 pounds, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

:facepalm

That avg person is likely overweight, leads a sedentary lifestyle, couldn’t run a 5K if their life depended on it, and will prob encounter health problems because of it all later on in life. So no, we should not glorify the avg in any way. Doing something like this is pretty much “playing to the lowest common denominator”. Might as well give all those avg ppl a participation trophy for being avg.

As someone already said, even plus models don’t represent the avg anyway. 5’10” at 180# is well outside the norm. So if u want to equally shame everyone because of their physical attributes, they all can be “unrealistic body” models.

Yeah not what I was saying. But honestly, I can't do shit about it. The advertising industry, movies, TV etc only feature mostly attractive people. It's not about glorification it's about selling as much expensive shit that people will buy.

IMO...

That’s exactly what’s going on now with this “movement” and it’s off-base. The voices that speak up are trying to convince everyone that every woman is attractive. Bullshit. No one should be attempting to change my preferences. It’s not gonna work anyway. So we went from one bad side, fat shaming, to the other side, shaming ppl that don’t agree with the above.

The real problem, what this “movement” should be solving, is that we should not be treating ppl differently because of their physical attributes. But I think that msg is lost at the moment.

And you ironically face palmed me.

That might not be what u intended, but I think it’s a consequence of what u proposed. Tell all the models that work rly hard to be attractive that they are unrealistic, which is a bad thing by connotation, and this implies that avg is better.

I don’t think the meaning of the word “model” will ever switch. Attractive movie stars will prob always sell more clothes than more avg looking models. And there’s no way we could attach negative connotations to movie stars. They are mostly too good at their job of being likeable.

Read the next sentence. Don’t cherry pick.

Someone is trying to convince me to like every woman, every body type, every combination of physical attributes.

Models who work really hard? Like learn to put on makeup real good and starve themselves?

Why do you randomly leave out letters from your typing?

I agree with much of what you're saying.

There is nothing wrong with people's perceptions of beauty, it's what they see and feel.

OTOH, there are certainly levels of obesity which are unhealthy for both men and women and the heavier they get the more unhealthy it becomes for them. From that standpoint, they should be encouraged to take steps to lose weight (through diet and exercise) to become healthier. However, fat shaming is often going to accomplish the exact opposite.

Some people are just naturally skinny, they are not sick, and they did not starve themselves to get that way. :rolleyes So if their bodies are "unrealistic" (a passive-aggressive insult), then so are the bodies of obese women, since both groups fall outside the average.

Women with some size can be sexy, attractive, alluring and fun, or unappealing. It has to do with how they carry themselves, their attitude, and their behavior. Just like women with no plush in their booty who wear Size 2.

Based on male models in magazines anyone without a six pack is plus sized. Men are getting more anorexia because of the sudden emphasis on the male form in the past decade.

I really do wonder what would be better for society as a whole... encouraging ppl to be more healthy or just shutting up and minding our own business. the first might positively affect the avg, might not. it all depends on the implementation of "encouragement". the second is prob a lot less likely to affect the avg, good or bad.

social situations like this, where society is actively trying to take a better stance on some issue, reminds me of the SouthPark episode about the town flag debate. the flag depicted a bunch of white stick figures hanging a black stick figure. there was a school debate over keeping or changing the flag. the main boys were pro-flag because they didnt see a problem w/ violence. a lot of the other characters were anti-flag because it was racist. the moral was that the boys were so NOT-racist that they didnt even see the problem w/ the flag. the skin color of the figures wasn't recognized. the flag was changed to figures of every color hanging another :laughing

IMO, this whole "movement" (gotta think up a better word) is in the same stage as most of the South Park town. we recognize that fat shaming is a problem, but a lot of the attempts to not do it are just shaming other ppl. and the issue won't really be solved until society as a whole is like the boys, where a physical attribute isn't even recognized.

In real-life thick women with a .7 waist to hip ratio are hot.

But for modeling, clothes just don't hang as appealing on fat women and men.

Its not fair, but their you go.
